It's easier to say "which aren't army"
Cutter is the only Coast Guard. Navy is: Shipwreck, Torpedo, Keel Haul, Topside, Wet-Suit, Wetdown, Tracker, Depthcharge, Deep-Six Air Force: Ace, Payload, Maverick, Slipstream, Ghost Rider, Dogfight, any pilots (the helicopter guys are Army) Marines are Gung-Ho, Leatherneck, Slaughter I'm missing alot. You'd probably like the "What Secrets Lurk in the Filecard" thread, we've pretty much gone thru and narrowed down who goes where and what branch. I just can't remember off the top of my head.

I think at this point I'm pretty straight on whose who and who goes where except this...which is gonna make alot of people click off of this thread, here goes.
Ninja Force. Ok, so these guys we're basically hand picked by Storm Shadow because they are the best of the best and worthy of fighting under him for the Joe team? Right? Next, it says these guys are also "Infantry"..so, does that mean they went through basic in any of the Military branches, then resumed training at Arashikage Temple and became Joes? I just always thought ALL Joe team members served in a legitimate branch of Military and excelled to the point where they were selected to be G.I. Joe. Ninja Force gives me the idea that none of these guys ever served. They were martial artists from the get go, worked the ranks of Arashikage Temple, Storm Shadow put the team together and said "hey these guys are the best, swear them in as Joes and I'll do the rest". Also wasnt Gen Flagg or Hawk (?) very reluctant of the NF team in the begining because they had no prior military training?? I may be wrong there. In my world, these guys were the exception. Never soldiers, if they had any sort of basic/military training it was briefly through the G.I. Joe team, they have no previous military training or affiliation. |

About the time of Ninja Force the cards got away from giving military service.
Take Recoil for example. His filecard says nothing of what branch he was in, it says something about competitive body building and then joining the Joes. But he's listed as an LRRP (Long Range Recon Patrol), which WAS an army position (if I remember accurately, LRRP is no longer a true MOS), and it can also be guessed that Recoil was one of the Joe's that served in 'Nam as that's where and when LRRP was used.

Ninja Force is iffy. They wouldn't have had to serve, as they're there for their abilities.
It depends on how you want to use Ninja Force. Use 'em as Storm Shadow's team, where it's his agents and he's the only one that "works" for Joe, then they really didn't have to serve. But if they're officially part of Joe, then they had to serve.

Nope, during the Marvel one they seemed on board with it.
It was the first DDP issue, when still published by Image, when Hawk expressed displeasure with the whole ninja thing when he was first introduced to Kamakura who he called "green power ranger".

With the early filecards, the two letters in the serial number gave away their branch: RA = Regular Army, RN = Navy, MC = Marine Corp, and AF = Air Force (CG = Coast Guard). This is not too consistent, as Leatherneck is listed as a RA (army), but he is a Marine (it should be: MC 368-10-0025), and Skip A. Stone (Cutter) is also listed as a RA, but he is with the Coast Guard (it should be: CG 403-54-0688).
AR was the most commonly seen. Only Ace had AF, Gung-Ho had MC, and Torpedo had RN – all of whom are from 1983. Afterwords, AR was used regardless of branch, with no other letters used, or not used at all. I kinda like this system (when used consistently), as it tells you which service branch everyone is with. |
