I think ninjas are way over-rated and over-hyped. They sure have a great publicist. Hollywood and videogames love them. I once read an article about the skills ninjas needed. It was a long list. Fightings skills were only a tiny portion their resume. Think of a modern day spy. A spy rarely kills anyone. They may have to, but that's a small portion of their job. Same with a ninja.
I wonder what a historical ninja would think of their modern day legacy? Movies, video games, ninjitsu school? It's doubtful they would think their day job is a martial art. They were hired mercenary, spy, and killer. Living hand to mouth and not living very long. Gee I'm going open a ninjitsu school. Make lots of money. As a genre, there has never been a serious ninja movie. They're all cartoon charaters. And can't be taken seriously. The Last Samurai (Tom Cruise) is a pop corn movie pretending to be a serious oscar worthy drama. When you throw in ninjas, it goes downhill very fast. If you want fanboys, throw in a ninja! |

4. Tae Kwon Do: also unarmed combat ( I think this originates in Korea).

6. Bali Song: Mentioned on Torpedo's File Card. I have no idea what this is...

12. ???????: I forgot the name of it, but its a Philipino martial art that was used in the Borne Identity movie serries. It has been refferenced on the History Channel, Yes it is real!

...Since Larry Hama wrote the file cards, and he did do lots of research, I assume these names refer to actual fighting styles...

Southern Praying Mantis- Praying Mantis is a form or "shape" in Kung Fu...you can actually put your hands in the way of a Praying Mantis to begin to simulate it...of course its MUCH MUCH deeper then that. "Southern" is probably what area it came from...I have never heard it distiniguished geographically.

Tai Chi- Is very crazy, believe it or not after MMA, Muay Thai and Escrima class..."Combat" Tai-Chi kicked my ass the most. It is used for breathing, concentration, over all health and yes can be applied to "combat" techniques which would include a sword. QK is no joke.
Another type of Kung Fu. Bruce Lee studied it under the famous Yip Man and used it as the basis of his Jeet kune Do. |

This is just the conspiracy theorist in me, but I believe our army has ninjas.
I do physicals on all types of Soldiers. I see the SF guys, Rangers, Delta Force, SOAR, all the way down to recruits for Aviation. But every once in awhile, maybe 2 times a year there are guys that are brought through by an SF E8 or O4 and have their unlabled medical records hand carried. They all get called Mr. Smith, they all look like they toured with white Snake or pantera. There is no way for me to even get credit for me seeing them on my books, not even under Mr Smith. These are the guys that scare the bejeezus out of me. So I always joke with guys thinking about re-enlisting, that they shouldn't do it unless they get to be a ninja. One guy got back to me and said his retention NCO tried to get him to go SF after he told him that. lol. But what makes a ninja... not being known has to be a part of it. Ninja Master to me would just be someone that could train a ninja. For the record, T'jbang and Nunchuck are the most hardcore Ninja's on the joe team ever. :P |

I don't think any of the GI Joes are actually listed as being trained in eskrima/kali/arnis, although I think it's safe to say that Torpedo is trained in some aspects of it (since his filecard says he's an expert in the use of the balisong--a weapon used in many eskrima/kali styles). I also wouldn't be surprised if Snake-Eyes was trained in eskrima/kali. The sword that came with Snake-Eyes v2 (seen here) looks exactly like a pinuté to me, one of the many weapons used in eskrima/kali. Last edited by zuludelta; 02-20-2010 at 04:53 AM.. |
