I think mine goes all the way back to when the toyline first started. I don't remember my initial toys, but I probably got into G.I. Joe from having friends with them, so I started getting my own. I even remember when the 1983 "MASS Device" mini-series premiered. My dad and I watched it all week long and he recorded it to VHS for me. (Which I still have! Even with the DVDs now, I've refused to throw out that tape because it's just too big a source of nostalgia. )
Here's a picture from 1982, and I'm pretty sure that's a Joe tank beside me on the left: This one is from 1983, with a really cool Joe gift that I got from my mom's best friend: I remember the size of that gift driving me crazy for weeks before Christmas, and my parents made me wait to open it last that morning. Good times. Last edited by Michael24; 02-17-2010 at 12:27 AM.. |

Ah man, I think it was like 84 for me? My bday I got the Bridgelayer and a Tele-Viper...I was in freakin' heaven!
I had been so into MOTU that I was almost blind to anything else. My friends up the street started on Joes and I went apeshit..I begged for them and finally opened those up on my bday..the rest is history!

I was born in 76, and I'm not sure when that was put out...I just remember his "fro" and sideburns, sitting on the floor looking at one of the back panels. Ahhh...Memories...

I remember seeing the commercial for the first issue of the comic back in 82. I flipped out and had to have it. I got my mom to take me to the newstand to pick it up. I read that thing over and over. My dad eventually read it, since he was ex-Navy and into military stuff. One day I came home from school to find he had gone to Toys R Us and picked up the complete line of the original carded figures. After that I was hooked and thus began the campaign for the vehicles so my unit could be mobile.
Sorry, that just screamed a "witty" Beavis and Butthead joke ;)

1982: I get the Sears Missile Command for Christmas.
I become enchanted with the look of the COBRA forces, and get a couple more COBRA Officers and Soldiers. Straight-arm. My friends are into GIJOE but I decide to just get COBRAs. 1983: Enter Destro and I am helplessly hopelessly in love forever. It's like going from smoking to the needle.

Not my first Joes, but I remember when I would stay with my dad on weekends he would usually get me something GIJoe. Sometimes it was just a figure in the car when he picked me up, sometimes he would get me a vehicle and several figures and then set them up on a bookshelf, all put together. One time he did that and I didn't notice until several hours after we got home. All the sudden I look up on top of the bookshelf and there is a HISS, Firefly and a couple other figures!
