Just curious. I've been a member for over a year, but don't really post a lot. Just trying to find out a little more about people. What makes G.I. Joe special to you? What makes it different than other cartoons from the same era? Or better? This question may have already been asked, so forgive me if it has.
With me, it was my favorite cartoon as a kid. I guess I thought as a kid that they did a good job of making each character unique. Now as an adult, it's all nostalgia. I didn't become a collector until they released the 25th line. I never collected any toys until then. I'm hooked and now I have a G.I. Joe room in my house. My wife just shakes her head, but also supports my habit. She buys me Joes all the time when she's out. Last edited by Scrap Iron; 02-07-2010 at 08:18 PM.. |

I don't know what it was back in 84 when I first realized that g i joe existed, but it was instant. I just loved the different characters and vehicles and there was something about the 3 3/4" scale that seemed so perfect. I liked other toys too but they never stuck with me very long. Part of it was the constant release of new product as well.
Aside from some reissue transformers I only collect joes. 25th and all O-ring styles.

For me I transitioned from Star Wars to GIJoe. The Last year of Star Wars was GIJoe at it's height. Plus the Cartoon, and the comics, and the constant commercials, and the fact that military toys are cool, it wasn't hard. But key to it all were the characters. I love the comics, and the cartoons did a good job of developing the same core characters as well. But to me they both tie in with one of the most important features of Joe characters and that was the filecards. Without those you just have CORPS figures

Reliving my childhood I guess. Its lame, but I was the kid that always wanted an even amount of good guys and bad guys and never got to complete sets of anything, always missed the stuff I liked by a hair. I also grew up in the DiC days (born in 86), so I didn't get alot of original guys, just repaints.
I just started with Transformers, started collecting GI Joes. Joes were smaller, easier to store and had a bit more of a connection to me (I collected Beast Wars as a kid, but before that I was playing with DiC era Joes the most), so I kept them going. Have a pretty decent loose collection of 25th (not a MOC collector really, until I start with vintage), some newer Universe Transformers and the random Masterpiece, and I've started picking up Marvel Universe here and there. But GI Joe is still the focal point. Last edited by HunterSkunter; 02-07-2010 at 08:44 PM.. |

It was a huge chunk of my life from late 82-1990. I've had the Toy habbit off and on all my life.
I never got a full set of the original 13 as a kid. Feels great now to have my customized version of them and all the vehicles. I just loved GI Joe universe it was so creative and allowed my imagination to run wild, and it still does.

because, as a kid, my entertainment was provided by myself meaning it was what i made of it. there were no video games, there were no computers. atleast not until the late 80's for us. gi joe provided me endless afternoons of fun and imaginative play. i dabbled in transformers, mask, he man and the other 80's classics but gi joe always was the favorite.
today, kids have to be spoon fed entertainment. be it computer games, video games, cartoons they just don't have the same free play creativeness that we had as kids. i've been fortunate in that i've been able to get my kids into gi joe thus enjoy sharing the same level of creativity and imagination in playing with action figures. so for me it's been both the joy of collecting a bit of my childhood memories with the 25th/me line and a connection with my kids which is awsome. while we all enjoyed the movie and to some small extent the movie line toys, it just doesnt' compare to the excitement of a 25th/me battle or classic cartoon episodes.

Because everything else IS JUST A TOY!
Whoops, wrong franchise... Or not. Having lived through the fads and toylines of the 90s, from Power Rangers in '94 to Pokemon in '99, I've always loved toys. Even now, when I'm a fairly religious gamer, the latest plastic toy takes priority over the latest game, mostly for cost reasons. Anyway, I didn't get into Joe until 02, when Gundam was dying down faster than a small fire in a rain storm. I picked up the Wet Suit vs. COBRA Moray at KB Toys when they had some clearance or whatever, partially because I love divers and have always had a soft spot for anything resembling powered armor. Immediately I was immersed in the characterization and scope of the universe, and craved more. Then SpyTroops hit and I met the likes of Kamakura, Depth Charge, Barrel Roll, and many others. While most people were complaining, my mind overrunneth with ideas, stories, plots, and missions, and the personalities of these characters breathed life when previously it was just "Soldier X must attack Base Y to destroy Commander Z" when I was playing with my other stuff. To say I was heartbroken when VvV came to an end and I couldn't afford the DTC line would be an understatement; I respected he S6 line, but it just didn't hook me in like the previous lines. So uh... I guess characters and all that s***.

it all started for me in 1982- I was 7. I dont know for sure but i must have watched a commercial or TRU catalog. I remember getting grunt and flash and intergrating them into the toys I already had...CHips...Dukes of Hazzard...MASH...Star Wars..from then on I was hooked. I did not grow up with much money (single mom) but she would buy me a new joes every few weeks. When the cartoon came out (not sure of the year) it was like crack to me. I just could not get enough of it. As i got older i stopped buying Joes but still loved them....I few years back I decided to start collecting again, Joes and drumming are the 2 hobbies in life that i never got sick of

My first Joe was Wild Bill with Dragonfly copter. I fell in love with the file card that instantly brought me onto a whole new world. The figure was detailed and pose-able, unlike Star wars. The copter had a cool action feature and one of the best things about all joe vehicles was that we got to build them and apply the decals. Every time I got a new vehicle my joes had the opportunity to build a new prototype and test it. It was a well thought out well executed toy line. As much as I love the 25th, the fact that everything was pre-assembled took away from the experience. Fortunately, I'm a MIB collector now.
