I have a question about the order of command for ranking Joe officers.
I'm not entirely sure of how the chain of command works. I get that general is at top. My confusion comes in when Duke is usually treated as above Falcon, but Duke is a Sgt. and Falcon is a Lt. Isn't Lt. abouve Sgt? or is Top Sgt. higher? Can someone please list the order of ranks? I imagine I could do some online research and find this but since I'm here and a lot of you have military backgrounds I thought I'd just strike up conversation instead. thanks |

Put it this way, the various Joe media don't follow true ranking conventions at all.
Here's the real ranking structure of the military: United States Military Ranks - for Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines

Thanks for the info. I have always tried to mold "my" verse despite the various media as well but never truly understood real world rank.

Before I was born, my dad served in the National Guard and was Captain when he left. I never knew he was up that high.
I could have asked my dad for this info but he never really talks about those days much. I wonder where he would have climbed to had he not left. |

well according to Flint in Arise, Serpentor, Arise it is
1.Hawk 2.Duke 3.Flint 4.Beachhead and as far as I know...didn't General Flagg die in the comic run? and he was only mentioned in a couple of the sunbow toons and he didn't seem to really run the joe team. I don't know...all I know is that Hawk and Duke are high up the ladder. all the other big namers are next in line or good enough to lead their own unit or "ninja force" or "star brigade" or whatever. but as the above folk have mentioned...they are not accurate or consistent at all with ranks....Cover Girl in ROC is referred to as a Corporal but her file card says her rank is different. Helix's rank is listed as Corporal but given her comic background that wouldn't make much sense. |

Duke technicaly ranks lower than Lt. Falcon.
However Falcon was a "New Recruit" to the JOE team in the 1987 film. ...Duke also has overwelming seniority on both the JOE team and time served. Also Duke is a Medal of Honor winner which entitles him to a salute by any and ALL commissioned officers. My father was a medic in Vietnam from 1967-1968 and ranked as a medic E-4. Based on his experience anyone who has been in the army long enough to make it to E-8 or E-9 is not to be F**ed with. First Shirts are almost always career men with 20-30 years of service. And no wet behind the ears Lt. in their right mind messes with them. In a infantry unit the first shirt is on the staff of the CO for the whole unit. He runs things and has the Lt. Col. ear and blessing to do so. Last edited by IronMan76; 02-05-2010 at 11:37 PM.. |

This is true in certain situations like SOG in the vietnam war. The more experienced recon member was the leader of the team, not the highest ranking NCO or officer. But when there not on a mission, Duke would have to take orders from Falcon.
