I think that new vehicle is for underwater use only. I don't think that it can leave the water and fly in the air like the Sharc does.

That guy has been doing a lot of crazy stuff lately. He also has a plane that will take you to outer space and circle the globe. Hats off to him for having the $$$$$ to do it all.

Sadly, Richard Branson's newest toy doesn't fly. They call it an underwater plane because it uses "wings" to simulate negative buoyancy.
The US Department of Defense is developing a submersible aircraft though, if you believe this federal government presolicitation notice I dug up. |

That's thing's open to the water, better to go for one of the closed versions, e.g.: Deep Flight - H.O.T. [Submersibles > Deep Flight Aviator]
"Interesting" blurb about it having the ability to go down to 37k' and being built for Steve Fossett to have a go; you'd have thought someone else would have tried it, or we would at least have heard about it if it were actually anything more than a publicity stunt.... Still, it does look cool |
