Why is it that some collectors pay more for mint/loose/complete 25th/modern figs than the same figure carded or boxed? For example a best of 80's DVD pack sometimes gets passed over with a bin of say $40. Then you see people bidding OVER $40 for alpine alone. This has never made any sense to me. Can anyone make sense out of this?

No. That's why I mostly trade for what I can't find at retail. It's worth as much as someone is willing to pay for it.

A fool and his money are soon parted.

When the buyer did a search on ebay, they searched for Alpine as opposed to Best of 80's and therefore the cheaper Best of 80's were not available for them to purchase.
Or perhaps their decision was based on a relationship they've built up with a particular seller, or maybe they took shipping into account? |

To me what's far worse are those Asian sellers who have items priced at like, $84.99 and then ask for $40 shipping--that TAKES 20 business days???
I know it's expensive to ship things from Asian countries to the U.S., but damn, I pay $40 shipping from Hong Kong that damn thing better be here in a week--TOPS!

Maybe they only want Alpine and don't want to deal with the hassle of having extra figures to either sell on their own or store away.

Had 4 Alpines, traded them for stuff. Sold 1 for $5 bucks. Honestly, there are still 4 or 5 80's packs sitting at the Marshalls I go to. The only 25th figures that are worth more than the $5 you would have paid at Wally World are the SDCC stuff and the variants.
Even that's changing though. Clear Wraith, I paid $39 for in December, now Ebay is flooded with the ones showing up on clearence.

Probably people are willing to pay more for Alpine alone because they don't want the rest of the set for whatever reason, and don't want to have to deal with off-loading the rest, or storing what they don't want.
