So growing up with the Marvel series, I lived with the fact that Destro wore an ancestral mask that could be removed at any time. I accepted this. I never understood wearing masks, because any time I have, I felt claustrophobic, my vision was restricted, and my breath condensed on the inside and made everything hot. But a lot of villains (and superheroes) have worn masks, so whatever.
In the DD storyline, Destro's mask was based on technology that could conform to his face and reflect his expressions. I thought one of the cool ideas behind the mask was that your opponent would always see a blank poker face. They'd never be able to 'read' you. But I liked the idea that MARS could make something like this, and it explained why in the cartoon his lips moved. Still doesn't explain why he had eyebrows, but whatever. With the movie and the the new comic line, Destro is involved in two different accidents that force him to become enslaved to his metal visage. In the movie, he's burned badly and injected with metal nanomites to protect him and help him heal. This seems to be permanent. I liked this idea. And in IDW's G.I. Joe #6, he suffers an accident after using his newly developed MASS Device that forces him to be contained by a metal suit. Another plausible idea that seems pretty cool (and I like the idea of bringing back the MASS Device). So with all these explanations as to why Destro wears his mask, which do you favor?

Actually, I like the IDW storyline the best. The movie explanation works, and I can see now that anytime they need something to happen, those crazy little nanomites will be just the ticket. Kind of too easy.
The IDW set up and explanation read like a real story, and I think it's a killer take on a classic character. Having Destro developing the MASS for Cobra, and something going wrong trapping him inside the mask and suit puts some very interesting restraints on the character.

I think the IDW situation sounds cool, but i would prefer the RoC explanation. I like it because it still allows Destro the freedom of wardrobe changes, and freedom of movement. I wonder if the "nanomite" mask could mimic a human face in appearance...ie. shape and coloration. It would still be metal, but changes to the surface color, configuration, and finish/texture could approximate a human appearance i would think, since nanomites would build it up from such a very small scale with machine precision.

I just liked the fact he accepted his families tradition of wearing the mask. Making it a prideful tradition. I like the removeable mask with no expressions or eye brows. LOL.

I like the ancestor tradition deal, though even in the very Action Force comic I read about it in, there were several panels with him screaming or otherwise showing expression. I can see how they've tried to come up with ways for this to work.
I like the look of the original toy and card art for a non-movong face. They really havn't ever tried to replicate its look since IG Destro. |
