I like the ancestor deal, but I like how the movie dealt with it at first. Just having it be an heirloom that didn't get worn on a regular basis but still had meaning.
Wearing a heavy metal mask all the time just isn't practical. I like IDW giving him a reason that he HAS to wear it, forced to wear it. The ancestor thing just isn't practical on a regular basis. It's heavy, it's hot, it's restrictive.

Marvel's it just being a fearsome helmet works fine and gave Destro a freedom of movement and made him more dimensional as he can take off the mask and have a life outside of it. An alter ego or what have you. And that is what he had in Marvel. I liked the marvel comic issue when both Cobra Commander and Destro take off their makes and have moments of real humanity. The Dr. Doom/Man In the Iron mask is cliche and dumb. The liquid metal crap from DDP was just to retcon the cartoon and explain why he had eyebrows and mouth always moved-- they merged the silly Sunbow cartoon into the Marvel comics. Also even Cobra Commander in the Sunbow series was some hideous non-human monstrosity and in the ROC movie, was badly burned so both him and Destro suffer from the same bad storytelling devices and thus generic cardboard (B)movie villians

Not all villains have to be disfigured or devilishly handsome.
I prefer the normal ol' mask. Cartoon versions never colored my Joes much since they came so much later. The expressions in the comic I chalked up to the same ways that Iron Man's mask showed expression... it was just to help out the reader with a crummy, 2D drawing, like so many other "artistic license" alterations to reality we see. For me, it was just his helmet. It protected his face and his identity. Doesn't do much for the disco open shirt... but ARAH kind of silly like that, in general, anyway. |

I like the bumpy-headed Destro that ROC gave us. Yummy, seasoned with a touch of sarcasm.
