i thought i was his battle mask before the release of the newer battle gear version in 87. He seemed to use it when he was on missions and used the hood when he was sitting around arguing with his subordinates.

actually it's used for intimidation AND security. The facemask has been used for centuries for that purpose: The witch doctors mask, the metal face-shaped face plate used by the romans, the identical facemasks worn by ancient armies(Like the immortals from 300), all the way up to todays dark or mirrored glasses worn by lawmen. All this is referred to as the "Blank Stare" and creeps most people out. From a security point of view, it's impossible to tell who is under the mask or what he actually sounds like... all he has to do is take it off and nobody would know who he was and could easily escape any enemy.

you guys are reading too much into it. its just a mask. destro's mask is mirror like as well. we know its purpose but the material isnt really relevant. its like saying darth vaders helmet is nice and shiny so you can see yourself in a dark reflection. a mirrored mask looks cool.
I do think I read somewhere that Hama had stated it was like that on purpose, and also to make his legions of soldiers like him, Cobra as one hole being - Not sure where and I don't have the direct quote though so take it with a grain of salt. |

Can someone provide a more definitive answer? If there is one. Speculation is cool, but what about documented information? You know, from sources such Marvel comics, Larry Hama, IDW, file cards, etc. As far as I can tell, it's just a mask to disguise his identity. As for the ROC version, it appears to medically sustain him.

I posted this once before, but I always thought it the mirror was that when you looked upon Cobra Commander, you were seeing yourself. It sort of showed some of how he viewed the world: that we were what made him who he was. When you looked at him as evil, you saw yourself. Cobra was all of us.

I think the face plate was a design choice to make the toy similar looking to the other 2 existing Cobra troops, with the blue outfit and helmet, but since he was the leader and special, they covered his entire face to make him even more super-ultra secret and mysterious than the standard black handkerchief deal. |
