Hi everyone.
Sorry for having such a neophyte questions, but I’ve never been a special fan of GIJoe comics nor cartoons, so I feel a little lost when reading some of your comments throughout this forum. If you don’t mind, I will ask some of them in this thread, in which obviously everyone’s invited to show his own comments/doubts. Added to my lack of interest for the cartoon/comics when being a child, there's the gap of about 17 years without contact with GIJoe... (I'm in some kind of "vintage" stage of my life). Here are some of them: 1. What’s the first version of SE/SS history? For instance, was SS the one who killed Hard Master (such as ROC seems to insinuate), or was it Zartan, commanded by SS? Did SE make a promise to not talk ever as a result of his sensei’s death, or was it a result of the accident in which he rescued Scarlett, or was it a result of Zartan’s first shot on SE’s throat when killing Hard Master? 2. As far as I remember, Cutter was W.H.A.L.E.’s (B.A.L.L.E.N.A. hovercraft here in Spain) driver. But I don’t know if it’s actually the same as Shipwreck (named Eric in Spain). 3. Which was the first version of the story of CC? Who is Fred? 4. Why is Ripcord such a main character in ROC (I don’t remember him as being “so important” on the comics or cartoon)? 5. Which are the main points of the story of Beachhead (he was other of my favourite Joes when being a child)? 6. Which are the main “couple-fightings” in GIJoe universe? For instance, I didn’t remember Firefly as such an aggressive Cobra member. I only know about SE/SS… and no more, sorry. Well, I think it’s enough late-night show of my deep ignorance about the storyline of the characters (in my childhood, I only liked the toys). I'd like to know how many comics were released, and if I could purchase them (or if they're scanned on DVD, where to buy it). Thanks-a-lot in advance; be sure your reply will be really welcome PS: and sorry for my poor English |

1 - SE always suspected SS, but in reality SS was undercover in Cobra to find the real killer. CC had hired Firefly to kill SE, but Firefly subcontracted it to Zartan, who was the triggerman (arrow puller). In the comics SE lost his voice in the accident where he saved Scarlett. In Resolute it was when Zartan shot out his throat. In Rise of Cobra he took a vow of silence. First version would be the comic. They had no history in the Sunbow cartoon.
2- Cutter is the WHALEs driver. Different character from Shipwreck. 3- Comic came first. Sunbow cartoon came second, with a different orgin. Fred is a Crimson Guardsmen that took over CC's identity for a time. In the comic, all Crimson Guardsmen had surgery to look alike. 4- No idea. No one really knows the answer to that one. 5- He didn't really have a large presence in the Marvel comic, at least not one that gave a history to him. He was kind of a drill sargeant during Devil's Due's run of the comic. In the cartoon, he was one of the leaders (Hawk, Duke, Flint then him). But as for his history, don't think they really gave him one either. The new comic series, by IDW, will be dealign with Beachhead alot it looks like, he has an Origin issue coming up and has amenesia in the comic. 6- SE/SS was the main "couple" and really the only one that could be called nemesis and arch-nemesis. In the cartoon it was Spirit and Storm Shadow. Firefly and Storm Shadow at one point in the comic.

Thanks-a-lot, Troynos! You've reminded me of the story of SS undercovering Cobra. I also remember that, in the filecard of the "Joe" SS, it said that he could accept a work when living in his mountain house only if SS asked him in a proper way. Then, is it supposed that during his complete comic life, SS is supposed to be "good" but undercover, and that's why one of his main enemies is Firefly?
Thanks, thanks, THANKS. |

Firefly was originally a family friend from another ninja clan that betrayed them and then (later on when SS was a Joe and in charge of Ninja Force) tried to take over the Red Ninjas, the remnents of SS's old clan.

Thanks again, Troynos. A new world in front of my eyes...
So, Firefly's a ninja, too? I remember him as a soldier, but not in a ninja side... And, what's POC (I assume it's Pursuit of Cobra)? The figures belonging to ROC toyline which not were shown on the ROC film? Or is it an "official" line? Hah, being so "disconnected" for so many years has allowed me to love each one of the characters without being bored of them, and keeping not tired of overused figures (SE keeps being my favourite ). THX, THX, THANKKKKS! |

PoC is the next "theme" for the Joe line. The RoC universe still remains, but the figures flow into the Pursuit of Cobra line.
Currently the official start of PoC is 2nd half 2010, but there is some stuff coming in first half of 2010 that is still in Rise of Cobra packaging but has 4 different environment themes and colors. Late in Marvel's run of Joe they made Firefly into a ninja. I never liked it when that happened.

With regards to Ripcord, there was a good 30 or 40 issue run in the Marvel series where he was one of the main characters. He doesn't have any similarities with the RoC Ripcord though. I think they used Ripcord in the movie because they thought the name "Stalker" could be taken the wrong way.

His first appearance was in #32 and after #50 he dropped out of sight. Between #32 and 50 he didn't make appearances in all of the issues.

Ripcord is a beloved character for two reasons: 1)he had a very compelling story line for those 18 issues (he did appear in later issues - 1 in which that he learned that Candy was killed, others in the background), as he dealt with the very human problem of being in love with a civilian but could share virtually nothing about himself with her and lived a very dangerous life, and 2) he had a VERY cool action figure with a nice parachute, cool rifle, removable helmet and mask. The only downside to the figure was the head looked very old.
