Ripcord is a beloved character for two reasons: 1)he had a very compelling story line for those 18 issues (he did appear in later issues - 1 in which that he learned that Candy was killed, others in the background), as he dealt with the very human problem of being in love with a civilian but could share virtually nothing about himself with her and lived a very dangerous life, and 2) he had a VERY cool action figure with a nice parachute, cool rifle, removable helmet and mask. The only downside to the figure was the head looked very old.
However, fast forward to RoC, the movie has absolutely no relation to this comic back story. Ripcord was just a name they grabbed out of the bottom of a hat I think. It is truly inexplicable. It is because of these WTF issues which makes RoC a terrible movie. It has a total disregard and sometimes I think a disrespect for the original source material. That is why so many say it should not have even been called G.I.Joe since it bears little resemblance to what any fanboy would recognize as G.I.Joe.

I'm not the one that made the blanket statement.
There are Joe fanboys that think the movie was a good interpretation of Joe.

Oh, gotcha. I think you missed that he qualified that statement with "That is why there are so many who say...". He was stating that it was a particular group's opinion, not making a blanket statement.

It seems like if you grow close you are solidifying into a relationship - particularly between those two. I don't remember many - if any - of the Joes kissing anyone (including Ripcord and Candy) so that seems to have not been something Marvel wanted to introduce during this run. Still, issue 52 has Scarlet sharing that knows SE heart, and SS responds to that. Later, it is her anger at SS for sending SE in a killing frenzy she stabs SS. Or when SE is captured by Cobra and held at the Cobra Embassy, Scarlet moves heaven and earth to rescue SE. All of this draws one to say that while the Joes take care of their own, those two were almost inseperable and had each other's backs in a way that only one other Joe couple during the Marvel run seemed to, and that was Flint and Lady Jay.

Every real Joe fan hates the Rise of Cobra, its the worst movie ever made.
Larry Hama is the greatest writer the world has ever known and when he puts pen to paper, he creates the definitive Joe universe that every single Joe fan on the planet considers to be the actual Joe universe. Paramount should be ashamed for changing Ripcord's backstory. They obviously don't care about real Joe fans and are both insulting and disrespectful. Anyone that disagrees is obviously stupid and likes corny B.S. that would make any complete moron off the street happy. |
