I grew up watching the Sunbow cartoon.
But there are some superb stories in the Marvel comics. perfect example being issue 33. |

Ya know, had you asked me his question twenty years ago, I'd have gone with Sunbow, but now-a-days, I'll take Marvel.

Now I'm a huge fan of the Marvel run. Certainly, there are some issues that Hama had to work around product placement from Hasbro, but overall, the storytelling is fantastic and I think it holds up today much better than the cartoon. I still enjoy the cartoon for what it was/is, but the books are where it's at.

I say both. The Marvel stories were superior by far, but Sunbow brought the characters to life. When you think of Shipwreck, do you think of Marvel's version or Sunbow's? When you read your Marvel comics, and Cobra Commander was speaking, whose voice did you hear? Chris Latta's? If it weren't for Sunbow, Duke would be a footnote in GI Joe history. If it weren't for Marvel, Hawk would have been forgotten after 1982. Marvel also made Snake Eyes a key figure in GI Joe, where he was pushed to the backdrop in the Sundow series. Sunbow and Marvel just go together in the mighty universe of GI Joe. They worked together to make us love these toys!
