Here's a low-res scan of the original Fury Force sketch created in 1980 or thereabouts by Larry Hama. I've since lost the image file of the high-res scan so maybe somebody who has a copy can add to this thread (it was drawn on the back of a manila envelope, hence the yellow-ish background):
All of these characters would eventually make it into Hama's GI Joe designs sooner or later under different code names (except for Steeler, who would retain his code name). Additionally, Jelly (using that name) would become a supporting character in Larry Hama's Nth Man comic book series. I think I read somewhere that "Jelly" was the nickname of the top sergeant Hama served under during his stint as an EOD specialist in Vietnam. |

Yeah, that's who I meant (the black dude with a ball cap). IIRC, he's called "Jelly" in a conversation at some point, been a while since I read the series.

That's awesome, dude, thanks for posting that. Anyone else around here have a high-res scan?

The reason for the motorcycle in the charity set is that there's a pic of Lilah/Scarlett that Hama did with her on the bike.

Once again, posting on this site makes me mad that my collection is in stroage due to lack of space here in OK.

So I think that it's interesting that Brujo was the prototype for Leatherneck, who didn't come until much later in the toy line and comics. What was reason for this?

No idea. I guess Hama's original idea for a Marine member of the Joe team was somewhat more grounded visually (as opposed to the "Freddie Mercury-meets-Tom of Finland" looking toy design of the Gung-Ho toy) so he saved the Leatherneck codename for when a more appropriate-looking toy came out. |
