I came into collecting Joes around 86, where I followed the comic\cartoon religiously, but I always had an attachment mainly for the 82-86 characters, which kinda put eveything that come after in their shadow.
I see this mentallity alot, and even though I still collected till late 90 I still hold 82-86 as the key years.. I look back now and see that some of those late 80s early 90s Joes were really cool and I'm not just saying alley or night vipers, but some like Astro Vipers or Freefall. I started watching the DIC episodes where they were on orginally and really liked a lot of the characters of the first season primarily because they were new characters like night creeper, pathfinder, slavo, rampart, etc. It was also cool to see Cobra Commander in his awesome battle armor! The second season I did not care for as much because it was filled with older characters in new bright colored uniforms and they just seemed..off. The second season also had terrible animation and was way more slapstick that the first DIC season. What I am trying to do here is get an ongoing discussion on the era of Joes that doesnt get much discussion. I want to hear what was special for you in those times and who was your favs. An awesome memory of that era for me that I will never forget was Christmas of 89 when I received a Thunderclap and Crusader Space shuttle. Though I have almost all of the 82-86 guys now once again, I have decided to go back and get most of 87-91 guys, though I'm not sure on the 92-94 Joes, they just look..bad. So feel free to share your feelings on this under appreciated era of Joes in this thread.

80's Joe's is all there is to me. I don't even know any characters that came out after like 87.

87 is my favorite year for Joes. That's when they took the first big departure from military into sci-fi, and it just blew my mind as a kid. The movie coming out at that time (with even more sci-fi elements) also added to that. From then on, 88 to 90 I also enjoyed throughly, it's just so full of characters I like. But then on 91 even as a kid the direction the line was taking did not appeal to me and I was only interested on a select few. And on 92+ it seemed pretty clear to me that they had gone lazy and totally lost their focus.

I prefer 82-86, but some of the 87-94 items are super funky and just cool to look at. I tried to collect them all then I ran out of space, now I totally slowed down because I like a lot of the 25th items too. You know what I mean? Jelly Bean?

I agree 92-94 was just lazy and boring. I hated where all the weapons were just mainly reused 86-90 joe weapons all in one color for the character, plus the big spring loaded neon weapon of course. 1991 had some cool Joes though like Big Ben,incenerator,Crimson Gaurd Immortal, etc. I have seen pics before of prototypes of the prposed 95 line and some of that stuff looked decent, besides retarded things like ninja Flint\Road Pig..LOL.

The 90s gave us Big Ben, who is one of my top 5, so yeah...
I did 82 to 87 mostly, and Big Ben was the last Joe I ever got up until the 25th stuff

i think every release of the joes had its hits and misses. I never owned a grand slam. it looked like a grunt with lame pads. never owned airtight or any other character that was preominately yellow (except blowtorch). I always liked my joes to look as 'real' as possible.
so yeah for me, the farther they drifted away from the falcon/tunnel rat/hit and run look... the less i bought. |
