Unfortunately I only just started collecting Joe's when RoC came out and It's not hard to notice that they haven't been selling well. About half as well as Transformers and less than Star Wars, not counting the actual movie which has not sold well either.
I was just wondering if this is how it's always been or have Joe's been the cream of the crop in other lines such as 25th, or before?

Not since the 80s have Joes been a top selling toy.
The 25th did less then RoC (which was a decent seller at first, and probably will be again once the retailers can get rid of the overstock). It did good, but wasn't a huge seller.

Comparing how ROC is selling to how 25th/ME sold is apples and oranges. Yes ROC has moved more total units, but that is because they flooded the stores with the stuff. 25th/ME did not have as big a presence at retail but was hard to keep on the pegs. Nobody knows what 25th/ME would have sold if they had produced it in the numbers that ROC is, but I think it would have done very well based on how little there was on the pegs throughout the run.

Yeah, 80s Joes were the sh!t. They did so well, they were able to sell huge playsets for big bucks. Today, stores seem to have a hard time selling the little vehicles, much less the Pit playset

The reason there was so little on the pegs was because retailers weren't ordering it, which kept the production numbers down.
They didn't even order anything 25th after Jan. 2009, to make sure they could clear out the stock of 25th stuff before RoC hit. Which is an indication that it wasn't selling. 25th did great thru the online e-tailers, but wasn't a big box store retailer hit. Still seen some 25th stuff just sitting there well RoC is selling next to it. RoC was overordered because of anticipation of the movie. Total unit sales is a result of sales period, not how many units were sold. The more that sales, the more units get produced.

G.I. Joe was huge in the 80s, big in the 90s and then it felt like it drifted in and out as many retailers did not carry the toys, TRU always stayed faithful, then in the 2000s it seemed to pick back up. ROC is selling very well in most areas.
The big problem with the Joes is that there is no cartoon out and the only videogame is movie based so kids arent as interested. Toys sell well when accompanied by a cartoon. I love videogames too, so dont hate on what im going to say, but they ruin the kids. When i and many of us were growing up, there were no videogames, or there were but we didnt play them constantly. I played with toys until I got my PlayStation in the 7th grade. Now its cell phones, DS, and portable garbage. Kids need to be reintroduced to toys, expand their creativity by playing with their own story lines and what not. Final thing, GI Joe has always been a collected toy too.

I doubt it will die out at all. Less of a presence on the retail stores, sure.
But I think the 25th showed Hasbro that there is a good (not great, but good) market for Joes online thru places like BBTS and such. So I think it'll remain around as an online only if the retail stops selling. Which it's not in any danger of doing. The upcoming PoC stuff looks amazing.
