Unfortunately I only just started collecting Joe's when RoC came out and It's not hard to notice that they haven't been selling well. About half as well as Transformers and less than Star Wars, not counting the actual movie which has not sold well either.
I was just wondering if this is how it's always been or have Joe's been the cream of the crop in other lines such as 25th, or before? Just curious how you determined that it sells half as well as Transformers and less than Star Wars. Do you work in the toy industry or are you privy to some other source of information? |

Wasn't GI Joe like the first "action figure" back when it was introduced in the 60's and like a huge seller that's still around today albeit in a different form?

It shouldn't be a surprise to anyone that Joe is #3. Transformers got a HUGE boost from the movies and Star Wars is just Star Wars.

This generation coming up can relate to Transformers a lot more than the Joe line. And Star Wars.
They are getting bombarded with it on Cartoon Network. One of the big sellers right now (judging by the shelf space devoted, and my kids talking about what their friends like) is Bakugan. Bakugan is a ball that... wait for it... TRANSFORMS. From a ball into a, well, whatever it is. It's all about what they are exposed to. Comics play a tiny part now. In my youth, comics were everywhere. When i wanted to check out the 2009 Joe comic, i had to hunt pretty hard to find it, and i am in a big city. Comics created an interest in Joes, and vice versa. Cartoons were limited to a few channels, at specific times, and are now 24/7 with near limitless options. The 25th and RoC lines, in my humble, unresearched, and often ignored opinion, have done quite well when you look at what they are up against. My 2 cents... |

I still say Joe has two things working against it.
1) Walmart...they have been trying to kill the Joe line since they stopped carrying it right after the Valor line. Even before that it was basically a token presence for the store. And the reason why they want the line dead? The Corps if I recall correctly Walmart has or had some business arrangement with the company that produces The Corps. In fact I think the only reason Walmart carries Joe today is because the line has been reinventing itself every year for the past few years since VvsV....S6, then 25th's Modern, and now movie merch. This lack of dedication to the Joe product has caused a token space for Joe on shelves and a token ordering. The fact that the movie line was so scarce when the film was due in theaters and even weeks after it was released seems to confirm Walmart anti-Joe attitude. And before someone says Walmart carries Joe exclusives your right they're not dumb, exclusives sell, but even those have been SERIOUSLY limited, and in lots of areas just down right not available. Walmart like them or not is the retail box store trend setter. If the Wall says we're only ordering X amount of a product, other stores fall in line and order in similar quantities. In fact that's what happened after VvsV, Walmart said we're not carrying GI Joe and other stores did the same...Toys R Us being the exception. They seem to be the haven for Joes in the darkest times. 2) I've long suspected that G.I. Joe is a victim of anti-war feelings. The US has now been involved in a war on several fronts for some time now, and while I won't debate the rights and wrongs of why we are there, I do suspect that somehow with men and women, brothers and sisters, fathers and mothers returning crippled and or not at all that it effects the sales of military toys. Now before people say, "But Star Wars and Transformers are war toys too." Keep in mind Star Wars and Transformers are fantasy...your mom wasn't killed by a giant transforming bulldozer...you don't know someone who lost their dad to a Battle Driod attack. Somehow that element of fantasy sets those lines apart, from G.I. Joe whose primary enemy are terrorist (no matter what their being called thes days by Hasbro). Just my opinion. |

I doubt it will die out at all. Less of a presence on the retail stores, sure.
But I think the 25th showed Hasbro that there is a good (not great, but good) market for Joes online thru places like BBTS and such. So I think it'll remain around as an online only if the retail stops selling. Which it's not in any danger of doing. The upcoming PoC stuff looks amazing. |
