Particularly the Prefered weapons. If you're a Ninja it's a Hand-forged Steel Heirloom Katana and if not it's an 820 Selective Fire Long Range Rifle or something. It just seems like Hasbros not trying.

This happened in the 80s too. It seems that the writers are on- board early then their services are dismissed and you have a package designer (a great talent in it's own right) left to just reshuffle the same bits over and over.
And I've noticed this lately... a new figure without a story to link it to the world gets about a 5- second glance. In that time it either visually wows me or it does not. If it does, I buy it- if not, I never even look at it again. On the other hand, if a figure comes out that I know from the cartoon or comic books, this happens- if I like the way that PERSON fits into the story, I buy the figure regardless of what it looks like. If I'm so- so about them, I may keep looking at the figure until it grows on me and I buy it. If I Hate them in the story, I may still buy the figure to be the lead recipient of my other doods. our toys are really just instruments our imaginations use to write stories. When the toy exists without a good story, it's just plastic. Good call, Road Doc. |

My biggest problem is the Prefered weapons section. Take Jungle Ripcord for example, his PW is listed as the select fire rifle but comes with what I believe is two different shotguns and no rifles. I think it was pointed out in another thread thathis guns where both shotguns.

The new cards suck. But the one thing they have been doing is linking the character to the overall story. There's usually a mention of nanomites or stopping a Cobra scheme or something.
I wish they'd just get rid of the preferred weapon since they're just using the same ones for everyone. Get rid of it and get some more space for something else.

I enjoy the new layout- the way it looks like a security card- but the writing is weak.
Two of my favorite Joes in recent memory, Barrel Roll and Depth Charge, appealed just because of the way they were written. The plastic that gave them a face was good in all respects, but it was the paragraph and personal info that gave them life. Looking at the current stuff, you have no idea who's from where, what they can actually do, what they're like, etc. You only have what the movie gave you and what you can gather from the figure itself. And this is going to be especially mind-boggling if they introduce any new characters, because the new format doesn't offer the chance to know them like the old one. But, I suppose it's for the kids...

Classic cards are pure win. The new cards are very weak and simple and ugly.

I just bought some ROC figures yesterday, and the cashier attempted to swipe the filecard barcode (with cobra logo) twice! She finally figured out the UPC code was on the bottom of the product.
funny. |
