It's just that the kids prob don't spend as much time reading them like we did.
There was probably some poll taken in R&D. And it was like "cut backs in the file card division" |

I don't know if they have gotten lazy or just out of touch. For one, they went from file cards to these identification cards. There just isn't much background on the characters anymore. No real reference to military service or anything. Personally, I could care less that a ninja carries a firearm. However, you are right that it shouldn't be declared their primary weapon.

I see a G36, MP7, and I think that's a Springfield Armory XD. Neither of which is a "Heavy Machine Gun", or has a grenade launcher. Should really pay attention to that...

MAYBE in an effort to make it more realistic, they listed the troop's preferred weapon, but he/ she is not actually ISSUED that weapon and gets stuck with whatever is in the Arms Room. ? I love my Steyr AUG but damn if they don't keep issuing me an M4....

Nothing wrong with the M4. Just seems a bit smaller than it should be.

I will say that after checking out the RoC filecards I was a little let down. At first I thought it was just a case of seeing my past through rose colored glasses, but they really aren't anywhere near as cool, or informative. If they wanted to save money on ink, but still give you cool character bio's they should have had an internet tie in.
Like give the card they do now with the snippet, but make the number under tha barcode and actual code to access the character's full bio page at GIJoe.com, or something. I think kids these days would find that really cool, and it's alot easier to update the website with current info on the Joes as new movies, cartoons, and comics come out. Hasbro could have really went all out with the media tie-in for the toys, and brought Joe into the next century. Shame really. -13 |

I get that they attempted to update the filecards into a "21st Century" design—since "Rolodex" style filecards are outdated formats and everything like that is mostly digital now, or at least perceived to be digital—which is probably why they went to an ID card format.
The thing that doesn't make sense is that sort of information isn't written out on an ID card. You don't have a bio on an ID card, or anything of that nature. Photo, name, department or clearance level, bar code or magnetic strip, and that's it. They didn't completely think that through, even though it's "for kids". A lot of times nowadays details and subtle touches get lost because folks throw that excuse at it. ROC was campy with subpar CGI because "it was for kids", like they don't deserve better. A product is a product, and it represents the brand behind it so long as their logo is on it. For a strong brand statement, you don't "let things slide" in certain areas because it's a lesser portion of the brand. That's a weak brand statement. I've worked on all sorts of corporate branding, and even design for children's stuff and when I argue the design to keep it as good as possible (while the client just says, "oh, it's just a kid's product... don't put so much thought into it") it's a failure on their part as far as a brand. |
