I went through RIP's program as a PFC. RIP'S is the Recon Induct Program. So it is poss to start out in a more advanced unit. But in reality you would be a Lcpl to a Sgt in the Marines by the time you had enough training to be in Recon or a STAY platoon.

I just think the Joes might need a better spread of no-ranks and NCO's. Most Staff NCO's tend to stick to the Admin side of the field. Not saying there aren't Staff NCO's who don't lead from the front. But Cpl's and Sgts. are the go to guys in the Corps when it comes to getting people to move. That's why I always respected Duke's file card, gave up becoming an officer to stay closer to his men, doing what he does best. (even if he's in the Army! ;) Joking

Exactly, everyone polices their own areas, and shares duties in the common areas. That's just how it's done. In the barracks there are usually lists that rotate duties, atleast that's how it worked when I was in. I can't speak on current SOP.
As far as vehicle piloting, driving, etc. It's true that many soldiers are crosstrained in vehicle operation, however, that's usually for classes of vehicles they use on a regular basis. (ie: tank drivers can likely operate more then one form of armored vehicle, mechanized soldiers can "normally" operate more then one type of wheeled vehicle, and I would think pilots can normally find their way around more then one type of aircraft.) It's pretty unbelievable for say someone like Steeler to be F-14 qualified, though. For instance, when I was in the Hum-V was still making it's way into units as the standard issue vehicle. Many units still used Cuc-V's. (Chevy Diesel pick ups and blazers) We also used 5 ton trucks, and 2.5's (the old kind). I was licensed on all of these. However, as we started getting new equipment in, and new privates, they stopped crosstraining for some bizarre reason. Our company was one of the last in our battalion to get new vehicles. They mismanaged the transition so poorly that we had 4 2.5 ton trucks left, all the old style stick shift, manual steering jobs, and by the time I outprocessed I was the only one in my platoon licensed to operate one. I was also the only squad level enlisted man who knew how to drive a stick. By the time I left the new privates could drive the Hum-V's and nothing else, one of them didn't even have any license at all. It was pretty silly. I understand that Joe isn't the real military, but the amount of time it would take to get crosstrained on EVERY vehicle class Joe uses after having a distiguished enough career in ONE branch of the service, you'd be retired. lol -13 |
