Those 25th Cobra Island ALLEY VIPERS.
Guess Cobra needed glorified hazard safety cones or skeet shooting targets. The dayglo orange is awful and they can't possibly see crap in those stupid helmets. If the visor were black or some other color then I could see it maybe being some sort of "tinted visor". But its orange and there are no eyeholes or slits plus there's a large raised cobra emblem smack in the middle! Maybe I missed it, but are they supposed to have sonar abilities or something? Otherwise how the heck do they "see"? Dayglo orange troops that can't see anything are useless except as safety cones or sitting duck targets. Last edited by mynamehere; 12-12-2009 at 06:05 PM.. |

All of them after the originals. The troopers, and officers were far, far better. I like the idea of the original Vipers being the kind of elite troopers. Like the Marine Force Recon of the Cobra Legions or something.
Seriously though, the adding "Viper" to the end of every Cobra "MOS" was one of the lamest things ever. It made no realistic sense. Why would Cobra want to get individual uniforms for every single job in the organization? The equipment would have been expensive enough. Hasbro could have spent all that time and money on accessory packs, vehicles, and playsets geared toward specific jobs and situations. That would have been awesome. -13 |

Okay, ... this one may be a little CONTROVERSIAL. ; )
I personally find the original Cobra (trooper) and Officer worthless. We frequently see them pop up in GI Joe comics and cartoons long after their toy disappeared from shelves. They were still absorbing Joe bullets during the Cobra Civil War, for crying out loud! Cobra advanced to the point where they had a cloned emperor and a battle-armored usurper fighting on an artificially raised island with robots and flying tanks... BUT THESE DUDES IN BLUE JUMPSUITS AND MASKS ARE STILL RUNNING AROUND. Imagine if you're watching CNN. They're playing a story on Afghanistan, and you see some Marines decked out in body armor packed with gear, rucksacks and assorted weaponry... then they pan over, and there's a bunch of Minutemen brandishing muskets to support them! The Trooper and Officer are so outdated it's silly to keep them around. The Viper (86) was a step in the right direction, with tactical gear and a souped-up rifle... but somehow, these Hydra-looking goons manage to work their way back into the spotlight EVERYTIME. Tom

Because they were the real deal. Turn on CNN you might see soldiers decked out in armor fighting guys using Mosin-Nagant 91/30's. A Cobra Trooper with an AK, or a Dragonov is still a very dangerous adversary.

Quite true... It doesn't matter if he's dressed like Raggedy-Ann, if he has a weapon and the will to use it...

You're both right. Anyone with a gun is dangerous.
Much like the AK, a lightweight, flexible enemy is useful - but only so long as they're not hit by a single bullet. Cobra progressively updated themselves and improved their tech... If they stayed in their 1982 mode, that's fine. But they had the means and the desire to keep their troops fighting and killing as long as they could. Body armor, superior weaponry and protective gear (Viper mask) is a must-have - especially if you're going to fight the enemy and not just irritate them (see gentleman with an AK)

My vote exactly. What is he trying to scare the joes with that uniform? "What the F is that? Oh it's a lame costumed eel. Let's shoot it!"

The Cobra Troopers looked like SWAT teams dressed in WW2 German military uniforms. How the hell did they look phony? Get the F@*k out've here, lol. Plus the Joes were green berets and Delta Force taking on a a regular army. GI JOE' concept evolves around a small elite team taking on special missions and operations .When they used to many Special Forces to take on large enemy forces that doesnt pan out well often, especially if up against a well trained and equipped enemy.
To be honest though, as much as liked the original Cobra Viper, it was just a motorcycle helmet dude with Civil War era Calvary boots, lol. I mean they looked like Mounted police that economically couldn't afford a motorcycle..the Joes had them at the time. The Cobra Bat helmets were better designed I think and fit more the file card's descriptions for the Viper helmet which they're being developed today for tomorrow's soldiers. Body armor, superior weaponry and protective gear (Viper mask) is a must-have - especially if you're going to fight the enemy and not just irritate them (see gentleman with an AK) Also, as far as the old WWI, and WWII era bolt action rifles go, they all pack quite a bit more punch then modern assault rifles. 7.62x54R, 30-06, and 7.92x57 FMJ ball ammo per round is ALOT more deadly and able to punch through modern body armor easier then .556 rounds we use now. The downside to these rifles were that they were heavy, long, had a low rate of fire, and ammo capacity. However, in the hands of someone who knows how to use one they are nothing to roll your eyes at. A squad of modern outfitted soldiers against a handful of locals armed with these rifles in an urban setting could be in for ALOT more then they bargained for if they have your attitude. -13 Edited to add: Umm a Viper mask is a big shiny target on the most vital part of your body...I'd stick with the dark blue pajamas. lol Last edited by Trooper13; 12-12-2009 at 07:02 PM.. |
