Darth Henning and his great stuff inspired me to put pen to paper, so to speak, and get my Joeverse down onto paper and start writing. Since this will be posted and people (hopefully) will want more updates, it'll force me to keep it going.
Many thanks to the guys in the Filecard thread for bouncing ideas around and giving me inspiration on how to incorporate things into my 'Verse. Even Cobra La, which I absolutely loathe, has found a way into the 'Verse. At it's heart it should be recognizable as Joe, but I've made some changes and added/subtracted what I want. I'm a fan of secret societies and hidden mysteries (like the stuff in Da Vinci Code and National Treasure) so I've added some of that to my Joeverse. These first "chapters" posting won't have any of that, it'll make itself known thru other stories. I'm also going with a different feel for some of these. It's something I hope is pretty unique and interesting but also feel like it could get overdone pretty quickly. The first couple are done in this style, but some others won't. The basics is that with the formation of Cobra and then later on the Coils, along with others (Iron Grenadiers, Red Shadows) the President felt (and had evidence to support it in the form of failed operations) that the normal Special Forces of the US couldn't cope with what was now called the Ultra-Terrorists (I hate this name btw and will gladly take suggestions on what to call 'em), so they created a new unit independant of the Department of Defense to handle these threats. To get around the fact that the DoD forces aren't allowed to operate in the US borders, the unit also has connections to the Department of Justice. And thus the Joint Operations Element was created, Taskforce Omega. It's headed up by General Joseph Colton. Under him are the 3 Directors that handle the 3 departments: Intelligence (Col. Jericho), Domestic Operations (Col. Clancy), Direct Action Operations (Gen. Flagg, with Vice-Director, Gen. Hawk). The J.O.E. unit is independant from the US government, plausible denability and because of some of the back story the President doesn't trust alot of Congress. There's also some lines set up with the international community for resources and personal, but those countries have even greater denability. What does all this mean? Have to read and find out.

The Red Shadows
Task Force Omega File 10928-00 – J.O.E. Clearance Level 4 - Eyes Only File Transcribed: Hotline 05/20/09 13:30 hrs File Created: Vice-Director, Direct Action Operations, Gen. Hawk Field Operatives: Flint, OiC Bayou Sneak Peek Low-Light Cool Breeze Repeater Command Center: Gen. Hawk Hotline Scoop Extraction: Lift-Ticket Wild Bill Airborne 10928-01 Mission: Ops received intelligence that there was Iron Grenadier (re: File 1024-01) activity centered around Wilding Industries (re: File 1053-01) laboratory approximately 40 miles outside Berlin. D-Ops sending recon team to verify IG activity and assess situation in field. 10928-02 Mission Briefing Briefing Room A, The Pit, 08:20 hrs The man called General Hawk stood in front of the large computer screen, all eyes trained on him. In his early 50s, Hawk was still an imposing man, not having lost any of his bearing that made him a legend at Army bases nationwide. General Clayton “Hawk” Abernathy was the Army’s version of the boogeyman, used to frighten new recruits. “Better shape up or the ghost of Gen. Abernathy will come and make you clean latrines with your tongue”. Clayton Abernathy was dead, but the man lived on as Hawk. He moved to the side so that the people in the briefing room could get a better look the screen. On it was a medium sized laboratory complex, three decent sized main buildings, 3 or 4 stories each, and a couple of smaller outlying buildings. The whole thing was surrounded by a barbed wire fence with a single guarded gate. Guard posts stood at the corners. The hi-res satellite imagery shimmered as the picture was updated. Trucks had moved, guards had moved. “On screen is Wilding Industries. Specialize in metal alloys. You all have the file on the company in front of you. Read it and memorize it. Hotline will quiz you prior to launch.” There was some chuckles in the room. Hawk looked out at the assembled mission team and remembered the days he would have been going on one of these. Not anymore. Now his job was to send these men out to do the dirty work. Sometimes he hated his job. But “for the greater good” and all that, he signed and turned his attention back to the screen. “Innocent enough looking place. Scoop, Image 2 please,” Hawk gestured to the new image that appeared on screen. It was the same orientation of the complex, with a greenish tinge that indicated night vision cameras. “This is 02:13 hrs, notice the truck coming in at the gate. All lights, including the trucks are off. Most satellite survelliance, if it was even looking at this place, wouldn’t pick anything up. Ours did, only because we knew to look. Scoop, Image 3.” The image on screen shimmered again and was replaced with one that looked similar, except the truck had advanced closer to one of the buildings. A dark line could be seen at the building, an overhead door opening in the night vision. “Still lights out. Imagery Analysis says that we’re lucky we can even see the door opening,” Hawk said using a laser pointer to indicate the door. “They say the lights are very low within the building itself.” “Someone wanted this to be secret,” one of the assembled men said. “Right Sneak Peek. They’re being extra careful. Like I said, if we hadn’t gotten word and were watching, we never would have seen this.” Hawk turned back to the men. “We had the eye in the sky on this place for a week. Those images were from last night. There’s been a truck showing up every night, relatively the same time, for the week we’ve been watching.” “Why are we watching Hawk,” another man asked. “Nothing out of the ordinary, relatively speaking, for us to be interested.” Hawk smiled and made a motion with his hand, the image behind him changed again to what appeared to be a zoomed in shot of the truck backed up to a loading dock. Not much could be made out, the angle of the satellite wasn’t good for a clear image of the dock, but some shapes could be made out. There were some figures at the truck and what appeared to be a man standing guard at the edge. The man appeared to be heavily armoed with a helmet with sharp points and what looked to be a gas mask of some kind. “Is that an Iron Grenadier,” the same man asked. “We think it is Flint. And that’s why we’re involved. Scoop, Image 5.” The image behind Hawk changed to more of an overview of the complex with most of the image being surrounding country side. The image had 3 spots indicated on it. “Mission is as follows: Lift Ticket will drop the team off at Point A at 20:30 hrs by Tomahawk,” Hawk indicated the spot on the image. “Team will overland to the target and set up surveillance points no later then 22:00 hrs. Flint, because the imagery isn’t that great and we haven’t been able to discern guard rotation patterns at those hours due to the black out of the site, you’ll have to decide in the field on the best spots.” “Right, judging by the terrain and cover, I’d say north and west. Definitely want to be facing that loading dock. I’m assuming, since you didn’t mention anything, that the same building and loading dock is used every night?” “Correct assumption. Repeater and Low-Light are security for extraction. This is a watch mission gentlemen. No gunfire. Watch and learn. Confirm IG activity. We want to know if it’s a legit IG operation or if someone just bought a suit of black market armor and wants to look important. Flint, you’ll decide when enough intel has been gathered, make sure we get a legit confirmation, but be out before lights up. Lift-Ticket will be at Point A awaiting extraction, Point B is secondary extraction with Point C being third.” “That’s it gentlemen. Mission launchs at 10:30 hrs. Dismissed.” “Yo,” the assembled soldiers said as they all stood up and saluted as Hawk left the room. 10928-03 On-Mission Report/Command Center 20:30 hrs Radio/Lift Ticket: Lift Ticket to Ops. Crew is away. Shutting bird down. Radio/Airborne: All clear Lift. No eyes visible. 20:31 hrs Hawk: Op is on people. Ears open. This is ears only. Eye in the sky only updates every 20 mins. Scoop, I want the new image every 20 mins on the screen. Scoop: Yes sir. 21:50 hrs Radio/Sneak Peek: Hold up Bayou. Guard moving along the fence line with dog. Wait.. Wind change. Go. Radio/Bayou: In position. Your turn Sneak Peek. Radio/Flint: Team B in position overlooking east gate. Eyes on the gate Breeze. Radio/Cool Breeze: Yo man, got it covered. No action. Radio/Sneak Peek: Team A in position. Flint, next time I get to pick cover positions. This stand is tiny. Radio/Flint: It’s only tiny if you get made. Radio/Bayou: True that. 21:55 hrs Scoop: Updated image on screen sir. Hawk: Timestamp? Scoop: 21:53 sir. Hawk: Are those my boys trying to be stealthy? I make 2 to the east. Remind me to tell Flint that part of hiding is hiding from the eyes in the sky nowadays. Scoop: Yes sir. 01:20 hrs Radio/Sneak Peek: Looks like the two on either side have some kind of laser device. Pointing towards the truck from the dock. Radio/Bayou: That’s probably how the truck backs up in the dark, some kind of laser guidance system. Radio/Cool Breeze: Not your standard issue terrorist gear. Radio/Flint: Chatter to a minimum boys. Radio/Sneak Peek: Looks like we got another coming to the party. Looks bulky. Could be it. 01:31 hrs Hawk: Did he say Wilder Vaughn? Give them the extract signal Scoop. Scoop: Roger that. 03:03 hrs Radio/Airborne: All aboard. Start it up Lift-Ticket. Radio/Lift-Ticket: Roger that. Up we go. Radio/Lift-Ticket: Lift-Ticket to base. Boys are aboard and we’re up and heading out. Scoop: Good op. Hawk: It’s not over until my boys are back in the PIT. 10928-04 On-Mission Report/Insertion Point A 20:30 hrs Flint jumped out of the Tomahawk, this one had been modified for silent running and blacked out, but it was still loud and windy under the rotors. He reached up to prevent his beret from being knocked off. Shouldn’t have worn the thing, he thought, will have to take it off when mask up at the target anyways. He looked around, the others were all off loaded and he could see Airborne in the back of the Tomahawk with a pair of night vision specs giving the land the once over. He motioned to Cool Breeze to take point and then Low-Light to be drag, and the 6-man J.O.E. team headed south towards Wilding Industries. It was to be a 15 mile hike in total black-out conditions with minimal radio silence. 15 miles, hour and a half to do it in, unknown terrain and to make it completely undetected. Just another day in the Joes, Flint thought. Wilding Industries, 21:45 hrs Flint called a halt ½ a mile from the complex on a hill overlooking the buildings. Sneak Peek was next to him, the others at the bottom of the hill. They were using pairs of next generation night vision specs to survey the complex. All the lights were out and there was no activity at the guard posts that could be seen. “Got 15 minutes to set up position. Have to make this quick,” Flint said pulling out a printed copy of the complex from the satellite photos that had been in the file they had been given. “How will Hawk know if we’re a couple minutes late?” Sneak Peek asked looking towards the gate and motioning Flint to look that way. A shadow, shaped like a man with a dog, could be seen coming out of the guardhouse. “Looks to be standard guard uniform. Looks to be a Pit.” “Great, dogs,” Flint muttered. “Hawk’s got the eye in the sky watching. I gurantee you he’s had the boys in Imagery playing with the photos and have us spotted as we speak.” Sneak Peek looked up to the sky and waved. “You know you’ll be in for it when we get back,” Flint said. “Tree cluster, north by northeast of the dock side.” “Yeah, but it’ll be worth it for that image. I’ll have to see if can get Mainframe to blow it up poster size for me. The stand of the three oaks? Not that much foliage and getting there will be a bitch if they have optics.” “You see anything else? At least you have that stand of trees. East facing the gate has nothing. Better hope Cool Breeze blacked out everything. Thank god he was convinced to get rid of those metal cuffs.” “I hear that. East, you’ll have a bitch of a time getting back here if things go bad. Where are you putting Repeater and Low-Light?” “Here, or here abouts. I’ll let Low-Light pick his cover position. I’m more concerned with Repeater covering your ass at extraction. You’ll have the money clips.” “Thanks, didn’t know you cared.” “Don’t let it go to your head. Right, let’s head down and tell the others the good news.” 01:16 hrs “Flint, come take a gander” Cool Breeze said from his position on the hill. Flint belly crawled up the small hill to take position next to Cool Breeze. Luckily for the J.O.E. team the Wilding Industries complex had been built in a little valley, with some rocky hills overlooking it. The one group of trees where Team A was positioned was it for cover except for these things that could barely be called boulders, which was were Cool Breeze and Flint were trying to hide behind. This is why we get the big bucks, Flint thought to himself, taking his night vision specs and looking down onto the gate. The guard they had noted earlier, still only two that had been spotted both with dogs, walked out of the guardhouse as a truck pulled up to the gate. The driver waved outside the cab and the guard waved back and the gate swung up. The truck pulled in. No lights were visible on the truck, not even braking lights. “I wonder if there’s a switch in the truck to turn the brake and running lights on and off,” Cool Breeze whispered. “The joker gets outside of the place, switches ‘em back on and voila, he’s street legal again.” “Most likely. I’d be more curious to know how that truck is running so silently,” Flint whispered back and hit the button for his throat mike. “Team A, heads up. Got truck activity heading your way. One guard at gate. No ID on driver or passengers if any.” 01:17 hrs “Roger that,” Sneak Peek side into his throat mike. “Eyes on the prize Bayou. Tracking the truck now. The door open yet?” “Not yet.” Sneak Peek tracked the truck as it made it’s slow and cautious way to the north side of the largest building. Slow and cautious because of the lack of lights from the buildings and the truck itself. “Wonder how the driver backs up without missing with no lights.” “Find out in a second Peek, the doors are opening. Damn that’s hard to make out,” Bayou said. “You get the doors, I’m watching the rest.” “Right. Doors up 1/2,” Sneak Peek said thumbing on his throat mike. “We have doors opening. On schedule.” Sneak Peek watched as the doors were open fully, knowing that is next gen specs were recording all that he was seeing. “Can’t make out much, interior is dark as night. Make out 4.. no 5 figures. No armored yet. Wait, 2 on either side of truck, what are they doing?” 01:21 hrs Sneak Peek upped the zoom on the specs. He cursed silently to himself. Couldn’t Brainstorm work up a pair with better zoom and resolution, things were starting to look a bit fuzzy. The angle wasn’t the best with the truck and the dock, he could just make out the armored figure approaching the edge. Definitely was body armor, not really that bulky but Sneak Peek could make out the plates on the wrists and shins. “Not full armor, not like the IGs. We got plates on the wrists, shins and that appears to be it. Not the best angle or picture quality. Wait… yes.. Pads at the shoulders and knees, might be plates at the shoulders. Looks bulky at the chest, wouldn’t rule out some kind of heavier cloth. Can’t get a look at helmet yet.” “Two figures in the truck cab, driver and passenger,” Bayou reported. “No additional movement.” “Guard is back in the house,” Sneak Peek heard Flint report. Sneak Peek watched as the armored man moved to the side of the truck dock as the other men lifted up the rear door of the truck. As the armored man moved he got into a spot with less shadows and Sneak Peek could make out the helmet. The helmet was similar to those worn by Cobra Troopers, fitting on the top and flaring down at the sides and back, except this one was longer, completely covering the back of the neck. The man turned again, looking towards the cab of the truck and Sneak Peek got a good view of the front of the helmet. “That’s definitely not IG issue, not even blackmarket. Something new. Open at the eyes, some kind of facemask, no shield. Similar to the IG that it could be respiratory. Can’t tell at this range.” “Sneak, take a gander at who’s getting out of the cab, passenger side,” Bayou whispered. “Is that who I think it is?” Sneak Peek turned his attention to the front of the truck. Without lights it was hard to make out but Sneak Peek had seen the man climbing down from the cab of the truck in file photos many times. He was bearder, color couldn’t be made out, and wore a long trenchcoat. The man walked with an aritrocractic air and a nonchalance that spoke of server arrogance and confidence. Sneak Peek thumbed on his throat mike. “Flint, we have Wilder Vaughn on site.” 01:31 hrs Flint heard the 3 quick squelches come across his earpiece. “We got extract command. Everyone pull back to Position Delta,” he ordered into his throat mike and started belly crawling back down. 10928-05 After-Mission Report: Flint, OiC Extraction went fine. No shots fired. Successful operation. We were in and out with no one the wiser. The appearance of Vaughn onsite was a surprise but by the lack of security he’s either not being careful, overconfident (which is a fault of his) or just didn’t realize his operation had been compromised. Still have no idea what is going on at Wilding Industries, but that’s for the next operation and the boys in intelligence to take care of. 10928-06 Vice-Director, Direct Action Operations report: Gen. Hawk Team arrived safely back at the PIT, no injuries, no shots fired. That part of the op was successful. The team was able to get better footage of the armored soldiers at Wilding Industries. Wilder Vaughn making an appearance was a surprise. Intel had him taken out of the picture awhile ago by Cobra. They must have gotten it wrong, need to correct that. Will have to talk to Col. Jericho and have intel look into this further. Suggest they start with Wilding Industries, there’s more to the place then meets the eye, and had no previous indications of a link to Vaughn. Could this be an attempt to restart his Red Shadows operation? Analysis of the imagery provided by Sneak Peek’s recorder indicates that the armor is not that of an IG. There isn’t any hard plate armor for the chest, arms, or thighs. All hard plate is at shoulders, wrists and ankles. Better mobility? The helmet is an odd thing. We’ll need to capture one intact in order to get Engineering to perform a complete analysis. I hate leaving an op with so many unanswered questions. Next Directors meeting we’ll have to get a long-intel op going on Vaughn and his new soldiers.

Mangler
Task Force Omega File 202-00 – J.O.E. Clearance Level 1 - Eyes Only File Transcribed: Catwalk 06/05/09 03:30 hrs File Created: Gen. Hawk Operatives: Duke Beachhead Intelligence: Pysche-Out Dial-Tone 112-01 Objective: Recruitment of Thomas C. Mahoney 112-02 Filename: Thomas C. Mahoney Callsign: Mangler D/O/B: XX/XX/XX P/O/B: Toledo, Ohio Paygrade: E-4 112-03 No Command Center On-Mission Report filed. 112-04 On-Mission Report: Duke, OiC Met Mahoney at Fort Bragg. Brass had gotten the barracks cleared out for us. Mahoney had just been released from the hospital the week prior and been on downtime waiting to be reassigned. His entire Ranger Unit, except for him, had been wiped out by a Cobra Viper Squad in the Congo on a black ops hostage rescue mission. Needless to say the mission wasn’t successful. Mahoney was very receptive to our offer once we demonstrated knowledge of the bastards that had wiped out his unit. Might have Pysche-Out give him the once over for any revenge notions he might have. 112-05 After-Mission Report: Duke, OiC Another recruitment successful. The kid is young, younger then we normally take. But his first hand encounter with Cobra means we had to take him or else he probably would have been stirring up trouble on base trying to figure out why the suits weren’t investigating the incident. Hope he works out. 112-06 Vice-Director of Direct Action Operations Report: General Hawk “This way,” the soldier, who had been identified as Grand Slam, said to Mangler taking off down the corridor. Mangler got into step beside the man. He was wearing green camo pants, some kind of work pant as there were more pouches then normal and spaces for a couple screw drivers and what looked to be a pair of needle nose pliers, and wore an olive green t-shirt. The camo pattern was one that Mangler couldn’t identify. The man wore no rank or unit insignia so Mangler didn’t feel out of line keeping step with the man. He had been in the office of a man named Sky Dive who had said he was the “Unit Personal Manager”, what that meant exactly Mangler didn’t know. The man had given a quick orientation, opened the door to his office and grabbed the first soldier walking by with orders to “bring to Hawk”. Grand Slam seemed to have been the one unlucky enough to be walking by at that time. “What’s your name soldier?” Grand Slam asked. “Thom..” “Try again,” Grand Slam said smiling. “Oh yeah, right.. sorry..” “Don’t apologize to me, “Grand Slam said “Mess up in front of one of the Generals and well…” “Right. Mangler sir.” “Don’t sir me. I’m not one you salute, but this guy..,” Grand Slam said as he stopped, stood at attention and saluted. Mangler followed suit. “Sir,” both said in unison. The man walking by nodded and kept walking. He was wearing a blue colored uniform. Again there were no rank or unit insignia to indicate who he had been. Something about the way he walked told Mangler he was Air Force and a Fighter Jock to boot. “That was Skystriker,” Grand Slam said walking again. “One of the Fighter Jocks if you couldn’t tell.” “I figured,” Mangler said looking over his shoulder. “Uhm… how’d you know his rank?” “I’ve been here long enough,” Grand Slam said smiling. “It’ll take some getting used to and you’re bound to screw up a couple dozen times on who to salute and who not to. For the most part, unless it’s one of the Generals or Directors, it’s not going to get you KP duty or anything like that. But we’re still all Uncle Sam’s boys around here, well except for the DoJ guys, but they salute just like we do and Basic does a good job ingraining saluting into the blood.” “I hear that,” Mangler said. “What’s your MOS? Ranger right?” “Yeah, only a year now. Was the SAW.” “I was thinking you seemed a little on the young side for this unit but… oh wait… you’re the one whose unit got hit by Cobra?” “Cobra?,” Mangler asked. “You mean those fuckers with the reflective helmets and body armor?” “Yeah, those are called Vipers. Damn man, sorry about that. Whole unit right?” “Just me, only survivor, spent a couple weeks in the hospital. Arm where the bullet went thru still hurts.” “Hear that, I got one thru the shoulder couple years back. Tends to hurt when it rains. Sorry to hear about the unit.” “Thanks,” Mangler said his mood darkening, those men had been like brothers to him. They hadn’t served together long but that didn’t matter, once a Ranger always a Ranger. “But I guess I’ll get the opportunity for some revenge here.” “Yeah.. uhm.. don’t mention that revenge thing to the General,” Grand Slam cautioned. “Good way to get booted out of the unit and well you died to get here, don’t want to know what happens to get out.” “Not planning on going anywhere.” They walked in silence for a bit. Mangler noticed the starkness of the hallways. White doors in white walls. The doors were all accessed by keypads with voice boxes and slide into the walls. They had a wood finish but Mangler was sure they were steel doors. Grand Slam caught him looking. “Pretty plain huh,” he said indicating the walls and doors. “That’s the government for you. This part of the base is as plain as can be, the hallways at least. Luckily the barracks buildings aren’t. Not sure what one you’re in, but the Floor Sargeant will give you the tour. We’re allowed some expression in the barracks, not much but some, still the military even when we’re underground.” “Floor Sargeant?” “You went to college? Remember the RAs? Kind of like that. He’ll bring you around the barracks and such, help you get checked in, show the PX, the library, the gym and the cinema. All that kind of stuff.” “Cinema?” “Mangler, we’re a secret unit that is pretty much confined to base,” Grand Slam laughed. “We also live in a big cave underground. We need something to keep us from going stir crazy during the little downtime we have. The base has everything you could ask for. Got a bowling alley even. I think Van Helsing is playing tonight.” “That the monster one with Hugh Jackman? Directed by that guy that did the Mummy right? Sommers?” “Yep, that’s the one,” Grand Slam said. “Pretty good movie. I like the Mummy movies better.” “I couldn’t stand those, think the guy is a hack.” “Each their own,” Grand Slam said. “Take it you’re not a sci-fi fan?” “Not really,” Mangler answered. “I do like Stephen King, does that count?” “King huh? You should talk with Sneak Peek, he’s a huge King fan to. I guess it counts. Me, I love the stuff. Comic book fan too. We got a real good library down here. Up to date. Not sure where Stanley , Honda Lou and Freight get all the stuff and on time. Always been a sci-fi fan, all that stuff, kind of goes hand in hand with what I do around here.” “What’s that,” Mangler asked. He figured Grand Slam was some kind of tech with the pants he was wearing, but was a weird name for a tech. But what did he know, he was given the name Mangler, and didn’t know why. “I’m part of the HASO unit,” Grand Slam said proudly. “HASO?” “High Altitude Sniper & Observation. We’re a 3 man unit. I’m the Forward Observer, Laser Targeter. Skyduster is security/spotter and Barrel Roll is the sniper.” “Some kind of airborne insertion,” Mangler asked trying to piece the terms together. “Yes and no,” Grand Slam said. “We come in by air certainly, but we don’t use parachutes.” “Then how..” “Jet packs,” Grand Slam said smiling. “Honest to god, real life jet packs.” “What?,” Mangler asked. What kind of unit had he gotten himself into. Jet packs? The bastards that had attacked and taken out his Ranger unit in the Congo had been carrying some pretty high tech, but jet packs? “The J.U.M.P., stand for Jet Mobile Propulsion Unit. See the bad guys, they have high tech crap, we have stuff that may not be quite as high tech, but we make up for it with skill and guts. My JUMP took a hit last op I was on, was on my way to Engineering when Skydive volunteered me to escort you.” “You seriously use a jetpack,” Mangler asked wondering if this was going to be part of some new recruit hazing or something. “That I do,” Grand Slam said “Pure sci-fi, and I love it.” They came to a stop at a large double door blocking the hallway. Either side of the door were two uniformed MPs with issued weapons. They were a gray and blue camo pattern that Mangler didn’t recognize. The men stood at relative attention but they weren’t rigid. Mangler wondered how long their shifts were. Standing guard at the end of a bland hallway would be boring. “New guy to see General Hawk,” Grand Slam said. “Right,” the left guard said moving and hitting a keypad that had been behind him. The doors slide open. Mangler noticed that these were pretty thick and heavy looking. “Have a nice day,” the guard said smiling. They continued down a much shorter corridor that didn’t have as many doors off it. “Right, this part of the base is invite only,” Grand Slam said indicating the doors around him. “Private offices of the Generals, Admirals and Directors. The big boys. Usually, if you get called down here it’s not good. In fact, the only time you’ll ever get called to Gen. Colton’s office, that one down at the end, you might as well make out your will.” They stopped in front of the first door on the right, about 20 feet down the hallway. The nameplate next to the door, above the keypad/voice box, read: General Hawk, Direct Action Operations. “None of the big boys have personal secretaries, so it’s not like your normal base. You open the door, face to face with the general himself.” Grand Slam hit the button and a couple of seconds later a stern voice came thru the buzzer. “Yes?” “Grand Slam with Mangler, new recruit. Skydive said to bring him to see you sir.” The door clicked and slide open. Inside was a decent sized office done with fake wood paneling. There were numerous pictures along the walls, mostly depiciting battles and army actions, Mangler recognized a couple of them. A bookcase stood in a corner, Mangler assumed they were the standard military texts would see in any generals office. A flag stood on a pole in the other corner, where an Army dress uniform stood on a form to hold it in shape. Mangler almost gasped when he saw the amount of medals on the uniform. In the middle of the room was a mahogany desk, large, with 2 plain chairs in front of it. A couch was against the wall. The man seated at the desk didn’t look up. He had brownish/blond hair just starting to show traces of gray. He was busy signing some documents on the desk. Both men snapped to attention and saluted. The man looked up, as stern a face as the voice had sounded. “At ease,” he said returning the salute. “Is that all Grand Slam? Don’t you have a JUMP to be fixing?,” He said without looking up. “Was on my way there, sir,” Grand Slam said relaxing. Mangler still stood at relaxed position with his arms behind is back looking straight ahead. “Skydive caught me in the hallway and asks if I escort Mangler here.” “Did Skydive mention when the funeral was?,” Hawk asked looking thru the paperwork on his desk. “Not to me sir,” Grand Slam said. “Knowing Skydive he’ll have the film sent to Manglers room. Who wouldn’t want to watch their own funeral?” “My funeral,” Mangler said “I know I had to die to be here, but why would I want to watch my own funeral?” “You will,” Grand Slam said a little sadly. “Maybe not right away, but sometime you’ll want to see it.” “Right,” the man who must be General Hawk said to Grand Slam. “Dismissed.” “Sir,” Grand Slam said, flashing a quick salute and walking out the office. “Sorry about your unit son,” Hawk said turning his attention to Mangler. “Thank you sir.” “Welcome to the Joes.”

Shockwave
Task Force Omega File 112-00 – J.O.E. Clearance Level 1 - Eyes Only File Transcribed: Catwalk 04/05/08 04:30 hrs File Created: Gen. Joseph Colton Operatives: Flint Roadblock Intelligence: Pysche-Out Breaker 112-01 Objective: Recruitment of Jason A. Faria 112-02 Filename: Jason A Faria Callsign: Shockwave D/O/B: XX/XX/XX P/O/B: Dearborn, Michigan Paygrade: E-5 112-03 No Command Center On-Mission Report filed. 112-04 On-Mission Report: Flint, OiC Detroit, 04/04/08, 02:36 hrs Jason Faria noticed the two men as soon as he turned the corner. The street was busy but years on the Detroit SWAT team had taught Jason how to spot potential trouble, and those two looked like they could be potential trouble. One was a white guy, black hair, leaning against a street light. The other was a mountain of a man, big and black, head and shoulders above the other, twice as wide, all muscle. He was standing with his arms crossed, looking across the street. The white guy looked right at Jason, nudged the big guy, and the two of them stepped away from the street and into Jason’s path. These men are pros, was the first thought Jason had, as the two of them positioned themselves to block Jason’s forward progress but neither was directly in front of him, they were spread to the sides such that if Jason attacked one he’d leave himself exposed to the other. Jason stopped in front of them, taking his hands out of his pocket, palming the small inch long retractable knife he kept on himself at all times. “Can I help you?” Jason asked looking each of them in the eyes as he spoke, which was hard on the big guy being as tall as he was. “Depends,” the big guy said. He didn’t have as deep a voice as Jason figured he would. It had a friendly quality to it. “Are you Jason Faria,” the white guy asked. “Depends,” Jason said cracking a slight smile. Two could play this game. “Who are you?” “Dash..Flint,” the white guy and pointed to the big guy. “That there is Roadblock. Say hello to the man Roadblock.” “Afternoon Officer, we’re here to see if you’ll grant us a boon.” The one called Roadblock smiled and winked at Jason. The one called Flint rolled his eyes and sighed. “Don’t mind ‘Block, he only rarely does that. Usually only when he wants to annoy me.” “So you know who I am obviously,” Jason said. He didn’t like where this was going. Who were these men. “You really haven’t told me who you are, just some fancy sounding names.” Jason took a couple steps back and moved to the side, more in front of the white guy, named Flint. The two men watched him and didn’t react, Jason knew they knew what he was doing, putting himself in a better position to fight back if it came to that. Neither of them moved. They either had more confidence in their abilities over his, or they were letting him know they weren’t going to cause trouble. “We’re here with a job offer for you,” Flint said. “I already have a job,” Jason countered. “True, with Detroit SWAT, we’re you’re the most decorated officer in decades, as well as the youngest to reach that distinction,” Flint stated. “Why’d you leave the Rangers for SWAT?” “Seem to know a lot about me,” Jason started “You guys military?” “In a way,” Roadblock said. Jason looked the two over more closely. They were definitely professionals, but had the rigidity that only came with being military personal. The one called Flint had more of an operator feel then the big guy did, that one was strictly Army. “Rangers?,” Jason asked. Both of them nodded their heads. “Rangers lead the way,” Roadblock said smiling. “You said ‘in a way’, so which is it? Rangers or not,” Jason said. “Wait, you’re freelancers right? Like those Blackwater jokers? Hell no.. I’m not going for any of that crap.” Jason started to back up. “Hold up a second,” Flint said raising his hands to try and placate Jason. “The Unit we’re in eats those Blackwater pussies for breakfast. We’re still Government Issued. Real American Heroes thru and thru.” Jason was starting to get confused. What was going on? “Guy in our unit, real wiz with the brain, used to be 4th Psy-Ops out of Bragg, he figures you did your stint in the Rangers, real good stint to,” Roadblock started. “Read your file. Some good ops,” Flint added. “So this guy, he thinks you joined to get the training. Old Police family for generations, so you follow in the footsteps but you want SWAT and want to be the best of the best, get the training to really make a difference. So you join the Rangers, do your stint, and come back and SWAT it,” Roadblock laughed at his own joke. “SWAT it, god that’s funny.” “Not really ‘Block,” Flint said again rolling his eyes. “Look Jason, ignore him, it’s for the best sometimes.” Behind him Roadblock flashed a huge smile. “We know all about you. Our guy does his homework. You’re a Do-Gooder Jason. Want to try to make the world a bigger place. Or at least your neck of the woods,” Flint gestures to the city of Detroit around him. “But you’re not looking at the bigger picture.” “And what picture is that?” Jason was getting intrigued now but he definitely didn’t like someone somewhere he’d never met knowing so much about him and thinking he knew him. “The world’s going to shit,” Flint said. “You’ve seen the news. All those terrorist groups, suicide bombings, all that crap. That’s just the tip of the iceberg. What you don’t see in the news, that’s the bigger picture.” “what do you mean?” “Al Quada? They’re pansies compared to some of the groups out there. Sure they did a number on the Towers but don’t you wonder why there’s been nothing like it since? Reasons because they got help from one of the bigger players, the ones in the shadows that no one hears about on the daily news.” “If they’re so big, why aren’t they in the news taking credit?” Jason was genuinely interested now. Any terrorist groups he had heard of had always jumped at the chance to take credit and sprout the garbage about their gods and their missions and how the innocent lives that were taken were okay cause it was done for their cause. What bull, Jason thought. “They don’t want or need the credit,” Flint said. “These are the shadow players, the puppet masters. All those conspiracy nutjobs you hear about, they got it right.” “Except for the aliens,” Roadblock mentioned. “Except for the aliens,” Flint sighed. “These are the…” “Well there are those bugs in the himilayas. They’re pretty alien.” “Thanks ‘Block, I like to forget about those things.” “No problem m’man.” Now Jason was lost. “Okay, so I’ll accept that there are some bigger groups out there, what does that have to do with me?” “And that brings us full circle to why we’re here,” Flint said smiling. “These ‘Ultra-Terrorists’..” “We didn’t come up with that,” Roadblock said. “I hate that term.” “Me too, now can I continue?” Flint asked and Roadblock motioned ‘go ahead’ smiling the whole time. “These UTs, they have technology and training miles beyond what the normal Spec Ops are geared and trained for. The Rangers, Delta and DevGru, as good as they are, they can’t handle the UTs. That’s where we come in, and hopefully you.” “And who exactly is ‘we’?” “We’re the Joes” Roadblock said proudly. 122-05 After Mission Briefing: Flint, OiC Met Jason Faria in the field, city of Detroit, and gave him the spiel, what Breaker calls the “quick sell”. Once he got past his initial mistrust and skepticism, we brought him back to the Hotel where Pysche-Out and Breaker gave him the “long sell”. As Pysche-Out predicted, Faria accepted the offer and was brought back to the PIT that night. Was initially reluctant when found out he had to “die” but was convinced of the necessity. I hear the Detroit PD is having the funeral early next week, parade and everything. I thought only Boston PD went that all out. (Colton’s edit: take out the personal commentary, note to self: speak to Flint again) 122-06 J.O.E. Commander Report: Gen. Colton Shockwave will make a good addition to the Unit. Clancy will love having a Ranger/SWAT Trained member in his Domestic Operations core. Shockwave’s a patriot, thru and thru. Dedicated to standing up for the little guy and trying to make a difference in the world. Not a bad singing voice either.

Just kidding. Looks great so far! As for a replacement name for super-terrorists....I got nothing. Look forward to the continued adventures. (This forum really needs a Fan Fic section *wink, wink, nudge, nudge*) |

Interesting work with Mangler. Do I sense a similarity to IDW's 'death' of joes before they join the team or was that a simple coincidence?

Nope, it's there on purpose. I'm trying to incorporate as much as I can of the various takes on Joe thru the years, at least the stuff I like. Hope people caught some of the nods to other things during the conversations.

I admit, I wasn't looking for them, but that one stood out. I'll have to go back and re-read them knowing they're there.
