File #403 – First Session Debriefing of Mercer Debriefer: Captain Psyche-Out, Executive of Psychological Operations Transcribed: Qwerty CC: Gen. Colton, Agent Clancy, Gen. Flagg, Gen. Hawk, WO2 Flint, Agent Norseman Classified: Level 4, Eyes Only [Psyche-Out = P-O; Mercer = M] Location: The Camp Time: start: 14:30 P-O: Start recording. Captain Psyche-Out, first session with operative Mercer. Time is 14:28. P-O: Time is 14:30. Subject is late. P-O: Time is 14:33. Check security cameras of the hallway. See where subject is. [Security camera footage has Mercer arriving at 14:29 and waiting outside the door until 14:35.] [Knock on door] P-O: Enter. P-O: Good afternoon Mercer. Have a seat. My name is Captain Psyche-Out. M: Psyche-Out? You’re Psy-Ops? P-O: No, I’m a member of the Joe team, as are you. M: Before that? P-O: Classified. M: Psy-Ops. Why am I here? P-O: Why am I here…. [pausing] M: Why am I here SIR? P-O: For your debriefing of course. M: Didn’t Chuckles and Jinx already do that. P-O: No. Now let us begin. Note, time is 14:40. You were a Viper correct? M: Yes. P-O: For how long? M: Two years. P-O: Two years as a Viper or two years as a Cobra? M: Total. As a Cobra. P-O: How long were you a.. what is the term? Blueshirt? M: Six months. P-O: Why the quick advancement? M: Those with prior military training advance quickly. Those that are more skilled, say former SOCOM, go even quicker. But I already told Chuckles that. P-O: Did you have a name? M: What? P-O: We know of some Cobra operatives that have code-names, or callsigns as we call them here. Boomslang. Komodo. Steel Snake. Wild Weasel. M: No. I didn’t have a name. P-O: Why not? M: Wasn’t that high up in the hierarchy. P-O: What were you called? M: What do you mean? P-O: What did your fellow Vipers call you? What did your superior officers call you? M: My FORMER fellow Vipers called me Stratton, or depending on how close I was with them, Felix. As for my superiors, I was Sergeant Stratton. P-O: So they had an equivalent ranking structure? M: Equivalent to the US military? Yes. It was the US structure, Army, Navy and Air Force. No Marine equivalent. It sometimes took the foreign guys more adjustment time. P-O: Interesting. That seems to match our intelligence. M: Then why’d you ask if you already knew. P-O: Confirmation. M: I have a question for you. P-O: Oh? And it is? M: What is the real name of this unit? P-O: You are a member. You should know. M: I’ve heard about a dozen different ones. P-O: True. All right. The official name of the unit is Taskforce: Omega. The callsign is the Joint Operations Entity, or J.O.E. M: And the men call themselves Joes? I get it. What’s the G.I. stand for? P-O: It’s basetalk. A little joke that some of the first members came up with. It stands for Government Issued. M: Makes sense. P-O: Since you brought up the unit. How are you adjusting? M: To life here or to not being a Cobra anymore? P-O: Both. M: Life here reminds me of my days with the Marines. P-O: So you do not like it? M: No. I like it just fine. What did you mean? P-O: Your file indicated that you didn’t like your time in the Marines. M: Oh yeah, forgot about that. Seems so long ago. It’s not the same. Maybe my experiences have changed me. Maybe it’s the looser structure here. Maybe it’s having a tangible goal that my time and energy are being used for. P-O: Define tangible goal. M: I’ve seen firsthand how bad Cobra is. I know the Marines do good, don’t get me wrong. But I think here I’m doing real good. Does that make sense? P-O: Yes it does. P-O: Did you ever meet anyone called the Baroness, Doctor Mindbender or Black-Out? M: I’ve met Black-Out. That is a man that believes. P-O: Explain. M: From the way I understand it, he’s Cobra Commander’s right hand man. He’s personal soldier. The big man wants something done, Black-Out will do it without question. P-O: Anything? M: From the stories I’ve heard. Pretty much. I don’t know what made him such a believer, but he is. P-O: We may get back to that. For now I want to hear what a typical Cobra operation is. M: Huh? P-O: Put it this way. I want to hear about a day in the life of Cobra Viper Felix Stratton.

Don't entirely agree with the blueshirt --> Viper thing, but the debriefing/interview is an excellent way to introduce Mercer and set-up a flashback sequence without making the exposition look obvious or forced. Great stuff.

I've just never seen the Vipers as being the lowest of the low, like the filecard says, I've alway thought of them as Cobra's Special Forces.

The Search pt 3
“Out now,” Belvoir said as soon as he saw the body lying on the bed. “What did you touch?” “What,” Honda Lou replied in shock. She had not been expecting a body. Instincts, honed by years as a US Marshal, kicked in. “Bedroom, bathroom and entry door knobs,” she replied regaining her composure. “What’s going on,” the voice of Taser came over the radio. “Hold on,” Belvoir replied. “We’re fine. Assessing situation now.” “Got you marked,” Alley Way’s voice said over the radio. “No movement in other room.” Honda Lou stepped back into the living room, looking out the windows and seeing Alley Way and Bulletproof on the rooftop across the street, neither had a gun visible, but both were looking intently at her location. Belvoir stepped into the room, looking down at the carpet and seeing if his steps were leaving an impression. Thank god for cheap carpeting, he thought not seeing any markings that could be used to make a shoe impression. He walked around the room looking at everything, then stopped and looked down at the body. He moved around, examining it without touching it from all sides. Lying next to the body was a bottle of over the counter sleeping pills, open with some spelling out onto the bed. “Wish I had brought a camera,” he said, mostly to himself. “Want me to go get one?,” Honda Lou asked. “What,” Belvoir asked not realizing she had heard him. “Oh, no, not that important.” He stood up and went over to the closet. He reached into the pocket of the civilian jacket he was wearing and pulled out a pair of gloves. He put the gloves on and opened the closet door. He gave it a quick look over, being careful not to touch anything except by the back of the hand. He closed the bi-fold doors and walked around the room, again stopping at the body. “Control,” he said knowing he’d be picked up over the receiver. “What are the stats on Rey?” “Blond, blue eyed, six foot three, estimated at around one fifty in weight, late 20s,” came Taser’s reply in a tone that was obvious he was reading straight from a file. “What’s the situation?” “We have a body,” Honda Lou replied. “Appears to be Rey.” “Confirm that it’s Rey,” Taser said. “Working on it,” Honda Lou said. “It’s not Rey,” Belvoir said stepping back. “Close but not quite.” “How can you tell?,” Honda Lou asked. “Wrong height, weight and age,” Belvoir said stepping back. He looked around the room and then looked at Honda Lou. “Find a towel or cloth that you can grab without disturbing or touching anything else.” “Right,” She said looking around the room and heading towards the bathroom. “The stats we had could be estimates,” Bulletproof’s voice said over the radio. “I’d say the accuracy is about 90%,” Taser’s voice said. “The intel boys hacked ‘em out of the universities database. Odd thing was there was no primary doctor and no driver’s license.” “Even if the stats are off,” Belvoir said. “I’m positive this is staged.” “For who’s benefit,” Taser asked. “Ours,” Belvoir said walking out of the room and watching Honda Lou wiping the bathroom door knob with a hand towel she had found. “Someone wanted us to think Rey had killed himself.” *************** The man listened to the people in the room talking. They hadn’t mentioned any names over the open line or even casually mentioned where they were from. The listening device, attached and hiding under the couch in the living room was good enough to pick up all the talking in the room. It was obvious the two, a woman and an older man, were talking to someone else. For the hundredth time since they had entered the man wished he had been able to put a camera in place. But the time frame hadn’t allowed it. When these two had showed up at the University, asking after a Philip Rey, his people had been contacted and he had been sent to lay the false trail. Without a large head start he had had to improvise. Finding someone that was so close to Rey was a stroke of sheer luck. The original plan had called for him to vandalize the room and make it look as if Rey had been taken as well as their agent. After all, the man that Rey had captured, he had to have come from the same place these people had. In the man’s world, there was no such thing as coincidence. These people showing up so soon after that man, Booker, had approached Rey wasn’t just chance. What to do now, the man thought. He had to get a look at the two people, so his people would be able to track them through the databases and find out where and who these people worked for. Then they could formulate a better and more solid plan. Walking out of the apartment he had taken over, it’s occupants laying dead in the living room, the man headed for the stairwell. He made no sound as he quickly ran up the stairs and to the roof. He was surprised when he got to the top of the stairs heading to the roof and saw that the doors locked had been forced open. Cautiously, pulling a long sword from its sheath on his back, he turned the knob and pushed the door open, walking onto the roof. The door gave no sound as he slowly opened it. He made no sound as he stepped onto the gravel top of the roof. He looked around, orientating himself, knowing the building with Rey’s apartment was behind him. He turned and walked around the walls of the stairwell that came above the roof and stopped short seeing two men at the edge of the roof, crouched behind the parapet and looking across the street at the same building and same apartment he was heading for. So the two in the apartment had watchers. He should have expected that. Gun or sword, he thought to himself, creeping silently towards the occupied men. ************* Belvoir was in the kitchen looking around as Honda Lou finished up wiping away any indication of their presence in the apartment. He had opened the fridge, finding more proof that this was not a place that Rey actually spent much time in, the fridge was empty. He reached up and opened a cabinet, grasping the knob between fingers, leaving no prints, and wasn’t surprised by what he saw. Very well stocked with a lot of can goods, nothing perishable, and too neatly arranged for a space that someone lived in. No one’s cabinets were ever completely organized and neat. Why would anyone want them to think that Rey had committed suicide, he thought to himself walking out of the kitchen and into the living room, heading towards the windows. Rey obviously didn’t truly live in this apartment, so where did he live? Where had he disappeared to and why had he taken Booker with him, or killed Booker and disposed of the body. This apartment was a dead end. Sighing, fearing he was overlooking something and that would lead to Booker’s death, of him failing a teammate he stood in front of the windows and looked across the street. He could see Bulletproof and Alleyway and behind them… “Alleyway,” he shouted realizing what was happening. “Behind you!!”

Almost caught up now.
The Atoll is incredible work Troy! Probably my favorite story ATM. In all your stories you really have great descriptions of people and places, and I commend you on that. Took a brief diversion on my catch-up to read the Mercer debriefing. Very true to character. |

The Atoll is the one I'm having the hardest time writing actually. It's hard to come up with a good way to describe a firefight.

You haven't shown the Atoll from the Vipers perspective? Just kidding. I have no writiing skills so how to move it along is beyond me. It will probably have to be long one. You can only show one person's perspective at a time, so whose point of view to use? Bulldog, Gung-Ho's, Grunt, Sgt Stone? Maybe a little of each team leader.

Yeah, trying to get the story from the 4 different groups, different POV each time. Next chapter (probably tonights, I want to try to get two out, I have two interconnected stories from two different POVs that want to get out, but have to get the Search finished in order to do so) of the Atoll will probably be Grid-Iron and his team, then one of Sundown and those that remained to guard the landing craft.
