Loive your stuff, Troy! Just one question. (DO)n't care if you start writing in relationships or what not, but am really interested in your take on Scarlett. The suspense..the drama!..

I'll get to that stuff someday. Read some of the newer things and you should be able to find who I think Scarlett should be with.

The Atoll pt 2
“What the hell made these?,” Torpedo asked. “Beats me skip,” Windtalker replied taking out his imager and taking pictures and video. They had been making their way thru the jungle since the beach landing, four hours ago. It was slow going. They had no idea of the island’s defense and security. Day had broken an hour before and that had slowed the progress down considerably. They were on no set time limit, but they also didn’t have forever either. The target was the buildings on the island’s west side, about two miles in from the water. The island was about ten miles long, the fairly good sized lagoon nearly dead center, surrounded by jungle and a narrow strip of beach that ringed the entire island. The plan had been to land further north and come around west through the jungle where they would be harder to spot. Leatherneck, on point, had called a stop a couple minutes previously. The jungle ahead of them was flattened, the trees removed and not cleanly, small stumps and roots filled the wide path. What had gotten their attention was the set of wide tracks in the path. Two sets of tracks, looking like tank treads, but wider then normal, almost twice as wide if not more. Spaced fairly close together, not as wide as a normal tank. The length couldn’t be determined as they were straight and continuous. The path, almost a road, went from the beach and headed almost directly towards the center of the island. “Tanks?,” Waverunner asked. “I’m no expert, but that doesn’t look right.” “It’s not,” Leatherneck said. “Treads are too wide and not far enough apart.” “What do we do?,” Rampart asked. “Follow the tracks or head to the objective.” Torpedo bent down and ran his fingers over the tracks, looking one way and then the other, deeper into the jungle. “It’s a research lab,” he said finally, standing up. “Stands to reason they’d have defenses. Keep your eyes on target and your ears open. Move out.” “Yo,” Leatherneck said taking the point. ******** “Guess we know what made the tracks,” Wet-Suit said sarcastically. They were spread out on the jungle’s edge, keeping back under the canopy, on the north side of the collection of buildings. Three good-size low buildings filled a clearing, space was made around each building between walls and jungle, too much open ground. A tall guard tower rose up from the middle of the three buildings, lights could be seen on the railing, as well as guards patrolling. Two paths could be seen leading out of the clearing, one heading to the beach, one heading deeper into the middle of the island. What had caught the unit’s attention were the two large black vehicles parked near the island path. Black and tall, twice as tall as a tank, the vehicles were short and wide. The tracks weren’t high at the back but extended to twice the height at the front of the vehicles, and angled back down from the high point. The steel sidewalls were angled, not steep, but enough to help deflect blasts. The driver’s station, no canopy visible, just steel, was elevated above the ground, the steel sloping away towards the ground, extended out from where the high point of the tracks were. Mounted under the station was what looked like a double barreled chain fed machine gun weapons system. On top of the tank was a weapons turret. Another chain fed gun, higher caliber, and with a long barrel coming out of the rotating top. Bars along the back and a thin platform along the bottom, provided room for passengers to ride. “That thing is bad-ass,” Leatherneck exclaimed. “No kidding, “ Rampart added. “That thing looks like it’d take a hit and keep coming.” “Eyes focused,” Torpedo said. “The buildings are the target. Windtalker, get plenty of pictures.” “Using up film,” Windtalker replied. “Confirmed Blueshirts in the tower.” “Confirmed,” Torpedo said using his binoculars to look at the tower. “I count three. I see a long barrel. Possible sniper.” “Where’s the power?,” Waverunner asked. “What do you mean,” Wet-Suit said, like the others keeping his voice low. “Hold on, guard.” They all went quiet as a group of three Cobra Blueshirts walked by between them and the buildings. The guards weren’t paying much attention, so far the recon unit’s presence hadn’t been noticed. “There’s a generator over there,” Wet-Suit said as soon as he felt safe talking again. “They have power.” “Yeah,” Waverunner replied frowning, something wasn’t looking right. “But that’s not a big generator. Looks big enough to power just the buildings and the tower. What kind of research doesn’t require power?” “Buildings don’t look right either,” Leatherneck added, pointing out the features. “Those look pretty quickly put together. No louvers on the walls, no vents on the roof. Not that tall.” “Like barracks,” Rampart said watching the guards as they neared the two black tanks. “This doesn’t look like any research facility I’ve ever seen. Question. Why didn’t that path into the jungle or the other we found show up on the map? It has that one going from the beach but not the others.” “Sure as hell didn’t have any tanks on it either,” Wet-Suit grumbled. “Sats can’t get a clear view of the island,” Torpedo replied, using the binoculars to look at the various buildings. “The map image we got was from four or five months ago. Island became a dead spot to the Eyes.” “And that got our attention,” Windtalker added. “I don’t like this Torp.” “Me either,” Torpedo said putting the binoculars away and moving back deeper into the jungle. “Let’s circle the complex, get some more images and then find out where that path goes.” ********* It was almost eight hours later, by Windtalker’s reckoning, that they got to the end of the path. Growing up on the Navajo reservation, he’d gotten a good sense of time by the sun’s position. It had been a long and slow crawl through the jungle, staying just within sight of the path, but under the jungle’s cover. Twice they had had to stop to avoid roving patrols in the jungle, the first had been encountered when they had gone two miles from the camp, almost at the center, security was increasing the closer they got. Once they had heard one of the mysterious tanks moving down the path and had gotten a sight of it. It was fast. Very fast. Another time they had heard the sounds of a couple of the tanks further away, another path. Finally they had gotten to the end. A large clearing opened up before them, four or five of the rough paths entered the clearing. The lagoon was on the south side, shallow but a dock had been built, a flat bottomed barge tied up at it. The barge had no markings and was painted black. Waverunner had mentioned, in a whisper, that the barge couldn’t go far away from shore or the waves would capsize it, but it was perfect for unloading offshore and bringing into the shallow lagoon. The clearing was roughly two football fields wide, completely devoid of trees and vegetation and had been dug out, about twenty feet down, fairly steep slope with dirt ramps, it started to slope about twenty feet from the treeline. Men, blueshirts mostly, but some that looked to be in gray work coveralls, walked throughout the clearing. They watched a couple of the tanks enter from the east side and go down the dirt ramps. A couple of jeeps, roughly the size of humvees, but with additional armor plating at the doors and roof, with a roof mounted weapons system, were parked off to the side, the drivers in grayish uniforms that matched the Blueshirts standing by them. Tall poles lined the top of the slope, with guide wires leading down, holding them in place. Taller ones ringed the lower clearing. The poles supported a lightweight camo netting that covered the entirety of the clearing, the holes in the net letting the sun light into the space. What was in the middle of the clearing commanded the recon units attention, Windtalker looking the entire thing over with the imager. Large and circular, probably two hundred feet in diameter. Steel panels. The object rose to tree top level, probably close to forty or fifty feet high. The top appeared to be open, men could be seen walking it’s perimeter, disappearing and reappearing from behind the large plates that looked attached to the walls and rose above the top of the roof, forming some kind of crenellated rampart. Workers could be seen with welding equipment at various points. There were numerous openings in the panels, windows or areas for weapons systems. A couple of larger openings were along the bottom, one of them open revealing a garage that housed two of the black tanks. “Windtalker,” Torpedo said, breaking the stunned silence. “Call the Platform. Transmit the data. Tell them to go hot.”

Nice job again Troy.
A very nice description of the terrodrome. (or is it A terrordrome?) Is there one (like the cartoons) or multiples (like the comics), or are you not ready to tell us yet? |

Have to wait and see what's up with the terrordrome. Surprised no comments on the other stuff "discovered" in that story. :(

Yep
I worked hard trying to do a good description of a HISS. Tried for a cross between vintage and resolute.
