My question is this:
Has anyone asked Hasbro - either by convention or monthly inquiry or whatever - what impact this form of theft has on their profits? I mean, most retailers have a terribly liberal and ignorant return policy, which is usually because they don't want to lose the repeat business of moms who want to return a baby rocker or something... heck, Idon't know why these repacker people go through the trouble - when I worked at TRU, I'd see parents return toy boxes torn open! It's likely that Hasbro can't make demands of the retailers to adapt their policy (how often have we heard that they didn't go ahead with a planned toy because it wouldnt sell at Walmart or added sounds and lights because Target wouldnt carry it otherwise?) I would imagine that in the proportion that it occurs, repacking may not be as troublesome to them as it is to us. We've seen the news spots that Hasbro's GI Joe sales aren't poor (quaterly sales reports and what not since ROC) so it's likely a matter of acceptable loss to Hasbro. Things will probably never change, to the point that you could take a bunch of screws and put them in the bubble and return it, if only because there aren't enough people doing it to make Hasbro go "Hey... some guy returned Crimson Guard with a handful of washers in it." Tom

Know how I know this? Because you posted a declassified flyer which was meant for fun as a NEWS ITEM. No one would ever tell you anything because the VERY FIRST THING you would do is post it here. Probably incorrectly. |

Tom I don't know about now, but about 15 years ago I found out that we (( as consumers)) paid about $250 a year 'more' than we would have to pay on items, to cover shop lifting and damage and stuff that happens to stuff. It's "built in" to the items you buy. Maybe your Gi Joes would be $4.90 instead of $5 each... the tv you buy might be $20 less, ect ect ect... I remember it clearly. I was a teenager at the time, and I was offended.... so for about 3 years, my friends and I WOULD shop lift a few 100 in stuff to 'balance the scales. lol. our logic was "if we're getting charged for it, we want our crap" That was when I was 15 or 16 (( and It wasn't Joes I shoplifted, it was bbooks. lol)) but yeah. So.. inflate that by a decade and a half... You're probably paying out $400 a year or so, for shoplifters and repackers and such. So.. yeah. Such things as repackers, shop lifters and stuff are already factored into your items. The company covers it's butt far more than yours and will get their money.

Is it too much to ask that Hasbro provide reference images to retailers to compare returned merchandise? Or that the retailers realize this happens and refer to an on shelf product. Shit, what if it was one of us at the return counter, could we challenge the return or is it store policy to just take it back?

Yeah, I have to vote for "they don't care". The job sucks, and they just want the people through and out. If it says 5 figures and there are 5 figures in there, thank you drive through.
I would probably have bought that Tomax re-pack. A business suit? That sounds kind of awesome. |

No one said it yet??? "Anthony the repacker did it!"
But seriously, it is a low-down thing to do but most of them know they are scumbags and stay out of the limelight. A few of them hard up for cash try and sell the crap they repack on eBay when the stores won't return their items, then claim they are victims and they were taken advantage of. |
