In my limited time on this forum I've noticed something. There are two types of posters. Column one, in which I probably belong, wants figures to be released in somewhat comparison to what they remember vintage style. Column two, which I also appreciate, are more open to new interpretations of a figure.
These two factions feel passionately enough on their respected stances to bicker back and forth endlessly. After participating in some of this bickering I sat back and thought. As I said, I probably belong to the first group, however, I also like new uniforms and reinterpretation...to a certain extent. So, I thought, what makes a "character" a "character". Uniform? Gender? Ethnicity? Bio? Skills? Name? Past cannon? What makes Hamlet Hamlet? What makes Scooby Doo Scooby Doo.? What makes Snake Eyes Snake Eyes? Star Wars would not take Darth Vader and suddenly rewrite the script to make him a dwarf ninja. Yet, Megatron can go from gun to dragon to tank to whatever. At what point is it defined? When is it ok and how much change is ok? Arguments can go both ways on this one. Can we imagine a world with Charlie Brown as a self assured skater kid? Can we imagine a world with Rudolf the red nose reindeer as having a blue and white LED collar instead of a red nose? Can we imagine a world with Spiderman wearing a suit made by Tony Stark instead of traditional blue/black? Can we imagine a world with Indiana Jones sans whip and fedora? Can we imagine a world where Doc is a female? Can we imagine a world where the Punisher refuses to kill? Can we imagine a world where Snake Eyes talks? Some of these may have been done and some not but where is the line. How far can a character be changed until it really is not the character anymore. How important must a character be until change is not acceptable? How unimportant must a character be until any and all change is? Does one of these changes seem more right or wrong than another? Is there a defining line between what is taboo and what is not? Is it based on creative license or public consensus? The answer to this is really up to every individual. I suppose some will say the creator (or in the case of some properties) whoever holds the license on the character defines this. But, at what point does the general public make any changes null and void. In the gi joe verse, we have two factions currently. Those who think the changes are void, and those who believe whomever is at the helm calls the shots. No one is really wrong I guess as it is all opinion. I'm not sure I really answer anything to myself here, but it's a topic of discussion. Feel free to add. |

i agree with what you say, i personally wanst a fan of the new gi joe until i saw gi joe resolute. Personally i feel like it targets my age more and it feels like it hits me at home. I was never a big fan of sigma 6 and the new movie...i think alot of people like the old joes because it takes them back to their youth

Thanks for the reply. I think for me as well I like the link to my youth.
To be clear though, I'm not trying to prove a point here, though my bias in joe verse may be displayed. My intention is to honestly ask how much change is acceptable in a character/intellectual property till it no longer reflects or is said character/property. This does not only apply to gi joe but all fictional works. I'm curious in what people think. |

Well, Darth Vader is cool because he's Darth Vader. Megatron's thing is that he transforms, what he transforms into doesn't matter because we know he's still going to able to blow shit up, lol. If they changed it so that Megs DIDN'T transform into anything at all, and still called him a transformer, then that's kind of ridiculous.
You can make Vader a midget-ninja (Yoda?), but then it's hard to believe this little creature is capable of causing so much fear and death. But then again, there are people who are afraid of tiny little bugs, so what do I know. |

This is a brilliant and very relevant question. One which I cannot answer without considerable thought, I will return to this thread when I have an answer that accurately expresses my thoughts.

Every character is different: 1st that comes to mind is the Punisher (thanx DrNightmare) the Punisher IS the skull; the black hair, the guns...Superman without the red yellow and blue suit is just, well..a superhuman man get it? when it comes to Gijoe, I like a lot of the ROC stuff, I just like the old stuff BETTER.That new 5 pack, with Repeater,Dialtone, Footloose, Law and Order and Zartan? UGH ... NOTHING like the original except the damn DOG.
To me, Repeater is all about the hip mounted gun...plus hes white, not Mulatto. Footloose is dressed in GREEN camo...Dial Tones a MAN, but is it HAS to be a girl, make a new sculpted head....Law and Order? Law is the while helmet, red shirt , vested MP...

To me whoever is telling the story is in charge of who the character is (be that 1 person or a board of directors) and as long as I enjoy the story being told or the product being sold I really don't care what changes are made to any given property. I'm a life long Legion of Super Heroes fan, so I've been living with character revamps for 30+ years. At the end of the day I really don't care if Kirk was born in Iowa or in space, if the the Force is nothing more than a virus, or if RipCord is black or white... And if something is changed so drastically that I can no longer recognize it for what I know it as (i.e. dwarf ninja Darth Vader) I'll try accept it for what it's become and what that new role is IF I'm enjoying the new story, or just say "F-it" and move on if I'm not, because it's all just make-believe anyways, and I have way too many real-life things to be concerned with to get upset about the make-believe stuff.

I read that in China it's illegal(spelling) for Rudolph to have the red nose so they use blue. I can't remember where I saw this. As for what makes a character a character, I think the character has to keep some of the same story kinda like Superman. He's always Kryptonian, found by the Kents, grew up in Smallville, lives in Metropilis, has Lex as his main villan, has Lois in his Life(I can't remember if she marries SM in all of the versions) and always has the same basic powers. Even SM powers did change because he didn't always fly. But Pre Crisis, Post Crisis, Donnerverse, S:TAS and Smallville are all Superman. Some of the changes in the stories might not be great. But some of the changes have been for the better also in my opinion
