I can skirt over all the drama by implementing what I learned from Transformers....It's a different universe!
ROC stays with ROC because MARS hasn't punched a hole through time and space yet for ROC Ripcord, Dial Tone, Repeater, etc... to meet up with the ARAH Universe characters of those names or They're different characters but with the same code names (Yes, I've ignored many of the "real names" on the filecards) Dial Tone a girl? Sure, it's the real Dial-Tone's Sister, she just used her big brother's code name because he's out of Joes right now. Female Doc? Well that one was actually Doc's daughter on the filecard. Footloose? well that's Footloose, he's just in different clothes (Those fatigues can get smelly after 25 years or so ) |

It's like Marvel's Ultimate Line. In the main MU, Nick Fury is a WW2 vet and a white guy. In the Ultimate U, Nick Fury is a bad-ass black guy. Apply the same idea to ARAH and RoC.

As long as they change the file name to someone different, I could care less what the "code name" is. I like what DDP did: just called them "version 2". Doc's daughter being called "Doc" is a nice touch. I am certain in special forces circles as well as Air Force pilots, call signs and nicknames get reused often, particularly when they are cool or appropriate. My only issue is if two folks are on the same team at the same time with the same call sign. That would be very odd.

What makes a character is a combination of two things: the creator and the fan. It starts with the creator creating and distributing the (lets say in this instance a) toy with a name, story, and a brand. It is now in the hands of a collector or kid and the name and story can be the same but we change it sometimes. We create our own brand for this toy. So now we have 2 incarnations of the same figure.
This happens with art. What the artist intends and what the viewer sees are never going to be the same, therefore art is forever changing. I have no problem with Dial-Tone's lack of man bits or Repeater being darker. I bought them because I like the toys. Sure they aren't the classic ones I grew up with and in my mind they are different but I still like them. It's that simple, I like the toy so I bough it. |

I don't mind characters being updated for the sake of modernizing the said character's backstory or characteristics. I mean if hasbro would keep the same backstory for each character over the years they would be sitting around in a v.f.w. lounge sharing war stories lol. I say this purely in jest, but you get the idea. So I like the idea of getting an updated storyline along with new takes on classic characters to fit the modern times and to appeal to new and younger fans.

Character to me is someone I emotionally connect to and care to see what happens to them next.

The answer to this is really up to every individual.
But, at what point does the general public make any changes null and void. In the gi joe verse, we have two factions currently. Those who think the changes are void, and those who believe whomever is at the helm calls the shots. No one is really wrong I guess as it is all opinion. I'm not sure I really answer anything to myself here, but it's a topic of discussion. Feel free to add. I used to get worked up over the direction Star Wars was taking with the prequels. Rant about the movies and their plots, the figures, the books, etc. Well, I realized that I was robbing myself of any satisfaction I used to get out of it. I love the original trilogy and I'll buy figures from those movies and maybe from the rare book that I liked, but I pass on anything that I don't like. It was a really refreshing and satisfying feeling when I walked into the toy aisle and, for the first time in my life, didn't recognize or know the name of every Star Wars character I saw on the pegs. I just don't like the way the RoC figures DO NOT fit in with the 25th figures. They're too realistic. Someone did a custom Crazylegs figure (the member's name escapes me, so my apologies) and it looks great, with the exception of that RoC head. In the pictures there are 25th-style figures behind it and they look nothing alike. I'm thrilled for everyone who is overjoyed with the RoC line and the direction the sculpting is taking. I'm cool with walking into the toy aisle and not finding something I want. I'm not 5 anymore. If there's nothing in the ailse that interests me, I don't find something to buy or convince myself that I like what's there. I went and saw the movie in the theater. I did not care for it, much like many people here didn't. I'm not going to buy it on DVD and I'm not going to support the toy line unless I find something that fits in with what I want my collection to be. So, while I don't like the line or I don't understand the kubrick or super-deformed or little tikes looking figures, I don't begrudge anyone the satisfaction they find in buying them. |

Usually readers/viewers learn to love characters based on the trials or situations set before them and how they handle resolve those conflicts. In the case of GI*Joe, there are so many characters, and God bless Larry Hama for doing the best he could, there are really only a dozen or so characters that were (have) been used again and again and through those adventures we have come to recognize certain characters in or out of uniform. Now the rest of the Joe team who didn’t have this luxury, they had (have) a file card, a uniform and a child’s imagination to develop them into a recognizable character. And as a result, I think the uniform often times became synonymous with the character. So changing a character’s uniform takes away that instant recognizability. Sure, many characters have undergone make-overs with new uniforms, just as Superman and Batman have. But I tend to think that most people associate Joe characters, who were not fleshed out in comics or cartoons, with their first uniform.
Hasbro, to their credit, has been ahead of the curve on incorporating women and other minorities into the Joe team. Often times, this was an important part of the character – think of how different GI*Joe would be if Scarlett was a man, or Spirit was from India and not a Native American. But in the case of Repeater, there has been nothing (to my knowledge) that identifies him as belonging to one ethnicity or another. But the same principles apply to arbitrary changes in gender and race – it’s change for the sake of unnecessary change, and it takes away from the recognizability of a character. So when a company decides to update and revamp some beloved, but quite frankly 2nd or 3rd tier, character you hear the “you’re raping my childhood” outcry from fans of that character. This all sort of ties into the reason I deplore the new paper-thin file cards (I mean content here, not construction) that come with the new RoC figures. It took away one of the best tools they had into creating a character with some amount of depth complete with a hometown and personality quirks which, in my mind, has separated GI*Joe from other generic, toy soldiers. |
