A little of both. GI Joe has a Military feel but a Sci Fi twist.

I think it's about 70% military and 30% sci-fi.
Hell Larry Hama would call up military experts to help with the file cards and the comic. The Hasbro toy designers would go to military bases and do research for the toys. Anybody saying G.I.Joe is 100% or mostly sci-fi don't know what there talking about. |

I think GI Joe is better if it is portrayed as a state of the art Military organization existing in a world containing some aspects of science fiction.

That's one of the reasons I don't mind the concept of the accl suits. If Cobra has Snake Armor, BATs, pulse cannons, and horrific experiments in creating super-soldiers, the Joes would need something to field that can counter it in a pinch, even if it was too expensive and complex to equip every soldier with, they're simply trying to keep up and ahead where possible. BTW: It is possible to mix the two to far greater degrees than even the cartoon or comic did. Battlestar Galactica is a great example of having a military feel in a totally sci-fi universe. The problem is that in the real world the US goes to extraordinary lengths to keep ahead of the technological curve. There's no way to believably have Cobra creating super-science weapons every week and have the Joes settle for M-4s. They're going to want to keep up, even if it's only in the more practical, less wacky stuff that doesn't violate every rule of the geneva convention and warsaw pact.

As far as straight tech goes, Nato, and the DoD put experimental weapons through gruelling tests to make sure it's reasonable safe for soldier use, and generally dependable. I think Cobra would say "F" it and just send some guys out into the field and run their own real world experiments. So ya lose a couple of troopers, or vipers along the way. Sacrifices must be made, ya know? -13 |

Well the idea of Serpentor is not just a "can do" but a should do. Cobra would always have the edge on tech and experiments because they don't have the moral code to know where the lines are. Could GI Joe found a away to make Serpentor? Maybe. I'm sure the subject may get touched on in RoC cannon. Cloning and Genetic Manipulation is a huge sci fi thing now. However, is it "right" to make a human life just for the sake of a weapon?
