you buy an item , collect it because you like it well thats my philosophy if its worth something then well done but Gi Joe will not set anyone up in retirement take them all out the boxes and play with them

As others have already stated the value of any collectible is based on what a particular collector is willing to spend on it at any given time. If you are in it for an investment, I would suggest not collecting GI Joes and Star Wars stuff because that stuff won't be in as high of demand in the future. Instead in the future Avatar or what ever is popular amongst the kids now is what will hold more value. Joes and stuff hold value currently because we as adults enjoyed having them as children, but when our children's generation become adults with families of their own, they will want to buy what was most dear to them as children. It's a cycle.
Thats kind of why Hasboro re-released the Joe line, in hopes that it will cycle down a generation. Unfortunately Joes and Star Wars, etc. aren't as popular with the youth, as they where with our generation. At least not in my area. So therefore if it is an investment, stick to what is currently popular and save that stuff for the next wave.

Some people on here have made killings selling things like Yellow Stalker, Best of 80s, and Pimp Daddy Destro. Had they invested their cash in real estate or the stock market instead, they would've lost their shirts.
Action figure collecting is one of those things in life that's a whole lot of fun, and can still be a good investment on the side.

No joke. That would save me between $700-1500 off of what I could get it for graded on ebay.

Either that was a ridiculous typo or you just aren't educated at all on what you speak of. Oh yeah and please link me to the auctions or sites that are selling storm shadow MIP for $30. oh wait you cant. Please figure out what you are trying to talk about before you start a thread.

ive never collected to make a profit or for an investment .. its always been becuase i love it , i love everything about it.. the hunt , the sneak previews of figures coming out , i could go on but to me its everything about collecting. i grew up in a collectors house my old man has a huge collection of antique automobile stuff so even at a young age i was collecting.. started collecting vintage star wars stuff at age 11. growing up seeing the fun my dad had no matter what was going on in my life and how bad it got the simple hunt of a joe or star wars figure blinded me to all the bad in life and i felt relief and simple like nothing else mattered.
my gf gives me a hard time about collecting , she just dosent get it and prob. never will but thats ok. i dont make a big deal about how much something is worth , i just make a big deal about how some people can charge sooo much money for something that will be worth nothing in a few years.. its the same people who hate on scalpers but in the end , thats exactly what some of them are doing

I collect to collect. Because it is fun and I like the stuff that I buy.
If some of it is worth something down the road... cool. For real investing, I have financial advisers that help make those decisions for things like 401k, mutual funds etc... The 2 should probably not be mixed. |

I don't know about others, but I collect MOC for the card art and don't really plan on selling them in the future.

Im a collector and have some things MIB but only cause the box looks cool with the toy in it. The thing is though none of these toys are gonna be worth anything down the road. The hard to find white coat rex will only be worth 10-20 bucks max. Even a 1984 mib storm shadow is only worth like 30 bucks and if it is graded a perfect maybe 200. You would need a lot of these guys to pay for your retirement or pay your kids way through college and the only way you would get what you hope of it is to come across a rich collector. My question is, why do some people including some on this board make a big deal of how much something is worth or will be when it really wont be?
