i don't collect with how much it will be worth in the near future ever in mind. i collect cause this is what i think the cool toys were in my lifetime and maybe some of my collection will get passed down from my kid to her kids to their kids cause that's when it will be really worth money

If you are after money, open up a savings account. These are toys, collect them play with them and enjoy them. Any future value is only a gamble at best.

If somebody can make a killing selling toys, good for them. I don't think it's a worth while avenue for making a living, but if they want to take the risk, it's their risk and has no negative affect on me. Now saying vintage MIB or MOC toys have no value is insane. Of course they have value, but that ship has sailed. Much like the 1990's killed comic book values, modern toy speculators have shifted the game from long term value to more of a "sell while it's hot!" market.

I know people who have tried to make a living re-selling stuff. This one tool back home opened up a comic shop and tried selling everything at eBay/Wizard/Toyfare/Buyer's Guide prices... in less than a year he was having a clearance sale and working a second job at Wal-Mart. Talk about a BAD investment. Funny story- back when Spy Troops/VvV was still big, I asked this same guy if he carried anything "GI Joe". He very rudely snorted and said "I don't carry anything that I have to compete with Wal-Mart on. I carry collectables for adults. You should check Toys R US or Wal-Mart for kids' toys". I ignored his statement, and asked if he had a Marvel Legends Deadpool. He showed me one with a $70.00 price tag and walked out. I went to Wal-Mart and found the freakin' Deadpool, brought it back and told him "Look what I found at Wal-Mart in the kid's section! It was only $12.00!" He kicked me out of his store forever. I know a few comic / collector's shop owners, and each of them has admitted they could have started a bar or something and made way more money, but it was their dream to open a collector shop since they were kids. I'm sure there are some people who just aren't that well informed on the modern toy re-sell market, and think they're going to replicate the days of old, but I think a lot of dealers just want to be around toys and are willing to struggle a bit in hopes of making it work.

Anything that is mass produced is a poor investment. They can always produce more, and particularly with figures, there might be no distinguishing between production rounds. Buy things because you like them and enjoy them. While there are some exceptions to this, the toys that consistently sell well on ebay are the ones everyone liked.

I played with the 12" figures when I was a kid (late 60's) and I had a son in 1988, so I decided to make sure there were GI Joes in his life.
I opened everything I bought until I found out about MOC.... and then the hobby got way to serious. The last straw was this year's convention set. I was talking myself into buying them, and how I NEEDED them in my collection. Now, that I passed on them, I am rethinking my collecting strategy. I have my favorite characters, and my favorite versions of those characters, and I will not strive for being a completist or about card/package condition. As soon as my grandkids are old enough, everything gets opened. There will be a GI Joe for them, even if Hasbro ends the line. When is all comes down to it, we all love these TOYS because they are so friggin cool. I do have a 1982 Grunt MOC that I scored for $20. It was worth it to me because of what he represents: the return of a toy that defined my childhood. Yo Joe |

I just got into collecting as an adult this past winter, so all my old toys are obviously loose, the 25th/ME style carded figures look so cool and remind me of my childhood so I have left them MOC to display that way but only one of each, the few I have gotten doubles of have been opened. All vehicles and all ROC have been opened because they don't have the nostalgia look.
