Sci-Fi has always been a part of G.I. Joe, from B.A.T.S. to Brainwave Scanners to Weather Dominators to Cloned Superwarriors to hidden societies of Snake-Men...
So how much of all that do you incorporate into your Joeverse? If you allow for Serpentor to be a cloned superwarrior, does that then open the door for genetically altered soldiers? Allow nanomites, just how far do you take them and what they can do? Allow the B.A.T.s do you allow things like M.A.S.S. or the B.E.T.? It's what I'm trying to define for my Joeverse right now. I was finally able to find a way to incorporate Serpentor and being a clone, and that allowed me to creat the Coils, his army that have been enhanced by nanomites and genetic engineering (the RoC Vipers are his army). But now I have to figure out where to draw the line. I have a Hulk figure sitting on my desk and it got me thinking.. If my Joeverse can have Serpentor, is something like the Hulk so far of a stretch? Obviously he wouldn't be as strong as he is in the Marvel Universe, and wouldn't be the Incredible Hulk in the Joeverse. But if there is a level of genetic engineering and nanomites, could a "mutant" monster be created? So just what and what isn't allowed in your Joeverse? How much sci-fi elements are there?

I belive in a healthy dose of what Larry Hama would call "suspension of disbelief". I actually have an easier lime accepting things like Serpentor, BATs, and nanomites than believing that people would go into battle wearing bright orange, red, or yellow. I suppose that's why I enjoy Zuludelta's filecard thread so much. I'm willing to bend some rules, such as beliving that a Patriot Grizzly tank can be dropped from a cargo plane ( a 'mission" I'm working on)! I'd love to see the Joes team up with Captain America, Iron Man, and Hulk. Lasers are few and far between.

Pretty involved. Every figure has a specific roll in my collection, and was also bought to be assigned a position. A very strong structured outline.

My problem with allowing Captain America, Wolverine and such.. if have these kind of people, what need are the Joes?
The Joes are top military, all very highly skilled, but they're nto Captain America level.. So where does the line get drawn that still allows the Joes to be the best of the best, but allow things like Cap?

Very.
The Transformers are part of it. In 1984 they arrive. Between 1984 and 1986, the Autobots and Decepticons skirmish on Earth, with Megatron at last getting driven from the planet. In 1986, the Autobots retreat from the human public eye and initiate the construction of Autobot City, a refuge where they will store energy and prepare for the liberation of Cybertron. The Autobots try to stay out of human affairs as much as they can. Optimus Prime feels responsible for having brought the Decepticons to Earth, but many of the Autobots are not very fond of humans, as most humans act like Decepticons rather than Autobots. The Autobots will not share their technology with the humans because they know they will just use it to wage war. COBRA, GIJOE and MARS all steal technology from Autobot City. This is why in 1986, the Joe and COBRA vehicles become noticeably more sci-fi. The BATs are developed with Cybertronian technology. Neither the Autobots nor Decepticons play a role in the GIJOE versus COBRA story after 1986.

I try to keep things as much as based in reality as possible. However, cloning and nano bots are pretty much happening in the real world so the distinction is becoming much less.
Having said that, I do impose certain limits. In my 'verse Serpentor is a clone but he does NOT have the DNA of all the world's conquerors and leaders. These are false memories imparted by Mindbender. In the same way, Cobra La exists but as failed cloning experiments and they only think they've been around for centuries because they have very short life spans. Their determination of time is very different than our own becuase their DNA was laced with insect dna...Golobulus. I use Star Brigade but more in terms of satelite warfare and space station type reconnaissance and experimentation. The Lunartix empire exists but are failed clone experiments as well. |

The Joes are top military, all very highly skilled, but they're nto Captain America level.. So where does the line get drawn that still allows the Joes to be the best of the best, but allow things like Cap? Iron Man and others all can work to a degree without making Joes seem useless, since there's just one of each of them. I think the problem arises when there's too much going on. If you take the Marvel Universe as a whole, it's overwhelming. Along same line as the point of this thread, Batman works well on his own in the streets, but he also works as a great part of the JLA and the whole DC world. Problem is, I've always found it distracting reading Batman comics about him punching purse snatchers and remembering that this guy has a teleporter at home that can take him to a base on the moon where he teams up with gods and aliens! I guess I'm saying that anything works in modesty. Not for me though, I love all of it, realistic military and ridiculous robots and monsters, so defining a Joeverse would be pretty difficult. |
