A lot of us, including myself, have ripped on Hasbro for not giving us the Joes we want. It's a natural part of being a geek. We do that, and sometimes we lose sight of everything else. So, I started thinking and trying to learn more.
Hasbro owns all of this: Baby Alive, Battlestar Galactica, Cloverfield, Dino-Roars, Disney toys, Dora The Explorer, Duelmasters, Dungeons & Dragons, Easy-Bake, FurReal Friends, G.I. Joe, Ghost Rider, Giga Pets, Gloworm, Hallmark, Hannah Montana Hasbro Card Games, Hasbro Games, High School Musical, I-Dog, Incredible Hulk, Indiana Jones, Iron Man, Jurassic Park, Lazer Tag, Lite-Brite, Little Einsteins, Little Mermaid, Littlest Pet Shop, Magic: the Gathering, Maplestory, Marvel Universe, Mighty Muggs, Mr Potato Head, My Little Pony, Mystery Date, Nerf, Nickelodeon, Play-Doh, Playskool, Rubik's Cube, Sesame Street, Sid The Science Kid, Spider-Man, Spirograph, SpongeBob SquarePants, Star Wars Strawberry Shortcake, Super Soaker, The Backyardigans, The Eye of Judgement, The Simpsons, Tiger Electronics, Tinkertoy, Tonka, Toy Story, Transformers, Wizards of the Coast, Wolverine, X-Men. In bold are some things that, you know, are kind of a big deal to a lot of people. Others in bold are things that are probably a huge focus for the company. A lot of them are a bigger deal than GI Joe. I'll put it to you this way: Let's pretend a lot of guys in the GI Joe office want to give us the cool stuff we like. Hell, let's pretend that we are actually 50% of their focus. They answer all of our little letters and requests as best as possible. They like our ideas and want to run with them. Now, go back and look at that HUGE list. Yeah, need I remind you that I didn't include everything? That may be about half of the things that they have going on. Notice how many of them are for children. Small children, and even babies. Look at how many of them are something mainstream that a LOT of kids are into. Now, keep this in mind- Hasbro is a toy company that wants to make a ton of money. They aren't worried about nastalgic collectors, as they are probably a "point-something percent", if not a "point-zero-something percent" of what Hasbro is making money from. If they had a pie chart that had all the different consumers, we'd get a line. We're a smaller demographic than senior citizens to them. Deal with it. Now, if any of you had a large family or functioned around groups of people, you know what this is like. We're driving to town with our parents. They want to know where we all want to eat. So, they ask. A lot of the other kids in the vehicle say "McDonald's!" and you're screaming for "Ruby Tuesday's". Now imagine that this car is full of hundreds of kids and you're not even making good grades on your report card like you said you would. They probably never heard you. I imagine that Hasbro has an overall budget. If it's like the military with budget, the money goes to what is getting results and has a future. Everyone else gets some, too... but just enough to get them through. I imagine that every time we think we're getting screwed on some lame repaint or rehashed frankenstein... Some of the guys in the Joe office got screwed first. Anyone else wanna add some insight to this? |

I just won't accept the idea that five characters in 20 different outfits that range from boring grey camo to robo-cop suits are any more appealing to the target audience than cartoony sailors and bright orange street commandos.

heheheheh. I figured I'd post this... it seems appropriate
to the thread... hehehehehehehe. here's a pic of one of my Hasbro factory mock ups. it's a 12" SE on Baby Alive "card"/"box" stock. For those who don't know what a mock up is... itz a pre-production-packaging process so that a toy company will have an idea of what the figure will look like on card, in blister/bubble. If you look carefully at the base you'll see the card art shape cut into it ... but they've used whatever stock they had lying around for the mock up. it's one of the most amusing pieces in my collection... cuz snake eyes is looking all bad ass ... but he's been placed on a a Baby Alive stock. hahahahaha. yes this is a legit factory mock up. not a custom or whatever. Hasbro (and other toy companies) just use what they have lying around... to get the general 'look' of an item before it goes to final packaging etc. anyways... it seems appropriate considering Baby Alive being first on the list of Hasbro stuff... and the stock being used for GI JOE mock ups... I also have a 12" neo viper on 'pocket pogo' mock up stock and another SE on CONAIR dry foot massager stock... talk about spreading thin... Conair and Hasbro are linked legally on some level... I've seen Conair mentioned before in Hasbro internet write ups.

no, because this simplifies what actually occurs.
Hasbro has a ton of products, and each product has a brand management team (and in some cases with smaller brands or products, some brand management teams work on several different brands). these teams work independent of one another. first and foremost, the big brands will get the most resources, and smaller brands get less and less depending on their sales. now, every once in a while Hasbro develops a new brand that they put a lot of resources into to push, and other times they decide to re-establish an older brand and give it more money to accomplish this. but ultimately, these brands aren't a burden on one another. each brand has its own target market and strategies, and just because they are all Hasbro toys doesn't mean Hasbro has a singular strategy for them. so, with G.I. Joe, the team is hired to formulate a strategy that identifies the target market, secondary market, and figure out what products will be best to deliver the best products that those markets want. if they do well, they will get a larger budget to make more. if not, their needs are re-evaluated. this allows each brand to be able to continually target its own market irregardless of what any other brand is doing. it is also why they aren't spread too thin. Hasbro doesn't have a limited amount of employees that are then burdened with too many brands to manage. they hire teams to handle each brand, and do so individually. sure, if the company wasn't doing well and they didn't have the resources to fund all those brands some would suffer, but that isn't the case. if I am working on G.I .Joe, how am I spread too thin if John on floor 3 is working on My Little Pony? I'm not. |

And I'm not arguing that, nor am I saying that "they are spread too thin" when it comes to personell, work, etc.
I figure it's more of a financial issue. Team GI Joe only gets X amount of money, and no matter how many awesome ideas are rolling around on the floor with Team GI Joe- If the new "Dora Grows Tits" dolls are expected to sweep the market and become a worldwide craze, team Dora gets a better percentage of money. Team GI Joe gets an allowance, and if they kick ass and make Daddy Hasbro some mega cash, he'll raise their allowance to make better stuff so he can get more money. The issue is that there's a LOT of things that Hasbro has to divide their funds and resources among, and those things rise and fall from popularity quickly. It's almost competition within the company, in an odd way. They devote money to what they think will make more money... everything else is "sustained". |
