I'm currently working on a more "gritty" Joe-Verse. I'm kinda doing this for fun, but I want some opinions on it. Nothing is what it seems to be in this setting. Some things will come back, but they want be the same. A few teasers:
Cobra-La is probably one of the most reviled ideas in GI Joe. But here, it will return. But it's not a race of alien/pre-human creatures using organic technology. It's a religion, and many of Cobra's troops are proclaiming their faith... What if GI Joe wasn't "the best"... what if they were more like "The Dirty Dozen"? Hawk is tasked with leading a bunch of military badasses who aren't what the standard operating military wants in the ranks. The Arashikage have a history that ties in with that of GI Joe... dating back to World War 2. Tomax and Xamot... are they really Corsican Twins? Or is there something more disturbing behind their identical appearance? Cobra Commander... who is he? And how did he come into power? The Baroness... rightful heir to a title, wealth, an power? Or has she done something sinister to get where she is? Serpentor claims to be the reincarnation of countless warriors and conquerers... but is this true, or is he a delusional madman? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Restful Acres Retirement Home. Clayton grimaced a bit as he watched his father's quaking hands pour two glasses of brandy. It bothered him enough to see him hunched over his walker; confined to a life of loneliness, medication, and dependence in a nursing home. It bothered him even more to see the old man drink. There was little he could do to stop him, as the old fellow wouldn't even let his son pour the glasses. Momentarily, Clayton wondered how he got the bottle into such a place and how he kept it hidden from the nursing staff. "So, I know you didn't come here to gloat." Clayton's father cleared his throat, and still spoke hoarsely. "You ain't that kinda so'jer. Not that kind of c'mmander, either. Still can't belive after all these years they finally took my idea..." "Yeah... they're an unusual bunch, but they've got a lot of talent. And where they don't have the talent, they have plenty of potential."Clayton took the drink from the elderly man, stood for a moment, and when the old man took his seat, he eased into the couch once again. "Back in the end of the war, they told me they didn't want it... said they wanted to fight a war that folks could see... boost the morale and support at home. Funny, they got what they wanted with Afghanistan and Iraq... and look at that mess. Troops can't poop in the sand without some reporter coverin' the event with a damned camera. Ironic that... and ironic, they decide on taking my advice and givin' it t' my boy." "I suppose it is ironic. Perhaps a little too much of a coincidence. I think you've got a secret up your sleeve, and it's about time you let me in on it. I'll give you another secret in trade." Clayton eased a blank brown envelope to his father and sipped lightly on the brandy, watching the old man's reaction. The old man trembled as he put on his glasses, opened the folder and began inspecting the photographs. "So, he got into a training site, attacked one guy and put 'im in the hospital. Later on, took out some of the big wigs having dinner... took out their security detail, too... and nobody heard nothin'." "Yes. No leads. Just that one mark at the banquet matching the one at the training site. Kid has a mark on his arm that matches it. Sounds like a gang thing." The old man took off his glasses for a moment, and looked up at his son. Clayton knew that look. It was a "think about it" look. "Doesn't that seem a lil' strange, son?" "What do you mean?" "Guy comes in and takes out some intel and R&D brass without so much as breaking a damned sweat in a few seconds. Normal, everyday Special Forces candidate... still alive and sliced to pieces. And you already know the kid has a mark on his arm. I think you know there's a reason that kid's alive." Clayton nodded. "We did a background check on this kid. No family, no real home to speak of. Clean record. Did some overseas travel, but nowhere that sends up a red flag. He got a clearance, even." The old man grunted again and passed over another envelope, parchment. "Open it." Clayton pulled a letter from the envelope, and read at a half-whisper. "...your debt has been paid... your son will find him in... that's the kid's unit! Dad, what are you not telling me?" Clayton threw the letter down on the couch and leaned forward, folding his arms. "Son, I was just a butterbar Leiutenant back when we tied up with Tojo. According to arial recon, there was some sort of activity... a camp, sorta... on this island. It was pretty well hid. Hell, the damned island wasn't even on a map. They sent us by light patrol boat, but the Japs were waitin' for us. Fought them best we could, and I got the wound in my shoulder. Swam to shore, expecting to at least see what the Japs were doin', maybe find a way outta there. Got into the foliage there, and every damned Jap was dead. I didn't even hear a single shot go off, not a one. And that's when they found me." Clayton leaned forward, running his fingers through his own grey hair... "Who? Us?" "Hell, no. They were Jap'nese, but they didn't like what the imperials was doing to folks... forced death marches, torture, makin' families leap off the cliffs... but they didn't want t' work against 'em. Wasn't their way they said. They patched me up. I told 'em the least I could do was keep my mouth shut." "And so..." "And so damned Tojo had another group come back and raid that island again, this time better armed. I had my sidearm, and did the best I could. We fought and killed ev'ry damned one of them. The old one, guy in charge... almost caught a bayonet in his back, but I dropped the Jap that was gonna do it. Said that they owed me a debt. This is their payment. And as it stands, you're the first person I've told. And I suppose you're inheriting my payment, son". "So, you're telling me that this guy in a hospital in Bethesda is some 'super soldier' that an old Japanese man sent? Kid's not very... Japanese. And the goods are damaged, poor guy had his throat slashed nearly to the bone... doc says he'll never speak again. Sounds like we're getting ripped off, Dad." The old man leaned forward and smiled. "He ain't just a soldier, son. He's damn near a ghost from hell, and some day you'll thank me for washing up on some dirty beach in the Pacific. I seen what these fellas can do, and I told 'em I wished I had just one. Well, I got him... and he's yours. I'd advise picking him up." Clayton picked up the photos, and took a second look at the picture of the blood smeared on the wall... some sort of hexagram about tranquility and peace, they'd said. Then the bandaged kid's arm. He slid them in his envelope and finished his brandy. "They wouldn't give me your old callsign, dad. Said "Tomahawk" wasn't P.C. enough... said it might offend some 'indigenous Americans'. And you chose not to name me 'Thomas' after you, so it doesn't work." "So, what are they callin' ya, then?" Clayton smiled..."Just 'Hawk'." |

This sounds great. More Realistic Joeverses are a great aspect of fandom. If you're looking for some info or some research, I highly recommend the thread entitled, "What Secrets Lurk in the File Cards?" It's one of the longest running threads on the tank, and it's full of info on this very subject. Just a suggestion. It may save you some time and headaches on research. All the guys there are really cool, and would be happy to help you if you have specific questions.

I'm actually taking requests for some of the A-list (Popular) characters and even some B-Listers. Gimme a character and let me see how I can defile them!

Cobra Commander:
He is the leader of the organization calling itself "Cobra". The man's background is a mystery. Speculation in Interpol, NSA, CIA, and various other intelligence organizations is conflicted and incomplete... much of it is suspected to be falsified to further cloud the truth. No known family, friends, nothing. Rumors fly around about who he is- some say he was a used car salesman. Others say he was a soldier who was nearly incinerated. It has even been said that he isn't even human. These are all lies. The truth is much more disturbing. Cobra Commander is any one of us. He is the man who decided that he didn't like the way things were, just as many of us decide. The difference is, that Cobra Commander was the man who had the motivation and ruthlessness to do something about it. Any and all attempts to infiltrate and determine his identity have met with abysmal failure. Operatives, or their family members, have turned up dead- some tortured to death. He is always one step ahead. He is untouchable, almost godlike. Most operatives shiver at the very mention of his name. He has contacts in various countries and organizations- Iran, North Korea, Al-Qaeda, Mujihadeen, and many more. His troops are of multiple nations and motivations- and all of them have heard his words and promises... and pledged fanatical oaths of loyalty to him. They will die for him, kill for him, and do anything to make him the undisputed ruler of this world. Some claim he wishes to plunge the world into chaos for his own personal gain. This is incorrect. To Cobra Commander, the world is already there- he wishes to establish order. COBRA: The Cobra organization is varied and, to a certain extent, complicated. The rank-and-file troopers are from all walks of life. Some examples are as follows: Many private security contractors, or "soldiers for hire" serving the U.S. were booted out into the streets after the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. Some of these were released from their contracts for misconduct or violations of the rules of engagement. Others simply found that after the war, no one in the civilian world needed a money-driven soldier. Cobra Commander was there to pick them up almost immediately and forgive any prior mistakes... and he offered more pay. US troops that were discharged for violations of the Uniform Code of Military Justice, or were released from active duty after the wars because the current military has downsized. Cobra believes in a world that will always need soldiers, and a silly thing like a Court Martial should never render a soldier useless. When the world discarded them, the Commander awaited them with open arms. Third-world terrorists and insurgents who watched their terrorist organizations crumble to nothing after years of fighting Americans were the easiest to recruit. Many of them had motivations as simple as feeding a family or having a little money to spend on some luxuries. Others wish for America to stop supporting Israel and stay out of the affairs of the Middle East. Cobra Commander is willing to make sure all of that happens, one way or another... Criminals who have served their sentence in prison, their debt to society paid- went into a world that rejected them. Despite their hardship, their punishment was never over. No employment, no friends... Cobra offered them a chance, and ignored their prior criminal record... and it is far better than returning to prison. In some way or another, all of Cobra's legions still cling fanatically to the promises of their Commander. The organization recieves funding from various terrorist and undisclosed contributors. Rumored to be among them are fanatical terrorist cells, retired former Soviet generals, deposed dictators who still have wealth, and even some blackmailed government officials in various countries. The true miracle of Cobra is not how it grew from a grass-roots radical movement, but rather how all of these small pieces were brought together. Indeed, it has been done- the one true worst nightmare of the free world. |

Very interesting. I think I'm looking forward to reading some more. I thought about some of my favorite characters, and how they could fit in:
Gung Ho and Torpedo-keep them close to their original file cards. Gung Ho is a crazy Marine whose weapons of choice are his fists, knives, and an old fashioned "bloop gun". Torpedo is a bad ass SEAL who is ferocious in or out of the water. Falcon-a young SF officer who's not afraid to take chances. Served under Hawk before. Tired of the "Hollywood wars". not reckless, but willing to bend the rules or make up his own. Lifeline-Air Force PJ. Smart and tough. Capable of great compassion, but is also able to mix it up with his teammates. Not a pacifist, carries a .45 and a smaller version of the M-249 SAW along with his medical gear-his idea of "preventative medicine". |
