Snake Eyes is a ninja. Destro is a cool guy with a metal mask and sometimes he has knights as soldiers. CC no matter in what incarnation is a classic villain. SS is awesome as well for being a white ninja.
Then we have Duke. Duke is just a guy in a military uniform. A basic military uniform. He speaks other languages and leads the joe team when Hawk is away. I can understand why he is popular from the gi joe storyline standpoint. But why do we have so many incarnations of this character in the toy line? I mean action figure wise. Does he sell well with kids? What is the appeal? |

I think the Cartoon had a lot to do with it.

He's the generic hero template people are meant to project themselves upon, like Luke Skywalker in Star Wars.
There are lots of cooler characters in GI Joe and Star Wars but they're too idiosyncratic for the vast majority of the audience to feel a direct connection to. Easier way to say it, they're the normal guys in the abnormal situation. |

I read each Joe comic as a kid and teenager at least a dozen times each, he wasn't the star in the comic that he was in the cartoon.
Mostly because of the Marvel Comic run, I was a huge fan of Hawk and only tolerated Duke. In my eyes, Stalker was always the lead noncom. |

You ever hear a song on the radio or MTV that totally sucks ass? But the more they play it the more you start to like it? Then the next thing you know it becomes ultra-popular. It's the same thing. I don't think Duke or Snake-Eyes or Bumblebee are really that popular at all. Hasbro just pushes those characters at us & like that crappy song, people think they need to buy them. It's brainwashing.
Majority of humans can't think for themselves. They need to be told which characters they like. How many threads have you seen where somebody asks which character they should buy? Or threads asking what toy will be worth more money in the future? Because most people cannot think for themselves. Just look at teenage girls, mindless followers that have to copy everybody else! |

Thankfully, I've rejected most of what's been served over the past 20 years or so, but I still cling to what I was spoon-fed as a kid in the 80's.

You make great points here. In fact, I think you're pretty right on with most of what you've said here. It's sad, but true. Most of us need to be spoon-fed.

They're doing the same exact thing with Duke, Snake-Eyes, Storm Shadow, Destro & Cobra Commander. Constantly releasing those characters in almost every wave. Look at the new ROC wave 5, Duke, Snake-Eyes, Storm Shadow & Ripcord AGAIN! Even if those character are that popular we surely don't need so many versions. What's Hasbro up to? |

You gotta have a good guy? He is the good guy leader (Hawk just dose not cut it nor Flint), snake eyes is just badass in a can but he is not a leader, he's a loner. Gotta be some kind of command and conrol structure in any military unit/orginization or it's nothing more than mercs and raiders...
