I've been thinking about this for awhile, but I am kind of amused with the whole ninja thing in GI Joe. Lets face it, Ninjas were hired assassins in medieval Japan, and the modern assassin wouldn't be running around assassinating people with exotic medieval weapons. They would used silenced pistols, sniper rifles, poisons, whatever. I am fine with martial arts and the use of the small sword Snake Eyes used in Resolute (too lazy to get the spelling), but only as a back up. And that 7 point plan whatever for killing someone that Snake Eyes uses on Storm Shadow in Resolute is silly too.
I am not trashing Snake Eyes, Storm Shadow, or Resolute. I do like them a lot. I just think it would be more realistic if Storm Shadow, and all of the ninjas, used firearms. I did read the Storm Shadow-Firefly comic where Storm Shadow used a mini uzi and I thought that was cool, although the costume was silly too. I know a lot of peeps didn't like it, but I thought the ROC version of Storm Shadow was freakin awesome, right down to the sidearm and tennis-like shoes. Just seemed more practical. I mean, if you have to wear white, that was the way too go. But if he busted out a silenced MP5 or something, it would increase his stock value. What does everyone else think? |

Go to the G.I. Joe Fan Art Forum and Look up Zuludelta's G.I. Joe Concepts thread. He's updating all the Joes and Cobras in a more realistic setting and you'll LOVE the update he did with Storm Shadow (yes, he has a gun).
I agree. Someone in one of the anti-RoC threads said they thought it bad that SS a "trained ninja" used a pan of spagehetti sauce against Ripcord. My thought, when I counted it, was that a "trained ninja" would use whatever was at hand to get the advantage. SS knew that Ripcord was in a suit of armor and most likely blades and shurken wouldn't work and that the suit would make Ripcord stronger and probably able to crush SS easily, so he'd do whatever he could to get away and use whatever was available to get the advantage. The way the ninjas are portrayed wouldn't be accurate with what they would really be like nowadays. I'm sure they'd still be martial artist masters and experts with bladed weapons, but they'd also be skilled snipers, explosives experts, masters of disguise, poison experts, etc... They wouldn't rely on just swords and shurikens, they'd be just as likely to take and use a gun as a sword. It would all depend on the job and what needed to be done to accomplish the job. Silent weapons would still be the weapon of choice, but they wouldn't not use a gun, that's just stupid. SE, in Resolute, would have stalked that last trooper from the woods and taken him out silently instead of running across an open field and hoping not to get shot.

They seem to go just fine with all my laser troops and Mech Suit technicians :P~ Not to mention the mutants and genetic supermen that the Enemy rolls with.

It's ninja, not ninjas. Same word is singular and plural. Don't mean to be a grammar nazi, but yeah.
Snake-Eyes is probably the closest analog of a modern ninja you could get in the modern world (save one important detail). The reality though is that most ninja didn't wear black outfits (none did in fact) and sneak into castles by moving through shadows. Most were spies disguised as servants, or figures expected to be seen traveling like monks or medicine salesmen. Kunoichi would often go in as a concubines, geisha, or serving girls. While assassination was common, info-gathering was their main trade. This is why SE would NEVER fly as a real ninja. He'd have a hard time blending in anywhere. Even if he wore a rubber mask, he couldn't smooth-talk his way into the enemy camp and get their best secrets. If ninja did see combat their shinobifuku would often be camouflaged to blend in with the local environment, and reversible for other situations. Also, the shinobigatana (ninja sword) was not able to cut through whole trees like a samurai katana (or tanks for that matter). It was typically a cheap, utilitarian tool never meant to cut anything stronger than a rope of someone's neck. If I ever saw historic ninja realistically depicted I'd probably crap my trousers in surprise. >.>;;; |

Zartan and Firefly are probably the closest the Joes and Cobra have to real Ninja.

The funny thing is, I always felt that SE was supposed to be a more "modern" ninja, using whatever weapons available, whereas SS was the more "traditional" ninja. However, I did like his (Storm Shadow's) portrayal in the movie and in some of the more recent comics. And Storm Shadow used firearms many times in the Marvel run.
