Maybe this question is more for the new comic book series instead of the original G.I Joe movie 1984. If Cobra Commander knew that Golobulus was going to come after him , why didn?t he make weapons to prepare for it or prepare to do battle with Cobra La? He knew the technology they had ? They couldn?t have advanced much since they were stuck in their racial superiority complex thing with Golobulus in charge.

The one consistent thing about Cobra Commander, with the exception of Resolute, is that he's not a good leader. He's led by ego and impulse, not strategy. He's even been shown to *assume* victory too early only to sound the retreat and run to hide a moment later. It's part of the reason why Cobra never succeeds.

cartoon is different than the comics.
cartoon is fun and has robots and aliens and lasers and time travel and alternate worlds and crazy fun shit.
the comics is real world and boring.

cobra commander on the cartoon and in the comics are two different people.

Yeah, the retconning was bad. Especially being that, I think "Cobra-La", with a different name, could be a pretty cool faction in GI Joe. Just, without the Cobra connection. I mean, I guess they could ally with Cobra, but, just none of this "origin of Cobra" BS.

Maybe in future GI Joe media, they can incorporate Cobra-La, in that way. But, they must change the friggin' name.

It's a little too early to say about the comics, he doesn't know if Golobulus is coming after him or not, and he's building up everything anyway. Besides, he knew enough to protect himself against Nemesis.

I seem to remember reading it was a place-holder name and some dumbass at Hasbro was, like, "no, this is cool, keep it!" and the writers hated it.

If they were to make "Cobra-La" it's own separate non-Cobra-related faction (which would be my suggestion), then the name would be especially problematic. As it is right now, its just very lazy and kind of dumb. One hang-up is, fans are accustomed to it (nostalgic even), so ironically Cobra-La "sounds right", despite being ridiculous.
