MARS selling to both sides is one way to explain the Stinger and the VAMP. It'd also explain the MOBAT/CAT and could also explain the HISS/Hyena and the FANG/Hawk, if you don't like the BAF explanation that Cobra stole the plans to the SAS Force Hawk and managed to somehow destroy every single Hawk...

I suggest the Destro mini-series from Skybound for some of you

The BAT file card describes them as unreliable, prone to exploding, and unable to distinguish between friend or foe. Cobra uses them because Cobra Commander is a monster and views all his troops as expendable, but the Joes would refuse to use these horrific collateral damage machines purely on ethical grounds.

The joes did try to have a robot with Robo-Joe, but it was too evil and they had to cut a man in half to merge with it to keep it under control. I imagine they decided a whole army of that would be too much trouble. I think the other half of the man they did not use was given an honorable discharge and he retired to Palm Springs.

GI Joe not having robots is probably due to the moral complications/concerns. Even with drones, there's a concern that the possibility for indiscriminate killing exists, due to the disconnect between the operator and the battle being fought.
I'm also okay with the idea of Cobra having superior technology, but with shoddier build quality and hard-to-maintain overcomplexity. Either way, GI Joe not having robots works best, IMO. It kind of looks like the old Space Corps! stuff from Lanard, but sans anything as awesome as a horse with a space-breathing apparatus. I don't know if that's what they're referencing or not, but that's what it reminds me of. |

It's the best Skybound series by far. The other ones left me disinterested or repelled, but Destro was solid.
