I have recently got back into O-Ring, and have a box of some unopened Joes my dad bought extras of when I was a kid so that we could get enough UPC points for the Joe Colton mail always. Among those are a few NF Storm Shadow, a favorite of mine growing up.
Reading the file card, his uniform is listed as a Specialized Chameleon camouflage battle uniform. I have always just thought that his coloration was his camo pattern, but reading this, I am wondering if the actual intention of the design was meant to invoke a sort of phasing of the uniform adapting to a dark/light environment relative to the base color of the uniform. It was certainly never portrayed as changing or anything like that in the comics or toon, but just a cool thought and was wondering if it had been discussed! Hope you’re all having a great weekend! |

Don't know.
The "Inviso-power" color changing Ninja Force figures came out in 1994. But if the plan was always for them to change color, why wait two years? Maybe it was just a way to write some filler text to take up space on the file card. |

Something like that, yeah. Cards from this era occasionally had some fluff that was either a bit vague or open-ended, probably just to get kids (or adults like us!) to headcanon what it all means. The card also mentions "Cloak of Chameleon" as an "esoteric technique", so the costume could very well have some special properties. Either way, I always felt the color scheme was cool enough to justify itself without any actual advertised tactical benefits.

Hey guys, thanks for the replies.
I figured as much, that it was probably just filecard filler; I’ve always enjoyed the descriptions given to the kit whether on these cards or the HoF manuals. I’ve been on a huge Ninja kick the past few months and re-discovering a lot of my joys from childhood has been a lot of fun. I think I’ve watched every worthwhile ninja flick in the past couple weeks. |
