if i had to and sales would 100% be guaranteed to give me the actual value of things and i wouldnt sit on them for years (like my vintage 85 (86?) bat arms i literally just sold but had to refund because they'd been kicking around in my garage for 5years and lost):
i'd sell my all my motuc, what's left of my 6" marvel legends, and half my army builders if over 5 figures. i would keep all my o-ring figures, 4" action figures, and things that are in that scale (like my baf marvel legends stuff). |

About two dozen 80s O-ring Joes would be my bare minimum, from what I have now. The first toys I collected as an adult came from rebuilding the core of what I had as a kid. Those would be the last parts of my collection that I would part with if I had to liquidate.

I would recommend keeping what you treasure the most, and to take the time as long as you need to figure out what that is.
I don't collect vintage GI Joe at the moment, but the times I have thought about it I have thought that 82-86 would be what I'm interested on. By 82-86, I mean all figures and vehicles from these years. If that's still too much, I would go 82-84, and if that's still too much, then perhaps the absolute minimum would be everything from 82. But personally, that wouldn't be enough for me - too few Cobra, too many good characters and vehicles missing. That's why I would recommend, take all the time you need to figure out what that absolute minimum means. You can make a list of things that you absolutely need based on different reasons, e.g. you had it as a kid, or you actually wanted it but couldn't have as a kid, or because your collection would feel incomplete without this, etc. Then make a list of things you think you would need because e.g. those associations you mentioned (if this becomes too crazy, then try to make them logical, for example, "I think I need everything from 85"). Everything else not in this lists can probably be discarded and that would be a first step. You can decide on the items on the "I think I need" at a later moment. I feel your pain in downsizing. Couple of years back I went kind of crazy and bought anything I could see 1/18 scale in stores, and now have a bunch of stuff I don't need but don't want to necessarily part with. So, if it is hard to downsize with an incoherent collection, can't imagine what would it be if it is a coherent one. A year and half ago I found my center, and finally figured out what I wanted - it was to get mostly every new-sculpt figure (2002-2005) since these were the toys I played with and had a kid. That toy style really resonates with me and therefore this is what I want to have. Nonetheless I have been buying vintage vehicles as well as not all new-sculpt era vehicles fit my bill. I'm being very picky with which vehicles I choose from the vintage era, and I have made lists as I mentioned earlier based on real army needs - artillery, light utility vehicles, armored carriers, tanks, etc. I have slipped off a little bit and gotten some stuff that I just found for good prices (like a complete Havoc for $40) but I haven't had a hard time being disciplined about this. I guess same can be applied to downsizing. |

Let's say you either had to or wanted to take your collection down to a "bare minimum," what would that collection look like? Since the reason you're downsizing matters & has a bearing on what you get rid of (I mean, if you need money, you're obviously getting rid of the most valuable stuff), we'll just say money's not the prime motive for this exercise. I've been slowly but surely paring mine down, with the luxury of not needing to financially, and it's a helluva thing. My motivation is that I just don't want to haul all this shit around with me the rest of my life, both figuratively & literally. Should be a simple task, but what I run into is this weird association between things that makes it hard to get rid of stuff. Like, if I keep a Conquest, it makes me want to also keep a Skystriker, or if I decided I don't need some of the Dreadnoks, might as well get rid of them all...stuff like that. It starts feeling like an all or nothing deal. It's goofy.
Anyway, so where I'm at now is keeping a few iconic vehicles that I dig & trips the ol' nostalgia buzzer: Rattler, Conquest, VAMP, RAM, HISS, FERRET...etc. What's taking forever are the figures...I thought of at least keeping it to modern era 4" (with some new o-ring redos) and one figure of each character I really dig, but that's such an exhausting prospect in itself, it makes me want to just toss it all. It's just the sheer accumulated amount of shit! And I have nowhere near the collection many of you have. But for you I guess you have to ask what size do you want your collection to be? Which makes my first question how big is it now. I see the size of some peoples collections and do they truly enjoy them if they take up the whole room? . Is it one wall a half a wall etc. I would do my favourites for 82-87 figures (whether modern or arah) which probably means top 50 and call it a day. Vehicles take up too much room. Though if I was to do vehicles would probably do: 1. Stinger 2. Ferret 3. Fang 4. Night landing 5. Moray And for the joes 1. Mauler 2. Ram and silver cycle 3. Tomohawk 4. Skystriker 5. Vamp? Hovercraft. That too me would be very clean and the essence of joe for me. |

I'd keep the few o-ring figures I have left. Trim down my ME collection to favorite characters and a few Cobra troop builders. For vehicles: HasLab Skystriker, ME Tomahawk, regular AWE Striker and the Bumblebee one, a couple of HISS Tanks, the WHALE and maybe the Raider.

Snake Eyes with Timber (52). It's their fault I'm in this mess anyway. Top 3 is probably Snake Eyes with Timber, Shipwreck with Polly and Spirit with Freedom. And it's not just because they have pets, don't get me wrong the animals are great. But all 3 of those figures on their own are amazing too.

Yeah that?s fine nothing wrong with that, but are you a completionist? The guy is talking about downsizing so hypothetically if you had to downsize what would that look like to you

Yeah, I love the Classified scale and the extra detail that we have now, but at the end of the day the o-rings are still where it's at. |
