This isn't an opinion piece, but more of a question. Since the retro line has been expanded to being in all the b&ms and available via fan channels does that mean going forward the main Classified will go back to being modern updates of the figures classic looks while the retro line be the home the 6" version of the figures iconic looks?
I think it's fair to say had the retro series been a thing prior QUICK KICK, SHIPWRECK, and possibly TORPEDO would have been retro carded. As far as who's next for the retro card treatment my guess would be FLINT, BLUDD, LT. FALCON, v2 ROADBLOCK, and the COBRA Officer and Trooper. Personally, I'd like to see SHOOTER get retro carded.

What you say makes sense. By not being exclusive to Walmart, especially; Hasbro basically opened up an opportunity to serve best of both worlds. They had a few years to see what fans want (which is both/one or the other; and in between). Now they have a cash cow option to serve everyone (updated and 1:1).
I would add Mindbender to your list as well. Not much difference than his already released figure; but gives opportunity for those who missed out or did not want the extras to be on retro card. Be awesome if they rereleased the figures already on cards too, with the upgraded paper. Doubt that happens but never know. |

I think this would be a great way to rerelease figures too. Guys like Chuckles and Serpentor, give them the retro card treatment with less accessories (Or in Serpentor's case, no Air Chariot).
It's also a great way to keep your major named characters around. Transformers has an Optimus Prime and Megatron every year, it's a good way to keep a handful of recurring faces, while also making them a bit different. They made it quite clear these are based on the original Toys, it's entirely possible to expect in 3-4 years they'll do a Sunbow edition with minor changes. |

It would be nice if they did it that way. I just hope that we don't get too many retro releases that are barely noticeable, like Snow Serpent and Eels. They could have done so much more with those, but didn't. And I don't blame Lenny and his team... I blame the Hasbro leadership, because I'm sure the Classified team was hindered by budget restraints.

Yep, there's another one that didn't make a whole lot of sense. They should've done Blackout Storm Shadow for mainline and then the retro one we ended up getting.

I'm hoping they get into POC levels of redesign for the mainline.

In these cases, I think it was less of providing a more classic version of a figure and more getting a rerelease of a popular figure on the market. It's something we've seen Hasbro do a number of times in Marvel Legends and Star Wars Black Series -- releasing a retro version when the original is scarce/expnesive (indicating high demand that Hasbro can monetize). I would not be surprised to see Cobra blueshirts, Major Bludd, Dr. Mindbender, and Serpentor get a Retro treatment sooner rather than later. |

Same. Besides the Crimson Alley Viper and Shadow Tracker, there are a few main characters I'd like to see redone in Classified in their POC looks (Dusty being at the very top of that list), but I really want to see Lenny extend his creativity beyond brand new and lesser-known characters without the constraints of a 40 year old design aesthetic.
Unfortunately, I doubt that the Retro cards no longer being exclusive means that figures which are simply larger and more detailed versions of their OG counterparts like Shipwreck and Quick Kick will be reserved only for that subline and that Classified is going to get more modern again. The portion of the fanbase demanding 1:1 recreations of what they had as kids, while small, is too loud for that. I think this just means that there's even more spots to put figures made in their classic '80s looks than there were before. Last edited by Snake Pants; 04-02-2024 at 03:42 PM.. |
