If Ken wears fatigues is he a action figure? He is a doll so what makes a action figure an action figure or are they both and some collectors are just insecure about collecting dolls?

Marketing. ;) They're all "dolls" but the term "action figure" was coined by Hasbro to market dolls to boys. Since then, there's all kinds of spin, and blue-faced explanations like size differences, articulation, "action features," etc., but it all goes back to that very thing. It's a marketing scheme.

I had a Ken doll and an an AT Land Adventurer in 1983. GI Joe's clothes were way too small for Ken, but Ken's clothes fit G1 Soundwave just fine.
I used to put a smoking jacket on Soundwave all the time to make him posh, I wish I had a photo.

oh man you got me. i believe there are sizes to what's a doll and what's an action figure.
12"? doll. the 12" gijoes are dolls. 10"? figurine. the 10" toybiz figures whatever the hell they were supposed to be. 8"? action figure. if the clothes come off it's a doll. mego are dolls. 6 and below? action figure. then the semantics are like "well, the marvel sentinels are 12" and 2' tall!" except, that they are part of an action figure line. so they are action figures. so the question is, "if i put gijoe clothing on a ken doll, is he an action figure?" in my definition: no. because 12" gijoes are dolls. it doesnt even make him a gijoe; just like remco and lanard are not gijoes as much as people selling lots of figures on ebay want to believe. i wanted a beret for my hof grunt figure, my sister had a pink one from her barbies. so grunt got it, i could never get it to sit like flint's so it went back to her stuff. |

Do any of you remember Glamour Gals? They were basically Barbie, except 4" and came with all these accessories and playsets. My sister used to collect them and she even got their large cruise ship playset. Once she aged out of toys, I took over the ship and used to use it, and the figures, as hostages for Cobra.
Curious if you all think the Glamour Gals were dolls or action figures?

im always looking for this kind of stuff for background figures in my space station im never going to build. that firebird would be great to turn into some kind of air ship. i'd toss them in the doll lane, because most of them still have clothes you can put on and take off. it's not like a jacket and then clothing is molded onto the figure; but treat them like action figures. just as ken in joe fatigues, is still a doll. Agree, marketing. I might have said articulation once, but that line has gotten blurrier. Intended audience and play patterns are different, but that’s all in our heads.
