Growing up, boy toys were "figures" and girl toys were "dolls". So Flint was a "figure" but Lady Jaye was a "doll".
That was how my mom referred to them anyway. Still does, actually, LOL. |

For thousands of years, any toy made for children that resembles the human form, regardless of the presence of clothing, mechanical articulation, or even a face, is a doll.
G.I. Joe introduced to male youth the concept of calling dolls by a newer, more acceptable name, but that does not change what action figures really are.

Remember those 12" DC Super Hero Girls from a few years ago? I think they were marketed as "action dolls", which I found very interesting. I actually bought 2 to check them out, since I already owned a few Monster High dolls.
Also this 2016 SDCC She-Ra, kind of falls into that "action doll" category. Can't recall if it was billed as an "action doll" though. I own 2.

Uhm, excuse me, sir.
If girls play with Ken, he's a "doll." If boys play with Ken, he's an "action figure." If boys put a dress on a Ken doll, he's an "action figure with a dress." ;)

Origin of “Doll”
mid 16th century (denoting a mistress): pet form of the given name Dorothy . The sense ‘small model of a human figure’ dates from the late 17th century. Dorothy -name origin and meaning: Dorothea is a girl's name of Greek origin. It combines the Greek words doron, meaning “gift” with theos, meaning “God,” resulting in “Gift of God.” Do with that what you will. I conclude that 1) action figure collecting makes a proper mistress and 2) action figure dolls are a gift from the gods! Last edited by ARBCO Avenue; 02-29-2024 at 12:18 AM.. |

I think Scott Neitlich (Toy Guru) described the distinction as "crash n' bash" vs "nurturing" play. Something like that.

But... if you crash and bash too much, Joe's injured... and then he needs to be nurtured back to health. What a conundrum!

I'm guessing this was sold in the girls aisle and marketed as a doll. Last edited by AWOL; 02-29-2024 at 12:14 AM.. |

I sometimes scratch my head at some of the rabbit holes I see people go down on this forum. We went from is Ken an action figure or doll to now how the official origin of doll and gods began. Lmao.
