I know I am absolutely in the minority on this take and it's blasphemous to even suggest it lol but I was never big on vehicles as a kid, even less so as an adult, and the figures were always the sole reason I collected G.I. Joe. The only toy line that I ever actually actively loved the vehicles in was M.A.S.K., and that was largely in part because they were in a much smaller scale.
My understanding is that the line was originally conceived of and intended to be a way to sell primarily vehicles, and that the figures were just meant to compliment the larger toys. Then the figures ended up being far more successful alone than Hasbro expected and more focus was given to that aspect of the brand. ***edited to add*** Oh, see, I didn't read ahead.

FWIW, I actually expected Classified to do well. The feeling I got was that with 50th's lame offerings and FSS/GIJCC winding down, 1/18 was kind of played out. They were offering ME versions of old figures instead pf creating new chararcters or new styles. Plus you had Marvel Legends and Star Wars Black. I actually felt that once Star Wars Black was moving forward, GI Joe was next.
Now saying all that, I refuse to get 6 inch. I have had 3 3/4 since I was about 5 years old. Not switching now. But I see why people like them, they are nicely done. And no doubt profitable. Saying that, I feel like I see a lot of classified and SWB at discount stores and not many TVC for example. I do see the odd Classified figure that I think, man, I really want that. And the Indiana Jones line looks awesome, in large part because they have figures never available before in 4 inch. |

Same. I liked the vehicles, but the characters were always the main draw for me. I blame the file cards and comic book for this.
Not sure if expectations were correct about the existing fanbase. This probably doesn't apply to most regulars here, but Classified drew me back into caring about the brand. People like me maybe help offset the theoretical jaded 4" collector who doesn't want to buy into yet another Joe line. Last edited by SpottedEagleSvn; 02-01-2024 at 06:54 PM.. |

The file cards were so fascinating to me as a little kid. And educational! I know I learned a lot about cities and geography and just more advanced words and general spelling from reading those at such an early age (I had just turned 5 when I got my first Joes). As a little kid I was constantly asking my mom, dad, grandpa, grandma and older brother what words like "equivalent", "various", "proficient", "pacifist", "incendiary", "saboteur", "methodical", "schizophrenic", etc. all meant lol I can vividly remember reading them in bed every night when I would go to sleep.

First, I wouldn't call G.I. Joe a vehicle line. It's an action figure line with vehicles. Vehicles are a bonus but I don't think many people would have quit buying G.I. Joes if vehicles weren't produced.
Second, if fans were only interested in core characters, then 1/18 figures are just as apt to fail as 1/12 figures after they've made all the core characters. Finally, although a 1/12 figure may cost more than a 1/18 figure, you get more bang for your buck. It all comes down to whether someone likes the product, not just the price. If 1/12 scale figures are appealing to consumers, they will naturally justify the higher prices because the figures are larger. If price was the only factor, one could argue that 1/24 figures should be more successful because they will cost less, but there's a point where consumers may not be interested in a certain scale because too-small figures lack detail and functionality and too-large figures are cumbersome and space-consuming. When The Black Series came out, I was all onboard for a 1/12 G.I. Joe line, but most of the naysayers back then thought that the scale would replace the 1/18 line, but that line already had one foot out the door. I think personal prejudice against another scale was the main factor behind these arguments that a 1/12 scale wouldn't be successful. I'm glad they were wrong.

G.I. Joe already had two iconic lines in different scales, the 12" and 3.75" ones, before Classified came along. There was never any reason to believe another change couldn't succeed.
