Although Cobra Commander's true identity is usually a mystery, I was thinking about how, over the years, different incarnations of the character have either been associated with or outright given different real names. As such, I wanted to try to compile all of the names he's been associated with.
In a sort of roundabout way, I think the first name he was ever given was Marcus Kassells, from Battle Action Force. Marcus Kassells is (very likely) the real name of Baron Ironblood, at least according to "The File on the Baron." Eventually, Baron Ironblood became Cobra Commander in this universe. It's also kinda interesting how similar Kassells is to Kessler... To my knowledge, he was never associated with any particular real name in ARAH, though I know there is some speculation that his name is actually Fred Broca. Although I've not read the run myself, apparently he uses the name Garret Freedlowe in the Devil's Due continuation of ARAH. In Rise of Cobra, we know that his name is Rex Lewis. This might be the only time we've had a Cobra Commander whose name is just something we know outright, no mystery at all. Finally, in Renegades, Cobra Commander presented himself to the world as Adam DeCobray. This is of course another false identity he's constructed for himself. Anyways, that's all I could think of, but I was wondering if there were any that I missed? |

Well Billy was known as Billy Kessler in the rah comics and we know it was his real name so mr Kessler.
Of course the black major was John shepherd and it was explicitly stated that this name was changed for his family but become considered his real name as was the baroness who picked up the name decobray which was also introduced as an alias. It did see likely that the Fred series were connected to cc I; the later issues so maybe Fred Kessler?

Does Billy Kessler use his father's last name or his mother's? ARAH had a couple issues with Billy's mom and I always had the feeling that the Kessler last name came from her. Don't have my comics at work to verify if they ever name her, but always was under the impression that Billy would rebel against his father like that.

Pretty sure Kessler was Billy's mother's name. I like the theory that CC's non-disguised face is the basis for the Freds. Not sure I love the idea that CC's actual name is Fred, but I suppose there's no reason it couldn't be.
Seemed like Sunbow CC was actually named Cobra Commander based on The Movie. I guess he was rechristened as such once he proved his brilliance by sticking his face in a pulsing pod of mutation spores. Probably sort of like how Nemesis Enforcer's name is actually Nemesis Enforcer. I liked the whole Adam DeCobray approach a whole bunch. It's similar to Freedlowe in that it's an alias to hide his real identity. I think if he were to get a name today, it should be some sort of tribute to Chris Latta. I'm working on a story about his early years and decided to roll with Lattimer as his last name.

I don't think Fred was his name or that his face was the basis for their look. The Fred series were not the only series of Siegie clones... there were others, including different races and women. I think the Fred series was named after, and based on, Fred Broca, as he was the first one of that particular series.

For 3.75 they made a lot of Joes where names and/or likenesses were used:
The Fridge Sgt Slaughter Roddy Piper Tunnel Rat (Larry Hama) Sneak Peak (Owen King) Scoop (NBC reporter Mike Leonard) Iron Bear (Derryl DePriest) Dragonsky (Brandon Jerwa) Dusty (Ron Rudat) Rampage (Walter McDaniel) Big Brawler (Brian Mulholland) It was common for likenesses to be used of employees, friends, and family as well by the sculptors, not all are documented. For 12 Inch they made a lot of real people: Audie Murphy Teddy Roosevelt Buzz Aldrin John Glenn John F. Kennedy Ulysses S. Grant Colin Powell Douglas MacArthur Buffalo Soldier John R. Fox Roy Benavidez George Washington Mitchell Paige Jimmy Doolittle Dwight Eisenhower Francis S. Currey George Patton Robert Crippen Bob Hope Ted Williams Charlie Bury |

In the new sculpt era Barrel-Roll was based on Dwight Stall (now more famous for Marvel Legends).
I believe Sure-Fire was based on a RL name or likeness as well. |
