The DIC cartoon ran for three years, from 1989-1991.
In 1989, Scoop was the most prominent Joe by screen time with 1235 seconds. Scoops pants? Yellow. In 1990, Capt. Grid-Iron was the second most prominent Joe by screen time with 1904 seconds, narrowly losing out to Pathfinder who had 2100 seconds (Grid-Iron bested him on word count, though - those football puns put him over the edge). Grid-Iron's pants? Yellow. In 1991, Grunt was the fourth most prominent Joe by screen time with 1000 seconds, falling behind only perennial heavyweights Hawk, Flint, and Duke, with Hawk topping out at 1509 seconds. Grunt's pants? That's right, they were yellow. In all three years of the DIC run, a major (if not THE major) character wore yellow pants. What is the meaning of this? Did someone at Hasbro have an incentive to sell yellow pants to children? Did YOU have yellow pants at this time? I must know. I'll add another wrinkle to this: if you look at the most prominent Joes from DIC Season 2, Hawk and Duke are based on their '92 figures and Flint is based on the '91 Eco Warriors sub-team figure, which leaves Grunt as the most prominent Joe from the standard 1991 line
So that means in the DIC run, the most prominent Joe from the '89-91 standard lines (I'm calling Grid-Iron tied with Pathfinder in '90) is the yellow-panted one! |

I will say that seems like it's got to be more than coincidence. Maybe the head guy at DIC that was in charge of the show was a big fan of yellow and picked out those Joes? Hahaha

DIC was notorious for penny pinching and doing everything as cheaply as possible. They usually used whatever supplies were left from a previous show combined with robbing from the budget of an upcoming show to make their current show.
With the way Dic was run I would not be surprised if they had a ton of yellow ink pens left over from Alf's yellow shirt, from the Alf cartoon, and told the writers to use more of the yellow colored characters so they could use up the yellow ink pens before they dried out. lol |
