so, i was thinking yesterday as i drove from Spokane to Seattle about how throughout the history of Joe their were a lot of "replacements" i.e., Roadblock replaced Rock n' Roll, Bazooka replaced Zap, etc... then i got to thinking, as crappy as a lot of the latter year ARAH figs were, there were still some Gems (like Repeater and Hit & Run) ~ this got me thinking if i could put together a team of later-era ARAH joes that were "replacements" for the O-13... Also trying to choose ones that are "quality" like, sure Capt. Grid Iron seemed like a cool character going off his filecard, but he's absolutely ridiculous looking (imho) so he doesn't make the greatest Hawk analog... Basically, i was looking for figures that looked like they would "fit in" with the 82-86 "glory years" of ARAH
Original 13 = Specialty / Specialty = Replacement Breaker = Communications / was there another com-guy after Dial Tone? the only one i can find is Dee-Jay, and he's horrible Flash = Laser Rifle Trooper / who else fits besides 91 Sci-Fi? Grunt = Infantry Trooper / Light Infantryman = Hit & Run Rock N Roll = Machine Gunner / Steadi-Cam Machine Gunner = Repeater Scarlett = Counter Intelligence / Ninja Intelligence = Jinx Short-Fuze = Mortar Soldier / Mortar Man = Downtown (kinda torn on who's a better 'fit' between Downtown, who's a bit garish and Hardball, who i definitely like more, but is less of a direct analog) Snake Eyes = Commando / who else fits besides 89 Snake Eyes? Stalker = Ranger / Long Range Recon Patrol = Recoil (He's one of my favorite late guys with Repeater and Hit & Run) Zap = Bazooka Soldier / Anti-armor Specialist = Salvo Clutch = VAMP Driver / Desert Fox Driver = Skidmark (his costume is a little flashy with the red but the basic design is solid.) Grand Slam = Laser Artillery Soldier / Thunderclap Driver/Artillary = Long Range (he's a little too sci-fi for what i was going for, any other suggestions?) Hawk = Commander / Strategic Commander = Col. Courage Steeler = Armor/Tank Driver / General Commander = Major Storm (check his filecard, he's a great fit and a cool design ~ i'd actually never seen him before today) anywho, thoughts and suggestions for the open slots? I really couldn't find anyone who made sense to replace Snake-Eyes... Doing this has made me want some figs of a lot of these later guys who didn't suck ~ their are some surprisingly solid designs from later on that i'd really like to see 25th-style updates too (although a lot less Cobras)

Well, there was Colonel Courage (1993) and General Flagg (1992). Either character seems like a latter-day analogue for Hawk (although I'd probably go with Colonel Courage, as he's the same rank as Hawk was when he was originally put in command of the Joe team).
Snake-Eyes, despite being ubiquitous almost to the point of annoyance, has no latter-day ARAH analogue, in my mind. Oh, they tried with Kamakura in the Valor vs. Venom line, but he just came off as the "Bucky" to Snake-Eyes' "Captain America" (or the "Robin" to Snake-Eyes' "Batman" if you're a DC guy)... in that part of the character's appeal is in the promise of him eventually replacing his mentor, but nobody really seriously considers the notion of him doing so (and when he does, you know that he'll always be considered a shadow of the original). |

Downtown I may suggest Recoil for Breaker as he was a Radio operator as well. I guess Snake Eyes can only replace himself otherwise I would say Shockwave. Not quite the same but similar. Stalker can be replaced by Muskrat who is also a Ranger. What I use to do was break down each year as their own unit. so for instance 88 had 15 new characters. 89 is 14 guys but 4 are Rock'n'roll; Stalker; snake-eyes, and Deep-Six. But if you include Tiger Force or Night-Force you get more like 20 guys. Still each year usually gets an officer to be in charge. Other times I would group certain years together. like 82, 83, and 84. then 85, 86, and 87. after that they started putting out close to 30 figures a year. |

thanks, ZD, Col. Courage is great ~ his name's a bit cheesy but he looks extremely of an era with the early figs!!! have you seen a 25th custom of him? he looks like he'd be really easy to do since his base is pretty much Duke, and a clutch or breaker head...

Now that Zulu mentioned it, I took the SRO Duke which is like the same colors and then tried my best to paint him African-American. I little glossy but it's him.

I'd say you give yourself a bit of freedom if you dont't stick to their precise specialties.
'89 Storm Shadow could fill Snake Eye's role, although he may look silly trying. I definitely had Shockwave fill Snake Eye's commando role when my old Snake's were broken and gone. I think you have some cool picks. I stopped collecting after '89, when it's generally accepted the was bright and goofy, but looking at my guide, I'm surprised at how relatively realistic and earth toned the 90-91 single Joes are. |

yeah, i was too.
Storm Shadow kind of works, but i was looking for "new" characters were possible, and there's a real lack of the 'Commando' type that i could find after 88 ~ i think Beachhead works, but he was a little early of a character for this excercise...

According to the comics, Grunt was replaced by Ripcord and Scarlet was replaced by Lady Jaye (the line said by Lady Jaye to Scarlet could be interpreted as replacements for the whole squad, but it was Grunt and Scarlet that were present when they came to the PIT).
