Greenshirts: Catch-all term for the Joes' support personnel and base security.
Steel Brigade: Reverse-engineered from captured Cobra Battle Android Troopers, the Steel Brigade is a unit of experimental robot soldiers created to assist the Joes in heavy battle conditions. Hawk was reluctant to use them at first, but later decided that any bullet they took was one the Joes didn't have to. By the 21st century, the Steel Brigade troopers began to more closely resemble humans, utilizing synthetic skin. Cobra Troopers/Vipers: The backbone of the Cobra forces, the Cobra Troopers were originally Red Shadows troopers who joined Cobra following the fall of the Red Shadows in 1975. In 1986, as most of the former Red Shadows troopers were replaced by new recruits, the Cobra Troopers were renamed Vipers and given new uniforms and more sophisticated equipment. |

I don't use any of them. They sit in boxes, storage crates or bags.

I don't really use Greenshirts or Steel Brigade. I like the way many of the above posters use them. I just prefer my Joes to be named.
For Cobras: Blueshirts - Cobra Infantry Troopers - Cobra ranks equivalent to E-1 through E-4, basic infantry. If the infantry show promise, they can become Viper pilots or Eels (and Eels can advance to Snow Serpent), or else transfer to the elite Crimson Guard. If they get in trouble, they are sent to become Desert Scorpions. Cobra Officers - Equivalent to O-1 through O-4. If the basic Officers show mechanical promise, they can become Stinger Drivers, who can eventually earn the rank of O-5 and become HISS Drivers. Major Bludd, the most senior O-4 in Cobra, commands a company of about 250 Cobras. Due to Cobra Commander's paranoia about being usurped, no individual Cobra Officer commands more than a company (100-250 soldiers). The O-5 rank is reserved for the coveted HISS Driver position, but does not include an increased command size. Vipers - E-3 to E-4, about the same rank as the upper level infantry blueshirts, but with better battle gear. These are Infantry with promise. From here, they may learn a specialty to become one of the many -Vipers, such as Tele-Vipers, Air Vipers, Strato-Vipers, Techno-Vipers, etc. As punishment, they may be demoted to Toxo-Vipers. Crimson Guards provide three main functions - 1. Personal guards for Cobra Commander, Tomax & Xamot (Extensive Enterprises), Dr. Mindbender, and other senior high-level Cobras. 2. They can alternatively be sent deep-cover into civilian society to cause problems in various regions. 3. Elite Shock Troops, in their Immortal gear, Crimson Alley Vipers, Crimson BATS, etc. Last edited by Bryon; 01-17-2024 at 01:09 AM.. |

Greenshirts - US Military support for GI Joe.
The Steel Corps - They are a separate team that handle the situations that are below GI Joe and help clean up after Joe is done. Part of INTERPOL Vipers - They're just another uniform for cobra blue shirts Crimson Army Builders - Vipers and BATs are the private military wing of Extensive Enterprises and whose services are routinely purchased by cartels and the mob. The Crimson Alley Vipers are part of my Cobra tank division.

Blue Shirts - The maintain the bases and overall security, low-level vehicle drivers (can wear various colors. grey for drivers/or naval etc )
Vipers- Tier 2 of security for bases and installations. low-level vehicle drivers Crimson Guards- exclusive security for various ranked officials in Cobra/ normally working in white-collar jobs. If you are better than average at killing, you can volunteer for the Viper Corps. The pro is that Vipers have better gear, the con is that you are even more likely to die. Vipers are Cobra's assault force - the tip of the spear. Remember the "shock troops" sent into space in the MASS Device mini-series? In my mind, those were proto-Vipers. CGs are Cobra Commander's elite personal troops. Tasks vary, but per their file card they are not wasted on the battle field. So they are like Star Trek red shirts? Love it!

I keep my green shirts to a minimum. Same with Steel Brigade. I don’t think there should be very many of them. Maybe more green shirts so they can fill the gas, take out the trash load the weapons, clean the toilets. Steel brigades should be low numbers on the battlefield. I’m my collection for example I have 6 ME 4” Steel Brigades to my 75 cobra blue shirts

Cobra Troopers - ex military infantry, gang members or part of local para military groups.
Cobra Vipers - ex Rangers, Special Forces, French Foreign Legion, Spetsnaz, PMC's or mercenaries. Crimson Guard - Perform deep cover in political arenas and Fortune 500 companies. Also provide security details for high level Cobra operatives. Green Shirts - Fobbits/base security. Steel Brigade - on loan to UN to train their forces and perform high risk missions.

Cobra Infantry/Blue Shirts - Entry Level Cobra enlisted personnel. Perform many support and "drudge" duties and can certainly be called upon to fight if necessary. After a year (maybe less if very talented) they can start down a specialization path (Bazooka Trooper, Machine Gunner, RTO, Diver, Driver, Arctic Trooper, etc...) that can then further lead to advancement into the more elite/specialized troop types.
Cobra Officers - Folks with specialized or notable experience and/or education can join Cobra at this level. These are the "middle managers" of Cobra and are often placed in command of cells of Blue-Shirts or even more specialized troops. This is the most cutthroat and difficult "level" of Cobra personnel as everyone jockeys for favor, fortune, and recognition and are encouraged to compete against their peers, even to a lethal degree (as long as you can pull it off without being obvious). The top percentile of Cobra Officers who manage to survive four years in the role get the opportunity to be promoted to the Crimson Guard. Those that would rather not lose their original identities or whom survive the four years but are not in the top percentile can either remain as Cobra Officers or transition to an officer within the specialist troops. Cobra Vipers - General Infantry Operations Specialists. Cobra's frontline combat troops. Former Blue Shirts that specialized as riflemen/troopers. Crimson Guard - The Crimson Guard has three "branches." The clandestine operations branch is led by the Crimson Twins and consists of the deep cover operatives as described in the OG filecards. They often have specialized technical expertise above and beyond their combat and espionage training and are highly educated. The second branch is Internal Security (led by the Baroness), where they act as "political officers" assigned to groups of other Cobra personnel to make sure they remain loyal to the cause and the Commander. The third and smallest branch is the Personal Security Detachment (Crimson Guard Immortals) who are Cobra Commander's bodyguards. Crimson Shadow Guard - This very small group are Cobra Commander's personal enforcers within Cobra. Each Crimson Shadow Guard is the individual that served as the template for a series of Clandestine Operations Crimson Guards. So basically "Fred I" would be a member of the Crimson Shadow Guard. They are fanatically loyal to the Commander and answer only to him, while also serving as his secret council of advisers. Each is a highly educated specialist with most holding high-level or high-prestige professional positions in the civilian world (CEOs, Specialist Doctors, High-Price Lawyers, etc...). Most of Cobra doesn't even know they exist, and even among the "High Command" only the Commander, Baroness, and Crimson Twins are fully aware of them (though Destro and Mindbender strongly suspect). They are effectively manipulators and assassins who deal with anyone Cobra Commander deems a threat to his leadership, whether by eliminating them or simply sabotaging their advancement. They also police the Internal Security branch of the Crimson Guard. They are the ones who watch the watchers, in other words. Green Shirts - Special Ops Support personnel specifically assigned to the Joe Team. Mostly in administrative, technical support, and security roles answering to the GI Joe Chief-of-Staff (Colonel Courage). They have to pass a specialized qualification course and intense security screening to work with the Joes. They are part of the "Steel Brigade" and make up the vast bulk of the Brigade. Their duties rarely take them outside of Joe Headquarters. Steel Brigade Troopers - Joes-in-waiting. There are only a limited number of billets for the "codenamed" Joes, but they still often need direct combat support for larger operations. That's where the Steel Brigade Troopers come in. They have passed two levels of qualification to attain trooper status and are largely made up of Special Operations and elite infantry personnel from the various branches of the military (and occasionally foreign militaries). They are a match for all but the most elite of Cobra troops. "Gold Helmets" are simply Steel Brigade Troopers of officer rank (With commensurate responsibility). When new billets open for "codenamed" Joes, they are drawn from the ranks of the Steel Corps in a highly competitive process. The "Troopers" are about a Battalion-sized chunk of the Steel Brigade. Greenshirts - Support, maintenance and cannon fodder.
The Steel Corps - Light air support. The Steel Corps fight Trubble Bubbles and C.L.A.W.S. and they provide support to Sky Hawk's Vipers - For right now in my JOEverse they're the equivalent to the Rangers. This may change. Crimson Army Builders - With the exception of the SieGies any Crimson army builders are Serpentor's personal troops and they're under his command. Naturally their the best troops in COBRA Command and getting this assignment is the highest of honors. Being that they're the COBRA emperor's personal troops higher ranking officers in COBRA regular forces don't issue orders to troops in the Crimson Brigade and officers don't ask for assistance from the Crimson Brigade unless the situation is dire. Asking for help from emperor's personal troops can result in the officer asking for to (at a minimum) losing rank and his command or at worst death. The Emperor feels as if his officers should have enough skill of tactics and strategy not to get themselves in that end up being f.u.b.a.r. Steel Corps - I'm not very keen on Steel Corps either, and as such I didn't get the figures. I would liken them to be an elevated Ranger type unit, and are still not part of GI JOE but . Vipers - these are shock troops with better training and gear than the standard infantryman. I want to note that for me function does not equate rank, so there can be a blueshirt infantryman that is of equal rank to a Viper. You can join the Vipers directly if you demonstrate higher physical aptitude and ruthlessness, otherwise you have to have been an infantryman/trooper for a year to apply. Crimson Guards - like canon and mostly everyone's head canon, these guys are elite so they are never in direct combat. For me they serve multiple functions as within the Crimson Guard corps, there is an internal division (used in the general definition) and an external one. The internal division is like a quasi MVD/internal police/investigations type entity, rooting out spies or defectors or rumblings of disloyalty to Cobra. The internal side also covers personal security for Cobra Commander and other high profile Cobra elites or outside entities allied with Cobra (kind of like our Secret Service). Although each CG receives combat training, they are few in number so the Crimson Vipers act more as their muscle for when they need to grab the Mercer types before they or any intel can get out. Serving as a Crimson Viper is the easiest path to becoming a CG, but the former isn't easy. The external division is very similar to official canon, in that they are essentially spies within governments and corporations around the world. That being said, the "copy" program was short lived and done in my head canon. They aren't just Fred XYZs but are Freds, Steves, Abbeys, Chun Wens, Mahmouds, Mohammeds, Carls, Olivers, Svens, Elizabeths, and Mumbutus. As such, discovering a CG is a huge win for GI JOE, CIA, FBI, MI6, FSB, etc. CGs and CVs are under a separate rank/pay scale than all other troops with enlisted/officer equivalents. The Baroness is the head of intelligence and is a primary leader of the CG along with Tomax and Xamot. Regardless of which side they are under, CGs have to be educated or possess useful access, knowledge, or language ability to join. |
