So looking back on not just these layoffs, but the D&D debacle with them trying to force all-digital, the attempts at pushing people into MTG Arena, and the sub-licensing of a lot of their lines, I think we are seeing Hasbro's attempt at trying to move into being a holding company for IP.
I know a few of their lines are doing great like Classified, but how much longer can that keep the business afloat? If anything, the rapid fire of Classified releases could be them trying to use up excess factory capacity they are beholden to in contracts until those contracts expire. Their Disney products have been losing them money year after year, especially after losing the Disney Princess rights to Mattel. I do not see this being renewed. A lot of their "classic" other properties have gone to Basic Fun. Transformers continue to peter out in demand after a short run if it's not G1. They could easily shift that entirely to Takara. I think the McFarlane deal is them testing the waters to see if they can shift any remaining Classified demand to McFarlane when their factory contracts run out. Disclaimer: I'm just drawing conclusions from what I see. I have no inside source, but I feel like the writing is on the wall and these are some very simple leaps of logic to make.

I don't think they'll get out of the toy business entirely. They're definitely trying to minimize the damage by spreading out the risk.
As part of their licensing agreements, surely they get access to the production and sales numbers of their subleased IP. It's kind of free market research, yes?

G.I. Joe's future is most likely going to be placed in the hands of licensors. If so, at least it would be in the hands of folks that are passionate about the brand.

I think their exit will be slow and plodding, but keeping a braintrust on hand just to create a popular baby toy here or there really doesn't fit with their goals. Their footprint will continue to shrink over the next 10 years. The one baffling piece here was laying off Michael Kelly 2 days ago, who was head of global publishing, and the GI Joe creative lead. This can only mean bad things for the future of GI Joe. Monopoly Go is already popular on mobile. They can sublicense physical Monopoly to another company that makes games. If anything, this is good for us as collectors of vintage stuff, but it also means that the future of all these brands are almost non-existant.

The toy business as we’ve known it is coming to an end. Board games are obsolete and are simply relics of habit and familiarity but will be a category that is gone as a mass opportunity in the next 20 years. Hyper articulated action figures, as well, will be a niche, collector product as well and not a driver for a toy company trying to sell a lot of product.
The only meaningful toy opportunities will be baby and adolescent toys that are cheap, disposable and lack articulation. That leaves Hasbro likely to license out their IP’s to specialized companies who can sell more expensive toys at smaller volumes, while Hasbro contracts their own operations to actual kids toys. |

Same why they are doing. Classified, why sell 3.99 4 inch when they can sell 25$ 6 inch. |

That was my opinion of IDW. They wanted legacy titles like G.I. Joe but didn't know what to do with it once they had it. Hasbro of today seems much like that, too. I don't think Lenny & Co. reflect Hasbro or it's board. The Classified team are having fun, making money, and Lenny and the designers seem to genuinely like/love/respect the legacy.
