So I have my display for the Joes and Cobras on all the Modern Era/25th/30th/etc.
Sections for 'big names/main characters,' support/infantry, urban, desert, wilderness, sea, arctic and air for both sides, plus space for 'other parties' (Iron Grenadiers, KAOS, Serpentor and Cobra-La and the Coil, Dreadnoks, Blue Ninjas, Red Ninjas, Night Creepers, and zombies). All good, right? But now I am considering the Trouble Bubble. Where do I put my two for my display? Infantry, along with the Vipers, the Troopers, the BATs and all the small divisions (Night Vipers, Night Stalkers, etc) and HISS tanks? Or over in the air division, with the Rattler and FANG and Air Troopers with their jet packs. And even then, what Cobra troop flies them? .... and is it the same for the CLAW gliders? Silly question, I know, but curious what people think! Are Flight Pods air, or infantry? |

They could be used by both!

I think it's a fun question! I do think they belong more with the infantry than not. To me, they are a "make do" scouting and hit and run asset. They clearly don't have the same punch as the F.A.N.G. and I'd argue they don't have the range either, but they do probably have a small maneuverability advantage. So yeah, I'd say they belong more so with ground troops. I think it's kind of idiot proof with a lot of sensors and automation to keep it level with the ground, so I don't really see the need for a dedicated pilot type of trooper, probably just a blueshirt or Viper with a couple weeks extra training. I think the fact that we so often see ground troops flying it and that no iteration of G.I.Joe has ever bothered to come up with a unique pilot for them (compared to the effort that goes into that for the F.A.N.G.) also supports the argument. When they do appear with say, cobra helicarriers or the mothership or whatever, they strike me as being more like close security than going out doing long distance attacks.

For what it is worth, I would also class air troopers with jet packs under infantry. No jet pack will be keeping up with a Rattler or shooting down a Conquest. They are more like shock troops or quick battlefield air support

I'd say they are either a vehicle that can be found in all the sections of Cobra to some degree, that almost any trooper can learn to pilot, or ultimately more infantry, IMO if only because they would be more useful there than in any real support role for larger/faster aircraft.
I do like the idea of Tele-Vipers often manning them...so that they get better reception at altitide and can serve as a mobile relay for tight beam communications systems. Been considering treating the masked Tele-Viper as dedicated Trouble Bubble pilots. Last edited by Jmacq1; 12-13-2023 at 08:07 PM.. |

Finally I have a use for Gung Ho Dress Blues! He's there to stop non-Navy from going on boats.

I'd say that Flight Pods are like scooters for Cobra. Anyone can figure them out quickly enough to operate them. Claws are more for Officers/Mercenaries, or any snipers or pilots. If we get a Classified one I hope it comes with a Strato Viper. But I'm happy with my Mark2Design one.

The Cobra Flight Pod is not part of the Cobra Air Force because of the role it is used for.
It is an attack aircraft used primarily for close air support of the Cobra Infantry. Similarly, the US Army (rather than the US Air Force) operates the AH-64 Apache attack helicopter for close air support of their own infantry. Of course, the Trubble Bubble is also used for aerial minelaying and as an armed aerial scout.
