ISTR my grand plan for my collection was to get a pair of Heli-Vipers and use one for my FANG and one for my Trouble Bubble and that they'd be in the air branch along with the Rattler. IIRC, on the other hand, my fan-fic usually has FANGs and Trouble Bubbles flown by Vipers or blue shirts since it's based on the ARAH comics. so... do what ya like, I guess.

I have to concur with consensus, it is ground equipment like a back pack drone used in the USMC. Predators and Reapers are flown by dedicated drone pilots, but Pvt Snuffy carries the short range scout drone in a backpack and uses it to provide intel for his unit.
Sort of reminds me of parachute infantry. In the US, they were always part of the Army, but in Nazi Germany, they were the Luftwaffe/air equivalent of Marines. |

To be honest with you I forget about the CLAW pretty often haha. I've always had this perception that they are more of a specialty equipment if only because the FANG and Flight Pod have a bigger foot print in my memory from media depictions and re-releases. I think Glider is the key word though, I imagine anyone using a CLAW in combat ultimately expects to spend some time fighting on foot once they've reached their destination. I guess it's more like an equivalent to the JUMP in me, but I guess since I don't have one I'm biased to exclude it. I'll have to give it more thought!

So I have my display for the Joes and Cobras on all the Modern Era/25th/30th/etc.
Sections for 'big names/main characters,' support/infantry, urban, desert, wilderness, sea, arctic and air for both sides, plus space for 'other parties' (Iron Grenadiers, KAOS, Serpentor and Cobra-La and the Coil, Dreadnoks, Blue Ninjas, Red Ninjas, Night Creepers, and zombies). All good, right? But now I am considering the Trouble Bubble. Where do I put my two for my display? Infantry, along with the Vipers, the Troopers, the BATs and all the small divisions (Night Vipers, Night Stalkers, etc) and HISS tanks? Or over in the air division, with the Rattler and FANG and Air Troopers with their jet packs. And even then, what Cobra troop flies them? .... and is it the same for the CLAW gliders? Silly question, I know, but curious what people think! Are Flight Pods air, or infantry? Now, what about the CLAW???

The Flight Pod was cool and seemed somewhat practical for recon and light infantry support, if it was quiet enough, even though the groin is very dangerously exposed to ground small-arms fire.
But I never liked the CLAW, so I usually forget about it. I guess because I bought it as a kid and it just fell apart. But seriously, look at this thing. Can you imagine landing this on a paved runway? OMG. |

Agree with the consensus, definitely not part of the air branch but versatile and ubiquitous enough to not be relegated to just one part of Cobra's forces.
Like someone else mentioned, any troop can pilot them in there is a need with a few weeks extra training. It makes more sense they are used for low altitude close air support, area denial with the mine laying, escape if flying from an overrun position, maybe supply drops, maybe some kind of troop insertion scenarios. In my head canon they cannot fly that high, fast, and aren't super maneuverable. They certainly cannot shoot down a Skystriker or any fighter aircraft despite having kill stickers on the toy (unless they were grounded). Interesting fact about our own Air Force, it wasn't until after WWII that the branch was known as the US Air Force. It was the US Army Air Corps so it wouldn't be out of the question that an aircraft belonged to their army. I mean anything could go since they are a paramilitary. The CLAW is a tough one. For me it also a part of JOE toydom I seldom think about. I remember a scene from the cartoon where someone landed it by essentially "standing upright". |

I imagine that the takeoff and landing procedures are done in the way Larry Hama depicted it being used by Storm Shadow in the early Marvel comics. As a light flying wing, it could be considered the Cobra equivalent of the G.I. Joe JUMP (Jet Mobile Propulsion Unit) jet pack, until Cobra eventually stole the JUMP plans and created their own. French pilot Vincent Reffet had become famously skilled at demonstrating these exact procedures whenever using the Jetman Dubai version of the C.L.A.W., but three years ago lost his life during a training mishap. At the two-minute mark in this video, he demonstrates how smoothly a landing can be performed if a Cobra C.L.A.W. was a real vehicle. A manned high-speed landing would require a parachute and should never be attempted on a runway. The 1984 Cobra C.L.A.W. could also be used as a remote-controlled drone to drop a DES/28-B 750-LB Flashfire Bomb, and then could return using a runway landing, so that it could be re-armed again by a ground crew.
